To: All Grand Councils, GG Officers, RDGGMs Greetings, It has now been one week since we lost our beloved General Grand Master George Sellars. Not unlike Hiram he laid down his working tools before the Tem- ple was complete. He did leave his drawings for us to complete our goals. MPGGM George was a dynamic individual who brought great pride and enthusi- asm through his vision and goals. Those who are following have much the same vision, and we will do our best to emulate his work. On Monday February 11th, RPC Sid Roberts and I made a trip to Canyonville, Or- egon, where MPC Dalvin Hollaway gave us the oath of office as required by our Constitution and Bylaw. As the two remaining Trustees of the General Grand Council, we met and selected MIC Ron Guthrie to fill the position of Principal Conductor of the Work for the remainder of this Triennium. MIC Ron Guthrie was informed of this selection on Tuesday, February 12th , and he accepted the appointment. On Saturday, February 16th, I spoke with MPC Hollaway and requested he fill out the vacant General Grand Council Trustee position. He agreed.

Here is the line up of General Grand Officers for the remainder of the 45th General Grand Council Triennium: MPGGM Lawrence Weaver RPDGGM Milton “Sid” Roberts RPGGPCW Ronald Guthrie RPGGT Charles Hollinger (no change) RPGGR David Grindle (no change) General Grand Trustees: MPGGM Lawrence Weaver RPDGGM Milton Sid Roberts MPPGGM Dalvin Hollaway

These are the required elevations and appointments according to our Constitution and By-laws.

Yours in faith and service.

Lawrence O. Weaver

Elected and Installed, Secretary General 2000-2004 – Sovereign College Most Illustrious Grand Master Grand Council of Michigan May 21, 1988 Regional Deputy General Grand Master East Central Region, 1996-1999 General Grand Master 2011-2013 Raleigh North Carolina Died February 10th, 2013

George has literally several hundred memberships in various Masonic Orders and degrees, and numerous Honorary memberships throughout this country as well and the entire globe, however these honors do not by any means define George Sellars. I first became friends with George when we were both Regional Deputies for General Grand Master Orville Wesseler. We traveled together quite often during those three years. Glenda and I went throughout the Midwest because that is originally my home. George and Brenda went throughout the Southeast because they both particularly liked it here and so we became good friends to my great pleasure and honor. George was difficult to deal with at times because of his always active and totally analytic mind. When he was my General Grand Conductor of the work, I would often ask George’s advice on some problem. Instead of getting a yes or no answer, I usually got six or eight pages of analysis where he had broken the situation down into its many parts, an analysis of what to do about each part and its effects on the rest of it and he overall effect of every alternative action. I have to say it was oftentimes frustrating when all I wanted was a simple yes or no, but also I have to admit that he was almost invariably right and there were several time I would have been wise to follow his advice. I will miss George, I talked to him at least once each week during the last part of his illness and I know that many times he was in great pain. He never mentioned it except to sometimes say he was having a bad day today and never complained once that I remember during his ordeal with one of the most painful cancers inflicted upon mankind. George presided by phone conference over the last Board of Directors meeting of the Cryptic Masons Medical Foundation. As the long day wore on, we could tell that he was tiring and in pain, but he conducted the meeting to its 2013 Proceedings of The Grand Council Royal and Select Masters of Alabama

end with fairness, competence, and correctness. His rulings and discussions were as good as we had all become accustomed to during the six years we served with him on the board and his contribution will be with us for a long time. The last several times I called their home, George had already slipped into a coma and I did my best to console Brenda, especially when the end was just a few hours away. Then I realized I was trying to give courage and strength to one of the most courageous and strongest women I have ever known. So we just talked about kids, grandchildren, weather and anything else that come to mind. I will regret to my dying day that because of the extreme weather in Alabama, the entire southeast, Michigan and New England that I was not able to attend his funeral. Regardless of that I did not need to see them bury the package George came in. To me he will always be my friend, I know his courage and clear mind and above all he was a gentleman.

Farewell friend, we’ll meet again, sooner than either of us would like. Illustrious Grand Master, I now beg of you a moment of silent prayer for this dear departed Companion and friend to .

Sincerely, Maurice C. “Bud” Himes Past Most Illustrious Grand Master and Past Most Puissant General Grand Master.

ADDRESS OF THE MOST ILLUSTRIOUS GRAND MASTER

Jimmy D. O’Dell 2012-2013

To the Officers, Past Most Illustrious Grand Masters, Companions, and Distinguished Guest of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Alabama:

It is my pleasure and distinct honor to extend to each of you a most hardy welcome. I hope you are looking forward to our Annual Assembly as much as I am. Companions, this is the time for us to assemble and be together. Look around this room and count the Brothers in this Assembly that you know. Without York Rite Masonry a lot of us might never have known one another. This is the day to enjoy those friendships and make new ones. The only thing missing in this place is an enemy, there are none here. To the General Grand Council Representatives, we thank you for taking the time to honor presence. We will do our best to make your visit enjoyable.

