Intro….(still needs a better title)

Hello and good afternoon to the first first team competitive “proper” home game of the season at a new look Inkersall Road… at the risk of repeating myself its been a long time since we've been here and as you’ll have already seen a lot has happened since the 3rd of March when our last game was played….

Quick quiz ;): who were the opponents? What was the score? Who scored? And there- fore who was the last player to score on Inkersall Road grass ? (answers later)

I wont bang on about the intricacies of the work that’s been done here over the last few months (there's a time lapse video which you may have seen and its been exten- sively covered on our twitter page) but you can see the finished product and hopefully you’ll agree with us that its absolutely fantastic and once we get rid of this Covid-19 malarkey will become a facility the whole community can be proud of… if you see Terry knocking about don’t forget to thank him for all he’s done and is continuing to do for us.

On the playing front this season we've not actually payed that many games yet but all of them have been away from home which means we’ve got quite a few home games to come and a few of them are “on the bounce” so that means theres programme after

www.staveleymwfc.co.uk follow @staveleymwfc 2 programme after programme to do in quick succession so I’m keeping the powder dry a bit in terms of match reporting / updating you on what has happened in the games you’ve missed so far so that there's actually something to put into those future editions, so in this one were going all the way back to the Fa Vase game v AFC Darwen in September!

Squad wise ….Joining us (at the start of the season )are Corbin Shires a defender who aged 16 made a football league appearance for Mansfield Town before injuries curtailed his career in the professional game.

Myron Gibbons – a young lightening quick centre forward who joins us following release from Doncaster Rovers Academy.

Brandon Webster – Young Left sided player who returns to the club following a season away at AFC Mansfield.

Cameron Hough— A defender who also joins us from AFC Mansfiield

Will Eades—signed rom Maltby Main, has ben in and around the locl football scene for a number of years now having played for Handsworths under 21s before pro- gressing to first team senior football with the Ambers .

Also joining the first team setup for this campaign are defender Brad Hextall and striker Reece Clegg who impressed enough for our Reserve side last season to make the step up.

And we've recently added Rieves Boocock another off the Donaster Rovers pro- duction line who in two starts has scored two goals and Cameron Foulkes who has could be in line for his debut today joins us from Bottesford Town.

You’ll no doubt get to know the new lads very shortly and much better than reading this little bit of blurb...so for now sit / stand back, (two metres apart) and enjoy the game.

Merry Christmas

Quik Quiz Answers:, Garforth Town, 3-0 to us, Jon Froggatt, Rob Worrall and Matty Parkin who was the last player to sore on our grass pitch!

In opposition…Albion Sports

Our opponents today were formed as a Amateur Sunday League club in 1974 and won the first of six titles in 1995/1996 adding a host of local cups along the way and also played in the final of the National F.A Umbro Sunday Cup on two occasions unfortunately losing both to Prestige Brighams of Hull at Nottingham Forests City Ground and the second at to Gossoms End of London.

In 2007 they left Sunday football to try their luck on the Saturday Pyramid and following more success they joined the Northern Counties East League: Division one in 2011/12 and they arrive here today in this Premier League fixture following promotion in 2012/2013

Season so far…

The Lions have played seven league games so far winning three drawing one and therefore losing the other three and sit eleventh in the Premier League table and “interestingly” they have sored as many goals as they have conceded –eleven and consequently they have a goal difference of 0!

Last time out was so long ago its almost irrelevant (28/10/20) but they ran out 2-1 winners at home to Silsden with Finn Donovan and Daniel Facey on the scoresheet..

Head to Head…

Our record at home to Albion Sports is pretty good of the seven games we’ve played here we’ve won five drawn one and lost one.

None of those seven games have ended in a 0-0 draw and with 32 goals flying in they’ve all been entertaining two in particular spring to mind, the first is the only draw from 17/18 Josh Barker and Tyla Bell sored the goals that put us in a com- manding position after 64 minutes before Omar Habeeb made a game of it by pull- ing one back for the visitors after 70. Kurtis Morley restored our 2 goal advantage

www.staveleymwfc.co.uk follow @staveleymwfc 4 four minutes later and it looked like wed be keeping the points one again as it re- mained 3-1 to us as the clok tiked over to 90 however a Daniel Facey “consolation” made it 3-2 and a Tom Ellis own goal unbelievably saw us snatch a draw from the jaws of Victory!

The other one is from 16/17 and its mention has become somewhat of an annual tra- dition and will be up there in our record victory tables… it was one of those nights where everything we hit went in as we ran out resounding 8-0 winners but how it wasn't 4-4 at half time god only knows! If you're looking at the online version of this programme then click HERE for the goals.

