Journalism Awards Winners Press Release NEWS FROM THE NEW YORK PRESS CLUB www.nypressclub.org | @NYPressClub contact: Debra Caruso, DJC Commuications 212.971.9708 [email protected] Associated Press Wins New York Press Club's Premier Journalism Award Gold Keyboard Winner is Tops In Crowded Field The Associated Press investigative series “Death at Rikers Island” is the top prize winner in this year's New York Press Club Awards For Journalism. The series was one in a record-breaking overall turnout of entries spanning 26 categories of journalism. Nearly 500 entries were received this year from working journalists who gather and publish news on TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, newswires, and on the Internet. The AP’s Jake Pearson uncovered the deaths of two mentally ill inmates being held at the huge city jail as well as lapses in the treatment they received from city agencies and the jail’s health-care provider. “The Gold Keyboard is the New York Press Club’s highest award,” said NYPC president Larry Seary. “It is recognition for outstanding investigative reporting on a story that might not otherwise have been reported.” The award will be among those presented on June 8th at the Press Club's annual Awards and Installation of Officers Dinner at Manhattan's Water Club. Among other top winners in this year's competition is Jack Dickey of TIME who will receive the Nellie Bly Cub Reporter Award for a number of articles, including his 4,500 word cover story about Taylor Swift. Rev. Mychal Judge Heart of New York Awards for stories that are most complimentary of New York City will be presented in four categories. Newspaper: "Urban Gardner", The Wall Street Journal; Radio: "How Sweet It Is: Riding in The Candy Cab", WFUV-FM; TV: "How New York City Works", NY1 News; Internet: "Clown Care – When Laughter Heals", WomanAroundTown.com. News 12 TV news operations in the Bronx, Connecticut, Long Island, New Jersey and Westchester County came away with 10 awards. The Wall Street Journal followed closely with nine awards. Bloomberg properties and Newsday each received eight awards. ESPN properties and The Associated Press received seven citations. Times reporter Bruce Rosenthal won the 2020 Gold Keyboard Award, the competition’s highest, for “Taken for a Ride,” an investigative series on corruption in the New York City taxi medallion business.     Producing and Televising Immigrant Stories A Conversation with Marisa Venegas Interview by Carlos Jimenez and Bianka Ballina In March 2016, the University of California, Santa Barbara’s Carsey-Wolf Center and the Film and Media Studies department hosted a screening of the investigative television documentary Muriendo por Cruzar (Dying to Cross, 2014), co-produced by the Telemundo Network, The Weather Channel, and the Investigative Fund. This Emmy Award-winning documentary captures how increased border enforcement has affected immigration patterns, often forcing immigrants into inhospitable terrains to avoid U.S. Border Patrol checkpoints. In particular, the investigation centers on Brooks County, Texas, located 70 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico Border. With the establishment of one of these checkpoints near the town of Falfurrias in 1994, undocumented immigrants have been forced to walk for days through the most treacherous and isolated desert areas of Brooks County. Muriendo por Cruzar underscores the hostile physical and legal environment leading to the deaths of hundreds of Latin American immigrants. The Spanish-language documentary combines data gathered by multiple organizations in the area and interviews with Border Patrol officials, Brooks County residents, as well as immigrants and their families. The distress produced by graphic images of bodies found in the desert is compounded by the harrowing recordings of 911 calls by immigrants pleading for help, which quite often does not arrive. The documentary pays special attention to the traumatic experience of Sigfredo Palomo, who witnessed the death of his younger brother Jose Fernando Palomo as they both attempted to reach their sister in New York.
