This project, which will result in an exhibition, is now scheduled to open in the fall of 2015. The show will focus on several technical methods of examining paintings. Stereomicroscopy was performed on three of the nine paintings selected for the project, resulting in micrographs (detailed images of each paintings’ surface) which were analyzed at the workshop. This exciting initiative continues to produce exciting insights into each of the chosen paintings as well as the scientific instruments utilized. Another workshop is scheduled for August 2013. McNeill, 1959 (00-268) New Exhibition: A Vital Force: The Canadian Group of Painters Agnes Etherington Art Centre 16 March–14 July 2013 This exhibition sheds new light on the artistic and social impact of the Canadian Group of Painters in the first and most dynamic decades of its existence, from 1933 to 1953. Canadian Group of Painters exhibi- tions travelled across Canada and into the United States, stirring excitement, reflection and debate on the state of Canadian art and society. The Canadian Group of Painters emerged from the Group of Seven, but it became much more. Its engagement with modern life during the turbulent times of the Depression, World War II and postwar reconstruction made it a vital force. As one critic raved in 1949, “Go up to the gallery … and have your eyes blasted.” A Vital Force: The Canadian Group of Painters is the first major exhibition to focus exclusively on this important artistic group. Bringing together works from public and private collections across Canada, this exhibition conveys the richness of the group’s practice: new visions of landscape, bold depictions of people and fresh experiments in abstraction. Represented are artists as diverse as André Biéler, Jack Bush, Emily Carr, Paraskeva Clark, Lawren S. Harris, E. J. Hughes, Jack Humphrey, Prudence Heward, A. Y. Jackson, Pegi Nicol MacLeod, Jock Macdonald, David Milne, Lilias Torrance Newton, Goodridge Roberts, Carl Schaefer and Marian Dale Scott, among others. This exhibition is organized and circulated by the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Queen’s University, Kingston, in partnership with The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa, and Queen’s University Archives, Kingston, and with the generous support of the Museums Assistance Program at Canadian Heritage, the Ontario Arts Council, the City of Kingston Arts Fund, and the George Taylor Richardson Memorial Fund and Janet Braide Memorial Fund, Queen’s University. Executive Summary In 1998, seven municipalities, each with its own distinct cultural history and infrastructure, came together to form the new City of Toronto. Financial Implications and Impact Statement: There are no financial implications resulting from the adoption of this report. Recommendations: It is recommended that this report and the 2005 Annual Allocations Report submitted by the Toronto Arts Council be received for information. Background: At its meeting held on December 4, 5, and 6, 2001, City Council adopted Clause No. 8 of Report No. 12 as amended, of the Economic Development and Parks Committee dated November 1, 2001, from the Commissioner Economic Development, Culture and Tourism, entitled “Toronto Arts Council - Operating Principles”. By adopting the clause, City Council granted the authority to enter into a five-year agreement with the Toronto Arts Council (TAC) for the administration of the distribution of arts and culture funding on behalf of the City. As required by the Agreement, TAC has submitted its Annual Allocations Report to the Committee, covering the period January to December 2005, reporting on financial information, grants adjudication and results, and a list of recipients. This Annual Allocations Report contains cumulative information previously in the four quarterly reports submitted by TAC. As required by the Agreement, TAC has also submitted its Audited Financial Statements to the Deputy City Manager and Chief Financial Officer, and the Executive Director of Culture. PHOTO BY COURTESY MCMICHAEL CANADIAN ART COLLECTION As this summer began, the Twitter account @CanadaPaintings got hundreds of “likes” when it posted In The Woods, a 1939 painting by Paraskeva Clark, who came to Canada from Russia via Paris in the early 1930s, and who was unusually famous for a 20th-century Canadian woman artist. The painting does exactly what it says on the tin. A keen eye might pick out the influence of Paul Cézanne, but to the casual viewer, it shows the view from behind a rock into a bunch of trees. As a work of art, it is as Canadian as possible under the circumstances, and there is a subtle irony in the fact it is by a woman. Canada is artistically “metrophobic,” says Sarah Milroy, chief curator of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, which has a lot of paintings set in the woods. Canadians do not think of themselves as an urban nation, although they mostly are, and Canadian fine art has perpetuated this distortion. The received wisdom is that Canadian art is about wilderness, and Canadian artists are basically lumberjacks, epitomized in the all-male Group of Seven, the standard against which all else is judged.

    Lisa Steele Creative Director, Vtape 2 I am always looking for people who will immerse themselves in the rich, thick humus of the various pasts that inhabit the shelves at Vtape. In 2009, writer and artist RM Vaughan had an idea for a possible programme at Vtape. it would involve a lot of research, a lot of viewing. That summer he began a curatorial residency at Vtape, looking at work in our holdings. He viewed hundreds of titles – sometimes to the end but not always… He was searching for a programme – or rather, he was on a search for the shape of a programme, what it would look like. Thus began Mid-Life/Shelf Life, RM Vaughan’s rigourously structured (all in pairs, each programme proceeding two-by-two), yet deeply personal survey of video art seen through the lens of a patient searcher. In many ways, Richard Vaughan is an ideal writer/curator to undertake such a survey: he works actively to counter received knowledge, rejecting notions of “the canon” and other – externally imposed - pyramidal structures that dictate how “art” is to be absorbed and categorized. Thanks to the artists who made these works and to their curator. CURATOR’S ESSAY Sweet Gongs Vibrating is a multimedia, multisensory exhibition that breaks with the ocularcentric by embracing myriad modes of perception. Imagine learning new information about a body, a material or a place through the sweet taste of ice-cream, or the gong of a sculpture, or the vibration in a wall. Through direct, embodied visitor contact, Sweet Gongs Vibrating aspires to activate the sensorial qualities of objects in order to illustrate alternative narratives regarding access, place and space. This exhibition includes the work of 20 local, national and international artists (one of which is a collaborative) who explore the multi-modal possibilities of sculpture, site-specific installation, video, and works on paper, constituting an exciting and accessible template for how one might glean untold accounts of everyday surroundings. Each artist in this project has been invited to either contribute extant or create new, site-specific work.

To coincide with Remembrance Day, 11 November 1977, an exhibition of Canadian war art from the two world wars opened at the Rodman Hall Arts Centre in St. Catharines, Ontario. About a month earlier A Terrible Beauty: The Art of Canada at War, billed as the official catalogue for the exhibition, appeared in bookstores across Canada. During the next two years the exhibition will be on gallery tour within Canada, coming to rest for its final show from 1 December 1979 through 20 February 1980 at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. The book/catalogue together with the gallery tour constitute an ambitious, collaborative undertaking. While chiefly the work of Heather Robertson, author of the book's eight-page introduction and selector of the war writings and the exhibit's 102 works of war art reproduced in the book, the publishing of A Terrible Beauty and the mounting of the travelling exhibit awaited the assistance of the publisher James Lorimer and Joan Murray, Director of the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa. Necessary cooperation also came from the National Museums of Canada. Those responsible for A Terrible Beauty have performed a service for Canadians: the rescue of remarkable works of war art from the oblivion to which most of them had been consigned in a warehouse of the Canadian War Museum.
