B’GAN KEHILLAH: IN OUR COMMUNITY GARDEN

“The best place to seek God is in a garden.” - George Bernard Shaw, The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God, 1932

What do you see first when you enter a garden? Drawn in by color or fragrance, is it the flowers? Is it fresh food – vegetables and fruit ready to be plucked and enjoyed immedi- ately? Are you calmed by orderly rows or intrigued by meandering paths? Do you like to sit in a garden and meditate or roll up your sleeves and plunge your hands into the dirt?

Gardens can have one theme or several; they’re ever-changing works in progress. We’re excited to begin our own community garden – Gan Kehillah – at Temple Beth Hillel- Beth El with a specific goal and several hopes.

Our goal is to produce food for our community to be shared among our programs that address hunger and saving some of the bounty for our Kiddush lunches. Our hope is that as the garden grows, our children will participate in learning there, our congregation will enjoy its beauty, and those of us who love to cultivate our own gardens will find one another and share our energies.