State of the Craft

I want to thank the officers and leaders of the councils around the state for their dedication and perseverance not only to their own councils, but to York Rite Masonry in general. Because you care, York Rite is still very much alive in Alabama. It is good to see younger Masons who are seeking more light coming to the York Rite. This is what makes bringing the Rough Ashlar to Perfection so enjoyable in the greatest fraternity of the world.

Necrology

Our Grand Line Officers has remained unbroken by deaths at the present, but several Royal and Select Masters have laid down their working tools this year. We offer our deepest sympathies to the families of our departed companions. Our Illustrious Grand Chaplain will have more details in his report.

Dispensations

Companions, I granted dispensation to Florence Council # 74 of Royal and Select Masters of Alabama to vote and conduct business out of turn in regards to take candidates to the Spring Festival in Birmingham to be held at the Birmingham Metro York Rite Temple 3430 Ratliff Road, Irondale, AL 35210 on May 19th, 2012.

ADDRESS OF THE MOST ILLUSTRIOUS GRAND MASTER

Jimmy D. O’Dell 2012-2013 (Continued)

Audit

I authorized the Grand Reorder to turn over all of the files and books to the Audit Review committee for their inspection and audit.

Visitations

I did not make any out-of-state visits this year due to my health problems. I attended the one day class in Birmingham, Huntsville, Gadsden, Piedmont, and Anniston. I also attended Jerusalem Tabernacle XXXII, Alabama Priory No. 31 KYCH., Alabama College of Rosicrucian, Mont Sano York Rite College, and Dinar Grotto.

Conclusions

Let me thank each one of you for allowing me to serve this Grand Council as Most Illustrious Grand Master for 2012-2013. I thank the Grand Officers, both elected and appointed. Your support has been deeply appreciated. To each Companion I asked to serve on the committees, thank you for your service and dedication. To our Grand Recorder Companion Hiram O. Williams and his wife, Cindy, I am thankful for what you do for the Grand York Rite and for your friendship all these years.

I am grateful to Dothan York Rite Bodies for taking time to commit to memory the Opening of the Grand Council this year. I am honored by this and I thank you very much for your dedication and commitment.

Finally, none of this would be possible without the love and support of my wife, Stephanie. This Grand York Rite has been a long time for me, going lots of places, meeting lots of people. Stephanie has been with me every step of the way. I love you and I thank God for bringing you into my life.

Respectively submitted,

To the Most Illustrious Grand Master, Grand Officers, and Companions of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Alabama:

We, your Finance Committee, submit the following report for your consideration. We have examined the Review of the Grand Council Balance Sheets as reported by the Audit Committee and find them in order and recommend your approval. We have reviewed the insurance and bonds on the Treasurer and Recorder and find them adequate in coverage.

As a result of declining membership and the concomitant decrease in revenue, we were obliged to make some necessary cuts in certain areas of the Budget for the year 2013-2014. Until we redouble our efforts to recruit and retain new Companions, this trend of decreasing funds will certainly continue.

The budget was prepared by this committee; we were assisted by the Grand Recorder and Grand Treasurer and by the consultation with the Finance Committee members of the Grand Chapter and Grand Commandery.

We move the Budget be accepted as printed.

Respectfully submitted,

George L. Marshall, Jr. PGHP, PGC, KYGCH, Chairman Arthur Lee Campbell, III, KYCH Ronald Thomas, KYCH

Grand Council Royal and Select Masters of Alabama Report of the Audit Committee

Hon. Jimmy D. O’Dell Most Illustrious Grand Master Grand Council Royal and Select Masters of Alabama

We your audit committee have reviewed the books and records of the Grand Council Royal and Select Masters of Alabama for the period 1 January 2012 through 31 December 2012. We found no discrepancies in the records we reviewed that would lead us to believe that a modification to the financial statements would be warranted. In our review we discovered some areas of the records of the Grand Council that need updating. We have made comments concerning these areas in the Notes to Financial Statements section of this report.

Grand Council Royal and Select Masters of Alabama Notes to Financial Statements For the period ended December 31, 2012

Note 1 – Summary of Significant Accounting Policies

A. Basis of Accounting

The Grand Council’s policy is to prepare its financial statements on the cash basis of accounting. Under this method certain revenue and the related assets are recognized when received rather that when earned and certain expenses are recognized when paid rather than when the obligation is incurred. Accordingly, the accompanying financial statements do not purport to present the current financial position.