Strange but True…

Something else that will be long remembered by those of us that were here is a January 2014 encounter played in torrential rain… not quite sure of the exact score at the time but we were losing and unlikely to get back into it with just ten minutes remaining Michael Trench went forward, one of the rare occasions we had actually made it into the oppositions penalty area and challenged for the ball with the Albion Keeper whose name escapes me at the moment.

The keeper won the ball fair and square no foul or anything but the action just hap- pened to occur in the only puddle on the pitch, which had been there since minute one on a surface which held up surprisingly well, even the fabled “naughty corner” wasn't causing a problem… however the referee stopped the game with just nine minutes left to play and made us try and get rid of it, we including your chairman Terry Damms spent eleven minutes clearing it only for the referee to abandon the game...result doesn't stand at that point and the game had to be replayed.. Which.. we lost.

“DON'T GIVE UP" - STOKE GABRIEL FOOTBALL CLUB, ENGLAND'S WORST TEAM

Lewes's first five games of this season saw us lose them all and hitting the bottom of the league. That certainly wasn't in the plan nor did our performances in some of those games warrant zero return. Results since have certainly been better although we are under no illusion this will be a tough season in a very competitive league. However, spare a thought for the fans of Stoke Gabriel Football Club who ply their trade in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division East, step 6 of the English National League structure. The club hail from the beautiful village of the same name in Devon on the banks of the River Dart, playing their home games at the modest Speedwell KIA Stadium. The club have played ten games as of the 19th October and lost the lot. I am sure there are other clubs that have yet to get a point (Ossett United in the North West for instance or Mangotsfield United in the Southern League, South Division) but it is the nature of the defeats that have see them hit the headlines for the wrong reasons. Having been in 16th place when the 2019-20 season was curtailed by COVID- 19, the club has seen personnel changes during the summer with players, coaches and committee members moving on, meaning that the squad is built around the club's Under18s side. "You can't win anything with kids" - the famous line uttered by Alan Hansen on the opening day of the 1995/96 season after Manchester United's Class of 92 had been beaten by Aston Villa. Never has such a true sentence been uttered in the case of Stoke Gabriel. They kicked off the season with an away game at Torridgeside. They lost 14-0. In their first home game of the season against Crediton United they did better,

www.staveleymwfc.co.uk follow @staveleymwfc 10

keeping the score down to 13-0. Since then they have lost all eight games. There was a glimmer of hope last week that new signings would have a positive impact as they restricted Ivybridge Town to just three second half goals but on Saturday they finished with ten men due to injuries against Plymouth Marjon who scored ten unanswered second half goals to make the final score 14-0. Whilst they recorded their biggest defeat of the season so far against third from bottom Bovey Tracey, they did get off the mark themselves in the 18-1 defeat and followed it up with another goal in the 9-1 defeat at Elburton Villa. Their star players so far? Seventeen year old goalkeeper Josh Organ, naturally. Whilst the young squad is finding life at the senior level tough, they are more than good enough playing at their own age level, winning three of their four league games so far. The village has an approximately 1,000- year-old yew tree in the churchyard of The Church of St Mary and St Gabriel, a church which has stood since Norman times. Legend has it that if you walk backwards seven times round the yew's main stem you will be granted a wish - I think now may be the time for the fans to start walking around that tree!

Stop press....on Saturday they scored another goal! Unfortunately, opponents Ilfracombe Town scored 17 (seventeen). Match of the match was that teenage keeper Josh Organ again. Written by @theballisround

In the Wings...

Our Reserves kicked off their Central Midlands league campaign on September the 9th and came away from Crowle Sports with all three points courtesy of a 3-1 win with our goals coming from Ben Mosley who got our equaliser after we fell behind to a Callum Stockton opener, Alex Sanderson (who has since joined Clay Cross Town) put us ahead and Oliver Papworth made sure of the points with the third.

The week after (26th September) our young Trojans earned a very respectable point against 17/18 Champions Harworth Colliery who once again find themselves in the CMFL after suffering Relegation from the NCEL Division one in 18/19 (the last proper season we had!)

Unfortunately things haven't gone aswell since then a 3-2 reverse v Retford United in the next game was followed by a 5-0 defeat to local neighbours and league leaders Clay Cross Town and a 3- 0 defeat v Long Eaton community saw them exit the Floodlit Cup at the first time of asking.

Their last game was technically the first game involving a Staveley MWFC side toplay on the new pitch last Friday night were a much improved performance saw them push Clay Cross Town all the way to the end in a narrow 2-1 defeat. With Mitchell Clogg soring ours from the penalty spot.
