FB.COM/JCSUATHLETICS 12 GOLDENBULLSPORTS.COM THE COMMEMORATIVE CLASSIC The 125-year-old historic rivalry began the authentic Black College Football Phenomenon. On December 27, 1892 Biddle Institute (Johnson C. Smith University) traveled to 's Old Delta Grove campus in Salisbury, North Carolina. Though there was snow on the ground and it was only two days after Christmas, the teams forged their way to a historic moment in sports while writers recorded the results. A writer in the 1930 yearbook of Livingstone College provided a glimpse of that December experience.

According to historian T. M. Martin, the men of Biddle spent two years studying the sport of football. In 1892, they challenged the men of Livingstone, whose team was formally organized in the fall of that year. It is doubtful that when Biddle University and Livingstone College teed it up on December 27, 1892, in what was described as little more than a cow pasture, either team had the slightest inkling of the legacy they were about to give birth. Games of monumental historical significance, coaches of legendary proportions and players of extraordinary brilliance ultimately emerged from what was to become known as Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The teams played two 45-minute halves on Livingstone's front lawn. W. J. Trent scored Livingstone's only touch- down on a fumble recovery. By then, snow covered the field's markings and Biddle argued that the fumble was recovered out of bounds. The official, who was Livingstone’s head coach, ruled in Biddle's favor, allowing them to keep the 5-0 lead that they established early on, giving JCSU the historic first victory! The rivalry continues...

Following a two-yard loss on a running play by Jachin Watkins (Charlotte, N.C.) and a pass completion to Demarcus Berry (Vanceboro, N.C.), two straight incompletions, the latter coming on fourth down, gave the ball to the Hawks with 1:54 left.

Chowan then iced the game after Offutt busted loose for a nine- yard rush, earning a first down. The Hawks then kneeled for two consecutive plays to seal the win.

Defensively, JCSU linebacker Marcel Toran (Washington, D.C.) had eight tackles, including two sacks on the afternoon while teammate Kahj Huitt (Smyrna, Ga.) had six stops with four be- ing solo, including one sack. All told, the JCSU defense held the high-powered Chowan offense to just 205 yards on the day.

The Golden Bulls offense struggled, managing just 100 yards on 65 plays. Ervin threw for a season-low 27 yards on a 4-of-16 outing, including one touchdown. Watkins led the JCSU rushing attack with 68 yards on 20 carries.

Yuille’s catch was caught on his back as both WSSU defenders were falling to the ground. Brandon Howard (Columbia, S.C.) knocked in the point after to pull to 20-16.

WSSU would then score on a two-yard plunge from quarterback Rod Tinsley to go up 27-16 with 8:45 to go. Prior to Tinsley’s score, JCSU was driving and had the ball at the WSSU 32, but the ball popped out of the JCSU running back’s hands and was returned 62 yards to the JCSU 2-yard line.

JCSU then mounted a comeback. After a Golden Bull punt, JCSU’s Deston Thornton (Kernersville, N.C.) was able to force Tinsley to fumble. Senior Carlo Thomas (East Orange, N.J.) pounced on the ball to give it back to JCSU at the WSSU 22-yard line. JCSU would not be able to capitalize, as they punted back to the Rams.

On the next Winston-Salem State possession, JCSU’s Jahvez Mitchell (Atlanta, Ga.) made a diving interception to give JCSU another opportunity in WSSU territory, this time at the WSSU 25. The Golden Bulls finally cashed in, going 25-yards in eight plays capped by a Braxton Gambrell (Seneca, S.C.) six-yard touchdown run, making it 27-22 with 3:19 to go.

JCSU was able to get one last chance at a game-winning drive, taking over at their own 16 after a WSSU punt.

After a first down completion toRod Carter (Miami, Fla.), JCSU lost six yards on a Ervin rush and then two incompletions, followed by a last second heave that resulted in a WSSU interception sealed the win for the Rams.

The Golden Bulls drop to 0-6 overall, 0-3 in CIAA play and 0-1 in Southern Division play while WSSU improves to 4-2, 2-1 CIAA, and 1-0.

Individually, JCSU’s Ervin finished with 58 yards on the ground while Jachin Watkins (Charlotte, N.C.) had 44. Ervin also finished with 181 yards passing and a touchdown on a 16-of-37 outing with two interceptions. The JCSU receiving corps got four receptions each from Yuille and Eugene Holmes (Columbia, S.C.) with Yuille going for 54 yards and score and Holmes going for 36 yards.