B. Inventories

Inventories are carried at the lower of cost determined by the first-in, first-out method, of market.

C. Property and Equipment

Property and equipment are recorded at cost and were depreciated over the estimated useful lives of the related assets. Depreciation was computed on the straight-line method for financial reporting purposes.

Note 2 – Tax Status

The Grand Council is exempt from federal income tax under Internal Revenue Code Section 501©, and from state income tax under Alabama Code Section 40-18-32. An information return is filed each year on IRS form 990.

Note 3 – Restricted Assets

A Triennial Reserve account is established as a reserve to cover expenses for specific officers to attend the Triennial Meeting. During the year there was an increase in the balance of this reserve account to $ 1,350.00

REPORT ON NECROLOGY

To the Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Alabama:

While we stand in sadness that some of our beloved brethren are no longer among us in this phase of our live, we also stand joyfully in sure and certain faith in the resurrection to everlasting life through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our heavenly Father has seen fit to gather unto himself this year the soul of our Most Worshipful Grand Master Charles A. Booker. REPORT ON NECROLOGY (Continued)

In addition there have been taken from our midst thirty of our brethren, who have now entered the Celestial Lodge above where the Supreme Architect of the Universe presides. May they rejoice in the perfect light of which they have now become a part. We pray that they will grow from strength to strength in the life of perfect service in His heavenly kingdom.

We pray also that GOD in his loving compassion will comfort those who mourn their passing, reminding them that their loved ones are now in that better place where we will all eventually, by the mercy of GOD, be with them again.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT

To the Most Illustrious Grand Master and Companions of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Alabama.

It is the responsibility of this committee to report the status of the membership relative to the Grand Council of Alabama and the subordinate Councils. As the committee reports in prior years, our membership continues to decline

In all honesty, it appears that our society has regressed to the point that the character and quality of men that our fraternity has subsisted upon for several hundreds of years, has drastically decreased. The humane and gently men, that progressed our beloved Craft to such heights of rare air and which we now long to regain, have all but gone extinct. The degradation of our society has seen the self-centered “Me” generation successfully take over the exoteric world in general. If there is any doubt that world has lost its humanity and brotherly love, all one has to do is watch the local, national or world news reports.

As youths growing up in our respective localities, we can remember when any man was of any character or status was a member of our fraternity. Not that a man had to rich in a monetary manner, but richer in the human spirit of charity and love for his fellow man. If a worthy person needed a helping hand, there was always a Companion there to stretch out the hand of friendship and brotherly love.

It is the recommendation of this committee is that we ensure that we as Royal and Select Masters, look for the quality rather than the quantity of old. Since we live in a time when a man would rather watch television or surf the internet rather than interact with another human being, we need to continue to be the ever lit beacon that will shine for those few that do wish to join our fraternity and make a positive difference in the world. There are men out there that are looking for the society that we strive to rebuild and we need them to join with us in our mission.

Lastly, keep the faith for as the meek inherited the earth from the dinosaurs, so shall the children of GOD build our heaven on earth so all men can live as brothers under the fatherhood of GOD.

YOUTH COMMITTEE REPORT

To the Most Illustrious Grand Master and Companions of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Alabama

The Youth Committee compliments the Grand Council of Alabama for their monetary support. We are sure that the young men and ladies of the DeMolay and Rainbow Girls are using the funds in the most prudent and effective manner possible. Your Youth Committee begs that you do something different…put your time where you put your money. The youth of the World need our attention, mentorship and time more than they need our money. We need to actively engage our youth and support them in their development as human beings. Left to the ways of the World , they will become what the path of least resistance will award them. We need to challenge our youth to be the best and support them in their efforts to grow better as a person. Go to the meetings of the DeMolay and Rainbow Girls, if they are in your local area. If they are not in your local area, find a group of youths that you can pull away from the television, phone or computer and start a local DeMolay and Rainbow group. We are sure that our state adult leadership will to more than happy to assist you in the venture. We challenge you to support our youth with your time.

Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation Committee 24 February, 2013

To the Most Illustrious Grand Master, Grand Officers and Companion Members

The Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation Committee submits the following report of contributions from Cryptic Masons in Alabama for the period from February 2012 to January 2013:

Total contributions at the Grand Assembly of February 2012 (Including Memorials, Divine Service, and Crafts Room) $4,171.00 Average Contribution per Member = $2.38

Additional Contributions during this period $ 325.00 Total $4,496.00 Revised Average Contribution = $2.56

There were two private contributions from Alabama Cryptic Masons made during this period which were recognized with suitable honors and recognition, but unfortunately were not credited toward Alabama contributions, even though requested to be done so.

