Apsell of PBS’ NOVA to be honored with Lifetime Achievement Award October 1st Award Presentation at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in NYC New York, N.Y. – July 26, 2018 (revised 9.30.18) – Nominations for the 39th Annual News and Documentary Emmy® Awards were announced today by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). The News & Documentary Emmy Awards will be presented on Monday, October 1st, 2018, at a ceremony at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in the Time Warner Complex at Columbus Circle in New York City. Fans come from all over to watcH their favorite teams compete and partake in a sport that has become more than just a game. Times reporter Bruce Rosenthal won the 2020 Gold Keyboard Award, the competition’s highest, for “Taken for a Ride,” an investigative series on corruption in the New York City taxi medallion business. As previously announced, NY Times Writers Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor will receive this year’s “Gabe Pressman Truth to Power Award” for their reporting on the Harvey Weinstein Case. The Gabe Pressman Truth to Power Award recognizes the club’s late president, friend and supporter who was a staunch supporter of the First Amendment. Other major award winners were Spectrum News NY1 for Spot News Reporting on a helicopter crash in Midtown Manhattan in June 2019 and WCBS Newsradio 880 for a shooting at a Kosher delicatessen in Jersey City in December 2019. The winners of the Mychal Judge Heart of New York Award were: Alex Vadukul for “Stories of New York” in The New York Times (newspaper); Sara Fishko, Olivia Briley, Bill Moss, Karen Frillmann of WNYC for “Wright and the Guggenheim” (radio); “Pizza-Spinning Chef Helps Others Get a Slice of the American Dream” by Matt Frucci, Jill Billante, George Itzhak, Mohammed Syed, Terry Tousey of NBC News/Nightly News with Lester Holt (TV) and “The Art of Surviving” from Elizabeth Van Brocklin of The Trace (online). In addition, Claudia Irizarry Aponte, who covers Brooklyn for THE CITY, was named the Nellie Bly Cub Reporter for 2020. -

Sadly, it is hardly a novel occurrence that the media fails to showcase professional older women in on-air positions, instead favoring younger women and men. The New York Times recently published an article titled “The Fight to Be a Middle-Aged Female News Anchor: Case 1:19-cv-05708 Document 1 Filed 06/19/19 Page 2 of 62 There is no fighting sexism on television without fighting age discrimination along with it,”1 which highlighted the experiences female television journalists have had to – and continue to – face in the workplace. -

Producing and Televising Immigrant Stories A Conversation with Marisa Venegas Interview by Carlos Jimenez and Bianka Ballina In March 2016, the University of California, Santa Barbara’s Carsey-Wolf Center and the Film and Media Studies department hosted a screening of the investigative television documentary Muriendo por Cruzar (Dying to Cross, 2014), co-produced by the Telemundo Network, The Weather Channel, and the Investigative Fund. This Emmy Award-winning documentary captures how increased border enforcement has affected immigration patterns, often forcing immigrants into inhospitable terrains to avoid U.S. Border Patrol checkpoints. In particular, the investigation centers on Brooks County, Texas, located 70 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico Border. With the establishment of one of these checkpoints near the town of Falfurrias in 1994, undocumented immigrants have been forced to walk for days through the most treacherous and isolated desert areas of Brooks County. Muriendo por Cruzar underscores the hostile physical and legal environment leading to the deaths of hundreds of Latin American immigrants. The Spanish-language documentary combines data gathered by multiple organizations in the area and interviews with Border Patrol officials, Brooks County residents, as well as immigrants and their families. The distress produced by graphic images of bodies found in the desert is compounded by the harrowing recordings of 911 calls by immigrants pleading for help, which quite often does not arrive. The documentary pays special attention to the traumatic experience of Sigfredo Palomo, who witnessed the death of his younger brother Jose Fernando Palomo as they both attempted to reach their sister in New York. -
