The first missionaries came out to South Africa in 1829. The Society operated chiefly in the North Western Cape and in South West Africa/Namibia. One of the most prominent mission stations was established at Wupperthal in 1830.

MISSIONARY SOCIETY

The first missionaries arrived in South Africa in 1829 with the intention of working in the Bechuana country, but the depredations caused by Mzilikazi's wars made this impossible. They therefore proceeded to the territory of the chief Moshesh (now known as Lesotho) where they were welcomed with joy. Their first station, Morija, was founded in 1834.

3.14 BERLIN MISSIONARY SOCIETY

Founded in 1824 in Berlin. The first five missionaries of this mission arrived in South Africa in 1834. Their first station, Bethanie, was established in what is now the Orange Free State, in the country of the Korannas. By 1850 the Society had stations in the Cape Colony and Natal. It was the first to establish missions in the Transvaal, ( 1860) from where it penetrated to Mashonaland.

3.15 AMERICAN BOARD OF MISSIONS

The Board's first group of missionaries, which included Daniel Lindley, Aldin Grout and Dr. N. Adams, arrived in South Africa in 1835. By 1850 twelve stations had been established in Natal. The American Zulu Mission was the first to complete the translation of the whole Bible into Zulu. In 1893-1894 missions were also established in the then Rhodesia and on the Witwatersrand. The American Board - now named the United Church Board of World Ministries - has also been responsible for the founding of medical and educational institutions, e.g. McCord Zulu Hospital and Adams College.
