ABSTRACT This research into methods of securing viable Christian mission in an inner-city area investigates a model emerging from praxis as a long-term Christian incomer to inner-south Manchester. ‘Mission-with’ is positioned alongside more direct paradigms, 'mission-to' and 'mission-for', not to replace, but complement, earning the right, especially in sensitive multi-cultural contexts. Two stages are examined through, respectively, auto-ethnographic reflection on my experience, and exploration of four case-studies (including ‘Carisma’, a major community response to gang violence). 1. Incarnational 'presence-among' in a particular context, and ensuing personal praxis with missional potential through ordinary daily life lived among and observed by other local residents. 2. ‘Project- praxis': activity and projects undertaken in equal partnership with other residents from shared concern to remedy local issues. The actions of all involved are seen as shalom-building and therefore missional. The basis is mission as missio Dei and an assumption that each Christian is called by God to service, defined by answering the question “where”. Neglect of this in discipleship has weakened Christian presence in the inner-city. Incarnation, following and ‘fascination’ are investigated as a response.     The Anglo Catholic Vision John Orens ANGLO-CATHOLICS ARE A PECULIAR LOT Not long ago, my wife and I were invited to a theological soiree: one of those events at which we Anglicans excel, the weighty questions of faith and morals being tempered by good food and fine wine. The setting could not have been better: the sheltered garden of a house in Georgetown. Our fellow guests were equally pleasant, but despite their conviviality we soon found ourselves embroiled in controversy. One of our dinner companions was a member of the vestry of a notoriously conservative Anglo-Catholic parish, and it took only a few minutes of conversation to set us arguing--decently and in good order, of course--about the ordination of women. Listening to our dispute with obvious bewilderment was a retired Orthodox bishop. "You are members of the same Church, are you not?" he asked. We assured him that we were. "You are both Anglo- Catholics?" Once again we answered yes. "How is it, then, that you disagree so strongly?" he continued. "I do not understand." "Neither do I," I was tempted to answer. But, in truth, I understood all too well. Putting the best possible light on our dispute, I could have explained that we Anglicans are a peculiar lot, and that Anglo-Catholics are more peculiar than most. From the beginning we have been a movement divided, numbering among our company radicals and reactionaries, prophets and profiteers, liberals and literalists. I might have added that Anglo-Catholics are as flamboyant as they are disputatious, and that our arguments should be seen as the noisy but harmless recreation of a lovably daft family.

    1 LIBERATING ORTHODOXY: THE ADVENTURE OF ANGLO-CATHOLICISM By John Orens I. Sanctified Ambiguity Anglo-Catholics have always been an exotic species. In nineteenth-century Boston they were especially rare, and Anglo-Catholic monks were all but unheard of. So when the Society of Saint John the Evangelist, the Cowley Fathers, opened a church on Beacon Hill, their arrival was greeted with a mixture of bewilderment and dismay. The story goes that one day a mother and her young daughter encountered one of the monks on his way to church. Astonished by the appearance of the tall figure in his black habit, the little girl turned to her mother and asked, “What’s that?” Sweeping her child into her arms, the mother replied as she rushed away, “That, my dear, is a fanatic.” We Anglo-Catholics have a well-deserved reputation for fanaticism. Sometimes we are fanatical about things that ultimately do not matter: vestments and thuribles, processions and genuflections. Sometimes we are fanatical about things that do matter, such as doctrine and church order, but for the wrong reasons. And sometimes we are just plain fanatical. Consider, for example, the story of Father Wagner of Brighton, who spent his entire fortune building odd churches. One he insisted be given the precise dimensions of Noah’s ark. Another, the underground Chapel of the Resurrection, became so damp that it was eventually turned into a facility for storing meat.     Hull History Centre: Items relating to Conrad Noel and Stanley Evans U DX264 Items relating to Conrad Noel 1895-[1963] and Stanley Evans Biographical Background: Conrad le Despenser Roden Noel was born on 12 July 1869 at Kew. His family was titled and in royal service: his grandfather was the earl of Gainsborough, his aunt was lady in waiting to the queen and his father, Roden Noel, was a groom of the privy chamber. Roden Noel was a poet (Collected Poems [1902]) and biographer of Lord Byron. His mother, Alice de Broe, was the daughter of a Swiss banker. Her health was poor and the Noels frequently 'wintered' in Italy, leaving Conrad with his grandmother, Lady Gainsborough. His mother was an evangelical and his grandmother a Calvinist, making his early religious background rather austere. He attended school at Winchester and Cheltenham, an experience he found unpleasant (he was bullied senselessly), and his later behaviour at Corpus Christi College in Cambridge was so outlandish that it ended with being sent down for a year and not taking his degree (Bellamy & Saville, Dictionary of Labour Biography, ii, pp.276-7; Dyson, Paragon Review, p.11). However, Conrad Noel took away from Cambridge his first meaningful and enduring conversion; reading J L Joynes's The Socialist Catechism and hearing a lecture by Annie Besant turned him into a convinced socialist. Back at home in Brighton private tuition by Herman Joynes was arranged prior to entry into Chichester Theological College in 1893. Noel was very attracted to Roman Catholicism, but emerged from this period of study converted for a second time, this time to high church Anglicanism.
