It is proposed that unraveling the relational aspects of grammar involves the recognition that semantic roles fall into two types, thematic relations and macroroles, and that grammatical relations are not universal and are not constituted in the same way in every language in which they exist. The concepts of thematic relations, semantic macroroles, and grammatical relations are explained, and evidence :DIf cross-linguistic variation in grammatical relations is presented from a variety of languages including Acehnese, Zapotec, Walpiri, English, and Dyirbal. Implications for langua7e acquisition and the analysis of child language are also discussed. Introduction' Concepts like `agent' and 'subject' figure prominently in discussions of child language and acquisition, and yet there are a number of important issues lurking in these terms. 'Agent' and `patient', for example, are often used in two distinct senses: on some occasions, they are meant literally us the wilful instigator of an action and as the entity undergoing a change of state or condition, and on other occasions, they are used to denote the two primary arguments of a transitive predication, with 'agent' and 'patient' being cover terms of groups of distinct semantic roles which seem to function as 'logical subject' and 'logical object' of the verb. Grammatical relations, on the other hand, are often taken as unproblematdcally given. In this paper the nature of semantic roles and grammatical rela- tions will be explored, as well as their interaction in language development. These issues will be investigated from the perspective of Role and Reference Grammar [RRG].2 1 Semantic roles Most syntactic theories assume some notion of semantic roles [SRs] but do not deal with basic questions which have remained unanswered since the original proposals of Fillmore and Gruber: what is the correct universal inventory of roles? what governs which role(s) a particular verb takes? Furthermore, there is the fundamental issue of the relation of SRs to GRs: is it universally predictable? The answers to the questions have important consequences for language acquisition, for the greater the degree of ar- bitrariness in the relationship between verbs and role(s) or between SRs and GRs, the more difficult the task facing the child is. The first step that RRG takes in answering these ques- tions is to posit two types of SRs, corresponding roughly to the two senses of 'agent' and 'patient' mentioned in §1. They are termed 'thematic relations' and 'semantic macroroles'. 2.1 Thematic relations The question of the inventory of thematic relations [ThRs] in linguistic theory cannot be answered without a clarificadon of their function. In Fillmore's original theory, they had two functions: (1) they played a central role in the representation of the lexical meaning of verbs, e.g. 'open [(A) (I) 0]', and (2) they functioned in the statement of syntactic rules. Since most contemporary theories assume that syntax is auton- omous, the second function is no longer relevant in them. ThRs serve only as a means of lexical representation in these theories, and it is this function that has led to disputes regar- ding the number of roles; if ThRs are representations of lexical meaning, then a large num- ber will be required to express the great variety of verbal semantic contrasts. RRG differs from other syntactic theories with respect to both of these points. It denies the autonomy of syntax, and therefore SRs play a direct role in syntax. On the other hand, ThRs have no direct role in the representation of lexical meaning. Rather, this is accomp- lished by means of the system of lexical decomposition put forth in Dowty 1979. Four classes of verbs are proposed, based on their inherent temporal properties or Akrionsart: states, activities, achievements, and accomplishments. Dowty provides syntactic and se- mantic tests for determining the class of a verb (see Dowty 1979:60). Examples of the decomposition are given in 1: (a) isa state, (b) an achievement, (c an accomplishment, and (d) an activity. (1) a. The lamp is broken. broken' (the lamp) b. The lamp broke. The lamp is shaking shake' (the lamp) These representations are significant because first, they representa fundamentally different approach to lexical representation from lists of ThRs, and second, instead ofthe semantic representation of a verb being based on ThRs, ThRsare derived from the decompositions. Following Jackendoff 1976, ThRs are defined in terms ofargument positions in lexical representations, e.g. 