Received: 2010.02.03; Accepted: 2010.03.26; Published: 2010.03.29 Abstract The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of the fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) was determined. The genome is a circular molecule 15 481 bp long. It presents a typical gene organization and order for completely sequenced lepidopteran mitogenomes, but differs from the insect ancestral type for the placement of tRNAMet. The nucleotide composition of the genome is also highly A + T biased, accounting for 80.38%, with a slightly positive AT skewness (0.010), indicating the occurrence of more As than Ts, as found in the Noctuoidea species. All protein-coding genes (PCGs) are initiated by ATN codons, except for COI, which is tentatively designated by the CGA codon as observed in other le- pidopterans. -

In this natural reserve, butterflies are very common and they are an important insect group as flower visitors. The butterfly species in this guide were collected from six vegetation types distributed in this tropical coastal ecosystem. The aim of this guide is to provide knowledge about the diversity of butterflies to local people, for educational proposes and ecotourism. The images in this field guide include the dorsal and ventral position of each butterfly species with 1-cm scale. AN ANNOTATED CHECKLIST OF THE BUTTERFLIES (LEPIDOPTERA: RHOPALOCERA) OF BENTSEN-RIO GRANDE STATE VALLEY PARK AND VICINITY JUNE, 1974 Published by TEXAS PARKS & WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT BENTSEN-RIO GRANDE VALLEY STATE PARK P.O. 30X 988; MISSION, TEXAS 78572 INTRODUCTION The species listed here in are primarily a result of the collecting by the authors during the period 1972-1973. Certain important records of the previous several years are also included. Additionally, the checklist incorporates records of a number of other lepidopterists. The primary focus of the checklist, then, is upon recent collecting, rather than being an attempt to list all known records from the Mid-Valley area. All lepidopterists collecting in the park and vicinity are urged to send copies of their records to the authors and/or the park authorities. A number of species on the list have been taken in Hidalgo Co. but not yet within the actual confines of the park; the annotations will indicate which species these are. Some of these have been taken at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, approximately thirty miles down river, in habitats similar to those within the park. Others have been taken within several miles of the park, in nearby towns and along roadsides. These species can be reasonably expected to occur in the park, and their inclusion upon this list should alert the collector to their possible presence. The annotations have been kept necessarily brief. They are intended to aid the visiting lepidopterist in evaluating the significance of his catches. Local larval food plants are given where known. Much, however, is still to be learned regarding the life histories of even some of the commoner species. -

The sample was collected during the Characterization of wild Entomofauna of the Frio river basin jurisdiction of CDMB, in secondary forests in an altitudinal gradient from 1,000 to 2,911 masl. 79 specimens of the family Pieridae were collected, belonging to 13 genera of which Leptophobia had 5 species, and Catasticta and Eurema had 3 species each. We obtained 22 species distributed in six sampling locations, where the highest richness of species was in Diviso Experimental Center with 12 species and Esperanza Experimental Center with 10. The analysis of the inventory quality showed a potential richness of 32.81 species, a proportion of the observed species of 67.05% and a sampling effort of 76.41%. The comparison of inventories for each locality showed a certain similarity between La Nevera, La Mariana and La Judia, and fewer similarities with El Diviso. -

Introduction The genus Kricogonia Reakirt, 1863 belonging to the sub family Coliadinae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) is distributed from the southern United States to Venezuela, Cuba and the Antilles (Smith et al., 1994). According to Smith et al. (1994), two species are recognized from these areas: Kricogonia lyside (Godart, 1819), the type species of Kricogonia, and Kricogonia cabrerai Ramsden, 1920. Klots (1933) published an excellent generic revision of the family Pieridae in which he illustrated and described the male genitalia of K. lyside, but the relationship of Kricogonia to other pierid genera was not clearly shown. -

Checklists of the butterflies (Lepidoptera) collected in two rainforest study sites in the Tuxtlas Mts., Veracruz, Mexico are presented. A total of 182 species of butterflies were recorded at Laguna Encantada, near San Andres Tuxtla, and 212 species were recorded from the nearby Estacion de Biologia Tropical “Los Tuxtlas” (EBITROLOTU). We collected 33 species not included in G. Ross’ (1975–77) faunistic treatment of the region, 12 of which are new species records for the Tuxtlas. We present a list of the skipper butterflies (Hesperioidea) of the Tuxtlas, including a state record for the giant skipper, Agathymus rethon. At both study sites, we observed seasonal patterns in species abundance during periods of reduced precipitation. Our data indicate an apparent increase in butterfly species-richness in the Tuxtlas over the last 25 years. This increase reflects more efficient sampling due to advances in lepidopteran ecology and improved collecting methods, as well as the effects of habitat disturbance. A comparison between the butterfly faunas of the two rainforest sites revealed that a higher percentage of weedy, cosmopolitan species were present at Laguna Encantada, the smaller, more disturbed site. We anticipate further changes in butterfly species-richness and faunal composition as the mosaic of habitats in the Tuxtlas continue to be modified. -

Esta lista es el resultado de muestreos sistemáticos de estos taxones en un conjunto de localidades del estado (principalmente en las cercanías de León y la Ciudad de Guanajuato) durante 1998-2004, así como de especímenes depositados en la Colección Nacional de Insectos. Se registran 12 de Papilionidae y 27 especies de Pieridae, de las cuales 4 y 15 respectivamente son nuevos registros para el estado.