Alabama was ranked tenth in total contributions during this period, and would have ranked eighth if the private contributions had been credited as requested. The last time Alabama has been ranked tenth or better was in 1993 when we were ranked first.

The Executive Secretary of the Foundation, Companion Marion Crum resigned in December, and I am happy to report that his replacement, Companion and Most Illustrious Past Illustrious Grand Master Gary Wyne of Indiana has replaced him. He attended the annual Board of Directors meeting in January of this year, and from al indications and the most favorable impression he made at that meeting, he is going to do a fine job. The members of the board feel that the Executive Secretary’s position is in competent and efficient hands.

As both the Chairman of Cryptic Masons Medical Foundation in Alabama and as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, I wish to thank the Companions for their generous contributions.

I can assure you that your contributions are being used by the Center for Vascular Biology and Disease at Indiana University School of Medicine to good purpose. The long strides they have made in just a few years has now reached worldwide scope and influence, and they are now recognized by the Center for Disease Control as a defacto ‘clearing house’ and coordinating entity among other research centers doing similar research to help prevent duplication of effort.

Be assured that as a member of the Board of Directors, I do my best to stay current on the research being done and results of that research. It is far too extensive and wide ranging to include in this 2013 Proceedings of The Grand Council Royal and Select Masters of Alabama

report, but I am available to answer what questions I can and I am willing to attend any of your Assemblies or Table Councils to speak or make presentations as my schedule permits.

It has been my pleasure to serve this Illustrious Grand Council in this capacity, and respectfully request approval of this report.

Most Illustrious Grand Master George L. Marshall, Jr.

Letter to the Craft on the Death of Companion Jack A. Elliott

Dear Illustrious Companions:

This is a difficult letter for me to write but is one which I feel must be done in the best interests of Cryptic Masonry in Alabama.

We were all shocked and saddened by the sudden and unexpected death of Illustrious Companion Jack Elliott last week. He was our Grand Principal Conductor of the Work (PCW), having just been elected at the Annual Assembly in late February. We knew Jack as a true friend, Brother, Companion and Sir Knight and his presence among us will be greatly missed.

I have directed each constituent Council in Alabama to drape their charters in mourning for the month of March to express our sorrow and respect for Illustrious Companion Elliott.

I also requested the Jurisprudence Committee to render a ruling on my authority to move the elected Grand Council line officers below the Grand PCW up one slot, excepting the Treasurer and Recorder. I believe the Grand Council Constitution explicitly gives me this authority but I requested a ruling anyway. The ruling was that I did have this authority based on the latest set of Grand Council Constitution & By-Laws (adopted in 2009). Had this unfortunate and sad event of death in our line occurred within a month or so of our next Annual Assembly, I would likely not have taken such an action. I am also making this action effective as of 1 April 2013. I will also appoint a Grand Steward pro-tem.

Therefore, I am calling a meeting of the Grand Council officers to be held at Birmingham Metro Masonic Center immediately following the Knight Masons meeting this Saturday, March 9. Each elected line officer, except the Deputy Grand Master, Treasurer and Recorder, will kindly bring the following with him: Apron, Apron Case, Collar, Name tag, and lapel pin. I realize this is sudden but feel this would be the most opportune time to make exchanges prior to April 1.

Thank you for the service each of you are rendering to and the York Rite in Alabama.

Fraternally,

George L. Marshall, Jr., KYGCH(2), PGHP, PGC, KCT Most Illustrious Grand Master, 2013-2014

Minutes of the Special Called Grand Council Royal and Select Masters of Alabama Assembly

March 9, 2013 Minutes of Special Grand Council R&SM of Alabama Assembly The M.I. Grand Master Marshall called the Grand Council to order at 11:30 a.m. in special Assembly for the purpose of advancing elected officers (except the I.G.M., D.G.M., Treasurer & Recorder) up one position due to the untimely and unexpected death of Ill. Companion Jack Elliott, Grand Principal Conductor of the Work. The M.I.G.M. explained that he was not installing a new Grand Steward to avoid appearances of favoritism but would appoint a Grand Steward pro-tem and let the delegates to the 2014 Grand Assembly decide who to elect as Grand Conductor of the Council and Grand Steward. The M. I. G. M. then named Illustrious Companion Raymond C. Dunn of Huntsville as the Grand Steward pro-tem. The M. I. G. M. also announced that the advancement of the officers would be effective as of April 1, 2013, in deference to the memory of Ill. Companion Elliott. The following were then installed by M.I.G.M. Marshall with their term of office to start on April 1, 2013: Arthur Lee Campbell, III, as Grand Principal Conductor of the Work James C. McGee as Grand Captain of the Guard Thomas H.
