ComEd, Park District & City’s Favorite Cultural

Organizations “Switch on Summer” at Buckingham Fountain

CHICAGO (May 11, 2015) — On Saturday, ComEd, in partnership with the Chicago Park District, officially welcomed the warmer weather at Buckingham Fountain with the “Switch on Summer” event. Visitors and organizations from all over Chicagoland were on hand to help the city spring into summer with the official season-changing signal – the turning on of Buckingham Fountain.

“Chicago is a city that loves its summers, and ComEd is proud to partner with the Chicago Park District to host this fun event at one of the city’s most treasured landmarks, the Buckingham Fountain,” said Fidel Marquez, ComEd senior vice president, Legislative and External Affairs. “At ComEd, we are focused on Powering Lives in the communities we serve through events that support education, the environment, arts and culture, and neighborhood development. We are delighted to jumpstart the switching on of summer with our fellow Chicagoians.”

Kozue Nitzschke from Northbrook, Il., switched on Buckingham Fountain Saturday in front of approximately 2,000 event attendees. Nitzschke was selected via a Facebook contest in which entrants were asked to post a photo or comment describing what Chicago summer means to them.

The event included free giveaways and free family activities, including safe telescope-viewing of the sun, the construction of luminous paper lanterns, aquatic-themed crafts, and interactive science experiments. Other highlights included a raffle for membership to Morton Arboretum and photos with the Field Museum mascot, SUE the T. rex.

Saturday’s event was hosted by Chicago TV news reporter, Ana Belaval. Special entertainment was provided by 7th Heaven, Soul Children’s Choir, and the Joffrey Ballet. Participating organizations included , Brookfield Zoo, Chicago Architecture Foundation, Chicago Botanic Garden, Chicago Children’s Museum, Field Museum, Lincoln Park Zoo, Morton Arboretum, Museum of Science & Industry, and .