'patient' is the single argument ofa state predicate (the lamp in la,b,c). Thus, in a theory in which the primary role of ThRs is in thesyntax and not in the lexicon, only a small number of distinct ThRs need be posited.Moreover, because there are syntactic and semantic tests (which make no reference to ThRs) which determine the Aktionsart class of a verb and because the ThRs ofa verb are function of its lexical representation, which is a function of its class, the assignment of ThRsto verbs in RRG is independently motivated. The notion of 'agent' is generally consideredone of the most important ThRs, but it is not in fact clear that it is of the same nature as the other ThRs. If ThRsare a lexical property of verbs, then tney should be invariable in the dilerentcontexts in which a verb (with a specific Aktionsart) is used. But this isnot the case, as the examples in 2 show, (2) a. John (accidentally) killed his neighbor. b. John (*accidentally) murdered his neighbor. It is often assumed that both kill and murder takean agent argument, but if this is the case, then they both should not cooccur with an adverb like accidentally which contradicts the meaning of intended action which isa central component of agency. This prediction is correct only with murder; kill is compatible with a non-intentional, hence non-agentive, interpretation of its subject. This suggests strongly that the subject of kill,unlike that of murder, is not an agent but rather is what in RRGis called an EFFECTOR, the instigating, causing, effecting participant in a situation (Bill in lc); this ThR isneutral with respect to intent and control. However, given that John klled his neighborcan be interpreted with John acting volitionally and intentionally, where does this interpretationof the subject as an agent come from, if not from the lexical semantic properties of the verb? It has long been argued that one of theways to differentiate entailments which are inherent semantic properties of lexical items from pragmatic entailments is through the defeasibilitytest: if the meaning is defeasible or cancellable, then it isnot an inherent semantic property but a pragmatic implication. The defeasibility of of the agentive interpretation ofthe subject in 2a indicates that it does not follow from the lexical meaning of kill,whereas the fact that it cannot be cancelled with murder signals that it is an inherent part of the verb's meaning. Holisky 1987 argues that for most activity and accomplishmentverbs, the interpretation of their subject as agentive is a pragmatic implicature, basedon the principle that human effec- tors are normally interpreted as agents, unless there issome explicit element (like acciden- tally in 2) that blocks the implicatare. Thus 'agent'is not really a distinct ThR like effec- tor, experiencer, theme, or patient; rather, it isan additional interpretation which is added to one of the basic ThRs. The subject of murder in 2b is an effector which obligatorilyre- ceives an agentive reading, while the subject of kill in 2a isan effector which optionally 158 gets this interpretation. Similarly, the subject of see is an experiencer, while that of look at is an agentive experiencer. 2.2 Semantic macroroles It was noted in §1 that 'agent' and 'patient'are often used to refer broadly to the two primary arguments in a transitive predication, theterms being ap- plied to the arguments of both kill andsee in this sense, even though the ThRs of tnese verbs are not the same.

In contrast, the grammatical properties of lexical modals (i.e., thematic verbs) are less understood. In this paper, we use the Tagalog necessity modal kailangan and English need as a case study in the syntax-semantics of lexical modals. Kailangan and need enter two structures, which we call ‘thematic’ and ‘impersonal’. We show that when they establish a thematic dependency with a subject, they express necessity in light of this subject’s priorities, and in the absence of an overt thematic subject, they express necessity in light of priorities endorsed by the speaker. To account for this, we propose a single lexical entry for kailangan / need that uniformly selects for a ‘needer’ argument. In thematic constructions, the needer is the overt subject, and in impersonal constructions, it is an implicit speaker-bound pronoun. GAGNÉ University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada We examined how people use their knowledge of events to recover thematic role structure dur- ing the interpretation of noun–noun phrases. All phrases included one noun that was a good-agent/ poor-patient ( prosecutor) in a particular event (accuse), and the other noun was a good-patient/poor-agent (defendant) for the same event. If people interpret the noun–noun phrases by inverting the nouns and ap- plying a thematic relation (see Downing, 1977; Levi, 1978), phrases should be interpreted more easily when the head nouns typically are good agents and the modifiers are good patients for specific events. Two experiments supported these predictions. Furthermore, the results indicated that in the less pre- ferred thematic order (agent–patient), people often generated interpretations in which the modifiers became the focus of the interpretations. This finding suggests that violating thematic role preferences is one constraint on when the inversion process occurs during noun–noun interpretation. The data come from the two interviews taken from two young native Sindhi speakers, which consist of 2 hours conversation having 1,669 sentences in natural spoken version of the Sindhi language. Towards the end, it has been found that the Sindhi language has certain theta roles which are assigned by the verbs to their arguments in sentences.

