FEATURED FACILITIES - NEW TO THE CITY OF TORRINGTON

FRANKLIN PLAZA

Franklin Plaza is scheduled to open in 2020. The plaza will be available to rent for programs and events. The City of Torrington anticipates that Franklin Plaza will be an attractive venue for events throughout the year for the community to enjoy. TORRINGTON DOG PARK AT JOHN TORO SPORTS COMPLEX The City of Torrington Plans to open a Dog Park at John Toro Sports Complex in 2020. The city will be looking for sponsors and individuals to assist with fundraising to add additional amenities to the Dog Park. DISC COURSE AT ALVORD PARK

The first 9 holes of the Disc Golf Course at Alvord Park will officially open in the Spring of 2020. The Parks and Recreation Department has plans to expand the course to 18 holes and is looking for volunteers and sponsors to assist with this goal. The Next Generation of Dance, Gymnastics & Fitness Summer Session begins June 27 - August 22, 2020 (No class 7/4) Fee: $100.00 for 8 Weeks Dance Instructors/Fitness Trainers: Sherry S. IRISH STEP DANCING - LEARN DANCES OF THE EMERALD ISLE!

Traditional and Contemporary Irish Step Dancing, Ceili Dancing, and Group Figures. Irish Dance is a lively, quick, and very fun genre. Children usually love it. Classes are taught by Jack McArdle, who has over 35 years experience, including performances at Carnegie Hall and on Irish TV. Jack achieved certification as a master teacher of Irish Dance with the Irish Dance Commission in Dublin, Ireland. All dancers aim for mastery of the art; many join the performance team; some undertake the more intense commitment needed to gain world-class status in contemporary work. All are welcome. NORTHWEST VOCAL SHOWCASE

This year marks the 15th Anniversary of this very popular singing competition. Start preparing now for your audition. Auditions will consist of each participant singing a cappella. Location: Pinewoods Racquet Club This Adult Beginner Tennis Program will teach you the basics of Tennis and will have you learning how to play real Instructor: Pinewoods Racquet Club Staff games by the end of it. The class will cover ground strokes, volleys, and serving, as well as, scoring and doubles positioning when the students are ready. Participants should wear sneakers and will be able to borrow club tennis racquets if needed.

Multi Sports:

*Multi Sports Camp - Gives players the opportunity to experience a variety of sports throughout the program including soccer, , flag football, cricket, handball, and more! Players will work on developing their skills in each sport before participating in small tournament-style scrimmages.

*Squirts Multi Sports Camp - Allows children to try a variety of different sports throughout the season including lacrosse, soccer, T-ball and track & field. All sports are taught in a safe environment.

*Parent & Me Multi Sports Camp - This program allows children aged 2-3 to experience a variety of sports throughout their program with a helping hand from Mom or Dad! Children will have the opportunity to try Lacrosse, Soccer, T-Ball, Track & Field and Parachute Games in a safe, structured environment.* The Multi Sports - Parent & Me Squirts program is ideal for any child that needs a little help from Mom or Dad. This is an excellent opportunity for you to spend quality time together while easing your child into social situations with support and confidence, which will enable them to move onto our Multi Sports Squirts classes.

*As with all Squirts programs, the emphasis is on safety, fun and learning. All sports are presented in a positive and relaxed environment with an emphasis on participation, interaction and communication.

TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT

Saturday, April 11, 2020 Armory - 153 South Main Street, Torrington Torrington Parks and Recreation Department is holding a Table Tennis Tournament open to Adults in Litchfield County. The registration deadline is April 10, 2020. Ages 40 & under will be begin at 8:30 AM Over 40 age group will begin at 10:00 AM Double elimination. Round one will be played to 11 points, round two will be played to 21 points. Prizes will be awarded. $5.00 entry fee per participant - registrations will be accepted the day of the event. Please arrive 1/2 hour prior to the starting time of each age group. **All participants should bring a pair of sneakers to change into.

SUMMER BASKETBALL LEAGUE WALKING AT THE This league, in its 36th year, will be using the following format and team entry fees: ARMORY Dates: June 18 - August 11, 2020 Location: Armory and School Gyms Fee: Torrington Team: Div II-VIII: $680.00; Out-of-Town Team: $780.00 Div I: $550.00 - partially sponsored by North End Alumni. Monday - Friday evenings, Saturday daytime, and some Sundays. Start date subject to change. Divisions: Division I Returning High School Boys Come out and exercise and make new Division II Returning High School Girls friends. BABYSITTING SAFETY & CPR CERTIFICATION

This course is for youths age 11-17 and is a combination of the Babysitter Safety 101 & 102 classes previously offered. This is an entry level course intended to teach age appropriate skills necessary to care for children of all ages using team babysitting, mother’s helper and individual babysitting concepts. The course focuses on personal safety and interview skills. Basic first aid and obstructed airway management for a conscious, choking adult/child and infant will be covered. First Aid including adult and child CPR (requires passing a written and skills test to receive 2 year certification), booklet, handouts and Babysitter Safety Certificate of completion included.

