Edward K. Tryon, IV [email protected] What experiences and/or events have shaped your life? Never say playing with trains as a child is wasted time! My familiarity with railroads only involved picking up my dad at the Haverford or Wynnewood train stations. But as a transportation consultant in my 20’s, I was involved in rail planning, repurposing and assessing the value of old railroad lines – and that enabled me to find a position at Penn Central Real Estate which included making parcel definitions and walking the tracks to the mushroom factories in Chester county. But in 1976 I transitioned to a Capital Programs job at Conrail as a research Diane at PA Farm Show analyst and estimator. I finally moved with our department staff to Amtrak in operations planning using computer simulations (with punch cards!). After doing all that, I can relax and enjoy the evening! What are your favorite Haverford memories? I recall trying to get from Latin class on the upper floor down to the Biology class without crashing into fellow students! Physics labs were most interesting and I brought in my bass guitar in to test the waveforms seen on the electronics. Watching Dana Slaymaker feed his python a mouse made biology class REAL (so did the dissection of the frog). I always enjoyed Shop class where I constructed many an unusual project besides tables and lamps - a guillotine, crossbow, harpoon and other items suitable for the “Adams Family” show. I spent many moments in classes preparing for our Band’s next songs and shows and listening to the new rock songs on WIBG when riding to/from school. The Animals song “We got to get out of this place” was a favorite theme in 1966-67. I also enjoyed after-school sports in the tennis courts with Art Spellissy, the Tinaglia twins and our friends. I will always recall the day when Jay McCabe and I smashed a Wham-O Superball in the squash court while trying to avoid the rebounds. It never ends well!