    Events and Maximalization: The Case of Telicity and Perfectivity1 HANA FILIP University of Florida ABSTRACT. This paper advances the thesis that telicity in natural languages fundamentally relies on the maximalization operation in the domain of events. What counts as a maximal event in the denotation of a telic sentence in a given situation is derived from basic components of meaning that are directly related to the grammar of measurement and closely related scalar semantics. The maximalization operation on events is at the intersection of telicity in Germanic languages and the semantics of the grammatical category of perfectivity, as it is instantiated in Slavic languages, for example. Telicity viewed as maximalization on events provides us with a deeper understanding of the well-known differences in the way in which verbs interact with their nominal arguments and modifiers in the calculation of telicity of verb phrases and sentences in these two language families. 1. Introduction The goal of this paper is to address the following basic questions: What is the nature of telicity? How is it encoded? How is the semantic property of telicity related to perfectivity, a formal property of verbs? The answers will be couched within a semantically and pragmatically motivated framework. The main thesis is that telicity fundamentally relies on the maximalization operation in the domain of events (Section 2). Telic predicates denote events that are maximal with respect to an abstract representation of measurement, i.e., a scale. Recent Findings HBPM more accurately reflects the risk of cardiovascular events than office blood pressure measurement. In addition, there is high-quality evidence that HBPM combined with clinical support improves blood pressure control. Therefore, HBPM is increasingly recommended by guidelines to confirm the diagnosis of hypertension and evaluate the efficacy of blood pressure-lowering medications. Nevertheless, HBPM use remains low due to barriers from the patient, clinician, and healthcare system level. Understanding these barriers is crucial for developing strategies to effectively implement HBPM into routine clinical practice. Summary HBPM is a valuable adjunct to office blood pressure measurement for diagnosing hypertension and guiding antihy- pertensive therapy.     Chapter 3 Information structure and the partition of the sentence The term information structure was introduced by Halliday (1967b, 200). It informally describes the organization of a spoken sentence, which is independent - and sometimes even orthogonal to - syntactic constituency: Any text in spoken English is organized into what may be called 'information units'. (...) this is not determined (...) by constituent structure. Rather could it be said that the distribution of information specifies a distinct structure on a different plan. This level is motivated as the functional correlate of the intonational phrases of an utterance, which are Halliday's "tone groups" (see section 2.3): The distribution into information units represents the speaker's blocking out of the message into quanta of information, or message blocks. Each information unit is realized as one tone group, in the sense that the information structure specifies the boundaries of the tone group to within certain limits (...). (Halliday 1967b, 202) This description of information structure as blocks or units of information is the most neutral one in the literature. So far, information structure is defined by (i) the general concept of information units and (ii) by correlation to intonational phrasing. Halliday himself adds further aspects to this concept, such as a thematic organiza- tion and the primacy of a division into two parts. The combination of these two additional aspects yields the common picture of information structure as a dichotomy of the sentence: The information structure of a sentence consists of two parts, one more informative and one less informative. The contrast is either marked by word order or by intonation.

    On the Architecture of P¯an.ini’s Grammar∗ Paul Kiparsky Stanford University 1 Organization of the Grammar 1.1 Introduction P¯an. ini’s grammar is universally admired for its insightful analysis of Sanskrit. In addition, some of its features have a more specialized appeal. Sanskritists prize the completeness of its descriptive coverage of the spoken standard language (bh¯as.¯a) of P¯an. ini’s time, and the often unique information it provides on Vedic, regional and even sociolinguistic usage.1 Theoretical linguists of all persuasions are in addition impressed by its remarkable conciseness, and by the rigorous consistency with which it deploys its semi-formalized metalanguage, a grammatically and lexically regimented form of Sanskrit. Empiricists like Bloomfield also admired it for another, more specific reason, namely that it is based on nothing but very general principles such as simplicity, without prior commitments to any scheme of “universal grammar”, or so it seems, and proceeds from a strictly synchronic perspective. Generative linguists for their part have marveled especially at its ingenious technical devices, and at intricate system of conventions governing rule application and rule interaction that it presupposes, which seem to uncannily anticipate ideas of modern linguistic theory (if only because many of them were originally borrowed from P¯an. ini in the first place). This universal admiration of P¯an. ini poses a problem. Why do linguists who don’t approve of each other nevertheless agree in extolling P¯an. ini? Each school of linguistics seems to fashion its own portrait of P¯an. ini. In the following pages I propose to reconcile the Bloomfieldian portrait of P¯an.

    The Origins of Telicity Manfred Krifka 1. Introduction The distinction between telic and atelic predicates has been described in terms of the algebraic prop- erties of their meaning since the early days of model-theoretic semantics. This perspective was in- spired by Aristotle’s discussion of types of actions that do or do not take time to be completed1 which was taken up and turned into a linguistic discussion of action-denoting predicates by Vendler (1957). The algebraic notion that seemed to be most conducive to express the Aristotelian distinc- tion appeared to be the mereological notion of a part, applied to the time at which these predicates hold: atelic predicates, like push a cart, have the subinterval property, that is, whenever they are true at a time interval, then they are true at any part of that interval; this does not hold for telic predicates, like eat an apple, cf. Bennett & Partee (1972), Taylor (1977), and Dowty (1979)2. Bach (1986) integrated these insights into a semantics based on events. Work by Garey (1957), Verkuyl (1972) and Platzack (1979) showed that the aspectual properties of a predicate result from two sources, the nature of the verbal head and the nature of a nominal argument. For example, whereas eat two apples is telic, eat apples is atelic. The early accounts of this phenomenon used syntactic features to describe this phenomenon; for example, Verkuyl ana- lyzed eat two apples by saying that eat has a feature [+ ADD TO] that allows for the feature [+ SPECIFIED QUANTITY] to percolate from the object NP an apple to the VP eat two apples.
