Sitrep-1: Floods in 24th May 2016

A. SITUATION REPORT

Due to continuous rainfall in the past few days in Manipur has led to raised water level in many major rivers following in valley areas. River bank was breached on 23rd May at Kyamgei Muslim Loukon has expanded from 50 feet to 400 feet, sweeping away many houses and inundating thousands of paris of paddy fields.

Rivers above Danger Level: The water level of Imphal River remains steady although it is flowing above danger level; Nambul River and River have started overflowing at different points. River is approaching warning level at 778.750 meters.

Meanwhile, it is reported that eight houses at TM Dingpi village, Khengjoi sub- division were destroyed by thunderstorm. Affected families are now taking refuge at Joupi village.

As per IMD, the rainfall recorded in Manipur is 13 mm as on 24th May 2015.

B. IMAPCT OF FLOODS SITUTAION:

Total no. of floods affected districts: 04 Thoubal, Bishnupur, Imphal East and Imphal West Impact of the floods situation in the districts:

 At least 15 houses have been swept away and 2000 paris of paddy fields have been inundated Kyamgei Muslim Oinam Loukon.

Meanwhile waters overflowing from Kongba River have flooded headquarters () and many Government offices including Imphal East DC complex, Imphal East District Police headquarters, JNIMS hospital and also schools and college located in the area.

 50 paris of fish farms at Khunou Hougram-pat, Keibul, Kha Thinungei, Laphu-pokpi and Samuputhabi have been affected by flood water.

 Many parts of have also been affected by flood submerging many households. Moirang Multipurpose Hr Secondary School, Moirang Police Station have been flooded. Many households were inundated by flood water in various parts of Moirang. Many households in Ngangkhalawai have also been flooded.

 A fish farm covering an area of around 30 paris under Moirangkhunou GP, Bishnupur ward no 8/5/5 has been destroyed in the flood.

 Vegetable farms and houses at Nambol Kongkham, Nambol Awang, Nambol Mongjing, Nambol Sabal Leikai, Nambol Makha Leikai, Top Khabi, Thanga, Kumbi, Moirang Part I, Moirang Part II, Chengei, Thoya, Kokilbon, Sribon and Phubala have been inundated by flood water.

 Overflowing river water have also flooded many houses in Charangpat, Kwakta Khuman, Kwakta Santhong and Kwakta Sevla

 Many schools, houses, community halls, temples, playgrounds, clubs and crematoriums located on and along Imphal River banks have been flooded. It is reported that the roads of Thangmeiband Polem Leikai have been inundated by water overflowing from Naga rivulet.It is reported that the roads and streets of Hodam Leirak, Kwakeithel Thokchom Leikai and Paona Bazar have been flooded.

 In , many houses at Tentha, Sangai-yumpham, , Keirak and Wabagai have been inundated by overflowing river water.

 Around 300 houses in Tentha Khunou Maning Leikai have been affected after a breach in nearby river bank.

 Large tracts of agricultural land in Khundrakpam AC have also been submerged in flood water caused by heavy rainfall that lashed the State on May 20 and 21.

 Nongsum and eight other adjoining villages in Imphal East district remained cut off from the rest of the State today as around half-feet deep flood water coming from Khamenlok river was flowing above Uyumpok-Nongshum road for around half a kilometre.

Impacts on Infrastructure:

 The strong current of flood water also washed away the wooden bridge built over the Sengmai River, which connects Kakching Wairi Leikai, Kakching Chumnang and Phousupat Leikai.

 The other bridge carried away by the flood water connects Kakching Chumnang and Kakching Wairi Thongam Leikai.

 The heavy rainfall also led overflow of water from Wangjing River, inundating six residential houses at Sangai Yumpham Part II Pulleipokpi Salam Macha. Many paddy fields in the area have been submerged in water.

 On Monday, Manipur was on the verge of being cut off from the rest of the country after rockslides hit the Imphal-Dimapur highway (NH-2) near Kohima in Nagaland, even as torrential rains continued to wreak havoc in the state.

C. RESPONSE BY GOVERNMENT AND HUMANITARIAN AGENCIES

 Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Manipur has been keeping close watch on the situation.  Local MLA and social workers are leading in taking up relief works in the areas affected by the flood.  IAG-Manipur and Sphere is closely monitoring the situation.
