Spring 2021 DEAR MARIST FAMILY, 03 t was just over a year ago, that the impact of the pandemic was felt School News here and around the world. There was uncertainty, fear, and change to varying degrees in its wake. And yet, we remained true to who we are as Marist. 15 I Athletic News Hemingway wrote, “Now is not the time to think of what you do not have. Think of what you can do with what there is.” I find that to be true 20 of what we have done here. We adjusted, pivoted, Advancement News and responded to the restrictions, protocols, and most importantly, the needs of our students. 24 Alumni News • Marist returned to hybrid learning in August 2020. • We expanded to in-person learning five days per week in half-day shifts in January 2021. • Our Advancement Department doubled its efforts to increase financial assistance fundraising for families impacted by the pandemic, and the Marist community responded generously. • Though group activities have been impacted, we have celebrated 2 Mass and the Sacraments during the year. • Ou r RedHawks have proudly competed in albeit different types of seasons, but still brought “honor, glory, and fame” alongside the arts and activities that continued to shine. • The Admissions Department accepted the class of 2025, with On the cover: Champagnat Day artwork by more than 400 future RedHawks among it.     Volume 2, Issue No. 42 November 8, 2020 UPDATES Long way home… After months of waiting to return home, I have finally and safely arrived in General Santos City last November 5. I went directly to the Sacred Heart Formation House where I would do the mandatory 14-day quarantine. It was a long way home not only because it was literally a long trip from Cuba but also I was originally set to return to the Province last March just when lockdowns were imposed, airports were closed, and flights were cancelled consequently. There were few times that we have tried to book flights but because of the closure of airports of Cuba, it was quite impossible. The difficulty of flying was not only because of the requirements being asked in many countries or airports but Montagne Community - Holguín, Cuba with Mons. also Cuba practically had not yet opened its Emilio (Bishop of Holguín) airports for regular commercial flights. I was just so lucky that we were able to book one of the last available tickets with Copa Airlines humanitarian flight to Panama. And so, my journey began. Three days before my flight from Havana, I had to undergo a swab test (RT-PCR) as demanded by the government of Panama. The test was free in Cuba! The result came negative two days later. Since our community is in Holguin, I had to travel to Havana the night before the flight. It was a 12-hour bus ride. Our flight was the only flight that day from Havana but it was a full flight to Panama.