The Torrington Teen Center, located in Recreation Hall on East Albert Street will be open for Middle School and High School Students. Come down with your friends and enjoy a game of pool, ping-pong, video games, board games, listen to music, watch TV, or just hang out and unwind after school. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Supervision by Corrine Beecher and Teen Center Staff. For more information, please call - (860) 482-6928. The Teen Center closes for the summer at the end of the 2020-21 School Year and reopens after Labor Day.

WICKED COOL VET SCHOOL Do you dream of becoming a veterinarian? Grab your lab coat, animal lovers! We will learn about our favorite furry, flying and fishy friends. Make amazing animal models, build big bones and investigate animal intestines from our favorite vertebrates: birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish. WOW! SCIENCE Have fun with a science scramble of totally random experiments, models and science adventures. Start with cartoon character science to explore Pokémon physics and explore geology with Steven Universe. Next, delve into candy chemistry using chromatography & make a jar that glows like fireflies. We’ll grow seeds on a sponge tower and build a working monocular to explore the tiny worlds around us. Brixology: Engineering with LegoTM Brixology sets the foundation for our next generation of makers! Kids learn about different types of engineering and then team up to construct a different engineering-themed project using LEGOTM bricks. Your future engineer will build upon their creativity to solve real-world design challenges, while developing their problem-solving and team-building skills.

Rockin’ Rockets Children will step into the shoes of a rocket scientist and learn the fundamentals of flight, propulsion and rocket design. We’ll have fun exploring astronomy and trying out various flight designs from hot air balloons to hovercrafts (and many more)! Kids will build rockets as well as discover the fundamental concepts involved in launching and recovering many types of rockets. Students will make and take home their own completed Mad Science rocket. The Torrington Parks and Recreation Department has many bus trips to offer for the Spring and Summer Months. The bus trips are coordinated with Silver Mill Tours out of Meriden, CT, with the exception of casino trips. Anyone interested in registering for a bus trip, should register and process payment through the Torrington Parks and Recreation Department directly. The Torrington Parks and Recreation Department will then notify Silver Mill Tours and someone from Silver Mill Tours will contact you with a confirmation, your seat assignment, and all the necessary details for the bus trip. Payment will be accepted in the office or online. Credit Card Payments may be made online only. Anyone registering for a bus trip must fill out a Trip Reservation Form and submit it to the Torrington Parks and Recreation Department. Please note, that the bus picks up at the Route 10 Commuter Lot off Exit 3 on 691 for all bus trips, however if we sell 25 or more seats for any given bus trip, the bus will pick up at a location in Torrington. Departure and Return times to be confirmed by Silver Mill Tours. Most trips leave from the Cheshire location at 7:00 AM and leave destination for return trip to Cheshire at around 5:00 PM. 1. Registration and payment for trips and leagues must be made in person at the Torrington Parks and Recreation Office, located inside the Armory at 153 South Main Street.

2. Registration for all programs, lessons etc. may be made either in person or be mailed to the Torrington Parks and Recreation Department, 153 South Main Street, Torrington, CT 06790. Mail-in registrations MUST be postmarked one week prior to the starting time of any program.

3. Please observe any deadlines indicated. ABSOLUTELY NO LATE REGISTRATIONS ARE ACCEPTED - THEY WILL BE RETURNED. Registrations are accepted on first come, first served basis.

4. Torrington residents are given first priority to register for all programs. Non-residents may register for programs on an availability basis one week prior to the start of the program. This does not apply to adult sports leagues, lessons and trips.

5. When enrollment is insufficient, classes and/or leagues may be cancelled and/or combined. All programs in this brochure are subject to change.

6. If the program you wish to register for is full, you will be placed on a waiting list and will be notified immediately in the event that there is an opening in that program.

7. If a program is cancelled by Torrington Parks and Recreation, a full refund or credit will be given.

8. Requests made two weeks or more prior to the start of any program will be refunded. After this point, absolutely NO refunds or credits will be given unless there are medical reasons, accompanied by a written physician’s note.

9. Up until two weeks before the date of a trip, one may request a full refund or credit only if the program’s minimum participant requirement is still met. Otherwise, there will be no refunds on trips. If a trip is cancelled by Torrington Parks and Recreation, a full refund or credit will be given.

10.To receive a refund, a written request must be submitted. Refunds take approximately 2 weeks to process.

11. Cash or Checks are accepted for all registrations mailed in or dropped off at the Parks and Recreation Department. Participants may also register and pay with a credit card through our online system on our website www.torringtonct.org. An additional fee is assessed for all credit card transactions.

12. If a payment made by check is returned for insufficient funds, the person making payment must pay the program fee, plus a $20.00 processing fee in cash or money order prior to being able to participate in the program.

The City of Torrington Park & Recreation Department Program (as defined below, “Program”) involves a variety of physical activities and there is an element of risk involved, which each participant must assume (including injury, disability or death).
