Fleetwood Mac were founded by guitarist Peter Green, drummer Mick Fleetwood and guitarist Jeremy Spencer, before bassist John McVie joined the lineup for their self-titled debut album. Danny Kirwan joined as a third guitarist in 1968. Let’s take a look at some of Fleetwood Mac’s most famous songs! Little Lies "Little Lies" is a song by British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac from their fourteenth studio album Tango in the Night (1987). Written by band member Christine McVie and her then-husband, Eddy Quintela, the lead vocals were performed primarily by McVie, although the chorus of the song featured brief solo passages by Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. The song was released on 31 August 1987, by Warner Bros. Records, as the third single from Tango in the Night. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Lies) ● Can you guess? There haven’t been many covers of this song however in 2015 a quite popular artist decided to cover this song for a dubstep project. Was it Hilary Duff or Miley Cyrus? Answer: It was Hilary Duff. Hillary Duff covered the song for the TV Comedy drama, Younger, turning it into a dubstep project. Duff plays Kelsey Peters, a friend of the lead character of the show. ● Listen and Learn “Little Lies” is known for its upbeat rhythm. What is the main instrument used in the song? The song was released as the album's first single in December 1976 on both sides of the Atlantic. Written and sung by Lindsey Buckingham, it became the band's first top-ten hit in the United States. In what he described as "a stream of consciousness", he sang the opening line, "Loving you isn't the right thing to do". By 1976 the romantic relationship between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham had come to an end. While Buckingham and Nicks were still on speaking terms, their conversations often devolved into yelling and screaming matches. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_Your_Own_Way ● Finish the Lyric Loving you Isn't the ____________ (right thing to do) How can I ever change things That I feel ● Can you guess? Lindsey Buckingham wrote this song as a message to Stevie Nicks. It describes their break up, with the most obvious line being, “Packing up, shacking up is all you do,” and concluding that he is better off without her - She can go her own way as far as he’s concerned. Do you think Stevie asked Lindsay to take this lyric out? Or did she not realize it was about her and never thought about asking? Answer: Stevie Nicks definitely knew this lyric was about her! In fact, Stevie insisted that she never did in fact shack up when they were together. Stevie begged Lindsay to take this lyric out of the song, however Lindsay wouldn’t do it. Takes to the sky ________________ (Like a bird in flight). And who will be her lover? All your life you've never seen Woman taken by the wind ● Reflection Nicks discovered the Rhiannon character in the early 1970s through a novel called Triad by Mary Bartlet Leader. “It was just a stupid little paperback that I found somewhere at somebody’s house, lying on the couch,” Nicks says more than 40 years on. “It was called Triad [written by Mary Leader] and it was all about this girl who becomes possessed by a spirit named Rhiannon. I read the book, but I was so taken with that name that I thought: ‘I’ve got to write something about this.’ So I sat down at the piano and started this song about a woman that was all involved with these birds and magic. loudersound.com/features/the-story-behind-the-song-rhiannon-by-fleetwood-mac How does this song make you feel when listening to it? • Some Advice for Phone-Addicted Youth Who Want To
The Roots Report: Look What’s Going Down: Artists have a duty to voice their opinions Okee dokee folks… “It’s s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound, everybody look what’s going down.” This is from one of the most famous protest songs ever written, “For What It’s Worth,” by Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield). It was written more than 50 years ago in response to the Sunset Strip curfew riots in California and is still revered as one of the best songs of that generation. A few years later, Neil Young wrote his song “Ohio” about the Kent State shootings. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young quickly recorded this song, and when it was released as a single, it was backed with another Stephen Stills protest anthem “Find The Cost Freedom.” At the time, “Ohio” was banned by some radio stations, but today it is one of the few actual protest songs still being played on radio. These songs, the bands and the writers were major inspirations and influences for me as a musician and songwriter. Not only do I perform “Ohio” with my band Forever Young and “For What It’s Worth” when I play solo, but I have written many sociopolitical songs of my own that are part of my body of solo work. I feel protest songs need to be written, but they are the hardest type of song to get right. They need to express the concern and anger of the subject matter and marry it perfectly with a melody to make the song viable.

  • MTO 21.1: Hough, Elements of Style in Stevie Nicks
Volume 21, Number 1, March 2015 Copyright © 2015 Society for Music Theory Elements of Style in Three Demo Recordings by Stevie Nicks Matthew T. Hough NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: http://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.15.21.1/mto.15.21.1.hough.php KEYWORDS: rock, pop, harmony, composition, Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac ABSTRACT: This article examines demo recordings of three songs by Stevie Nicks in terms of compositional style and in relation to conventions of rock harmony. Sections from two of Nicks’ unreleased solo demo recordings are compared to publicly released versions of the same songs, revealing distinctive stylistic elements and their subsequent normalization. Compositional applications for rock music based on structural and contrapuntal techniques found in these demo recordings are also presented. Received January 2015 Introduction [1.1] Stephanie “Stevie” Nicks (b. 1948 in Phoenix, Arizona) is one of rock’s best known female performers of the last fifty years. Despite her many decades of fame, investigation into Nicks’ work as a composer remains scarce. This is perhaps not due to a lack of interest; her close association with numerous collaborators—most notably, guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and other members of the band Fleetwood Mac—often makes pinpointing Nicks’ individual compositional traits difficult. As released to the public, Nicks’ songs invariably contain significant contributions from these collaborators in the form of instrumental or vocal arrangements and production. Recently, examples of Nicks’ unreleased demo recordings have begun to appear on YouTube and various file-sharing sites. In many of these recordings, Nicks is heard singing and playing a keyboard instrument without additional accompaniment.

  • Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell
Mike & Marcie Campbell Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Wife Marcie ‘Won’t Back Down for the Animals’ By Melissa Maroff If life mirrors song, Mike Campbell “got lucky babe” when he found his wife Marcie. Before he went on to fame as lead guitarist for one of the world’s greatest rock bands, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Mike met Marcie -- literally because of a dog. It was in 1974 at an LA Halloween party where Marcie brought her dog Medena; Mike mistakenly called Medena “Daisy,” the name of the host’s dog. Marcie had to set him straight -- and the rest as they say, is rock and roll history. “I connected with the dog and then found out the dog came with her,” Mike says. “If it weren’t for the dog, we probably wouldn’t have met.” And for two dog lovers it was “something very good from the get go,” they admit. After 34 years of marriage, the love is still strong, which is evident the minute you see them together. They compliment each other; both have a sense of humor, don’t take themselves too seriously and love their family, which extends to their animal family -- and other animals as well. Mike Campbell has a resume that speaks for itself. In addition to playing on and co- producing Tom Petty and The Heatbreakers albums and co-writing some of their biggest hits, he has also co-penned other classics like Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around (Petty’s duet with Stevie Nicks) and Don Henley’s iconic Boys of Summer, which ranks among Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

o R M D EVERY MUSICIAN KNOWS IT’s THE RHYTHM SECTION THAT HOLDS a band together. But who knew we’d find as durable an application of that maxim as the one exemplified by the history of Fleetwood Mac? & Over the last thirty years, Fleetwood Mac has comprised fifteen musicians shuffled through six major lineups, resulting in endless tin- kerings with tone and genre. Yet the two members to survive it all rarely write tunes and never front the recordings. They’re the beat- keepers - drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John Me Vie. The fact that a rhythm section could sustain a band through thirty years seems all the more amazing considering the traumatic histories of the band’s shifting array o f stage-front stars. Together, their personal lives have given rock one of its most elaborate and juicy plotlines.
