Siren Song1 Reviewed by Taimur Rahman2 The title of this book is extremely misleading. This is not a book about siren songs. Or perhaps it is, but not in the way you think. The book draws you in, dressed as a biography of prominent Pakistani female singers. And then, you find yourself trapped into a complex discussion of post-colonial philosophy stretching across time (in terms of philosophy) and space (in terms of continents). Hence, any review of this book cannot be a simple retelling of its contents but begs the reader to engage in some seriously strenuous thinking. I begin my review, therefore, not with what is in, but with what is not in the book - the debate that shapes the book, and to which this book is a stimulating response.

The trip started with live music on the tour bus by the Faiz Ghar music class. On reaching the venue, the group found a quiet spot and spread their yoga mats to attend a vigorous yoga session conducted by Yogi Sham- shad Haider. By the time the session ended, the cold had disappeared, and many had taken o their woollies. The time was ripe for a fruit eating session. The more sporty among the group started playing football and frisbee. By this time the musicians had got their act together. The live music and dance session that followed became livelier when a large group of school girls and their teachers joined in. After a lot of food for the soul, the group was ready to attack Gogay kay Chaney, home made koftas, organic salads, and the most delicious rabri kheer. The group then took a tour of the jungle and the safari park. They enjoyed the wonderful ambience of the bamboo jungle, and the ostriches, deers, parakeet, swans, and many other wild animals and birds. • Shakir Ali, an Enigma Within a Layered Reality’
Pakistan Perspectives Vol. 22, No.2, July-December 2017 ‘Shakir Ali, an Enigma within a Layered Reality’ Iram Zia Raja* Abstract Shakir Ali was a man of multiple identities. As a teacher, the administrator of an art college and a prolific artist, in the beginning years of the newly founded post-colonial state of Pakistan, he enjoyed an almost mythical reputation among the many subsequent generations of art students and artists. This research paper delineates his path as an administrator/educator at the new art college, National College of Arts (NCA), while contextualizing it with his other identities. He was an artist, an occasional writer and had earlier taught at the Mayo School of Arts (MSA). A probe into the realm of art instruction in the early days of a post colony provides valuable insights into the socio-political and cultural contexts thereby facilitating the analysis of administrative constraints as well as instructional methodologies. The methodology adopted is that of qualitative research, structured and un-structured interviews with the first and second batch of students of newly founded NCA, triangulation being done through archival sources and published literary accounts. ______ Who is Shakir Ali? The question, who is Shakir Ali, should be intriguing for art circles in Pakistan. Shakir Ali was an important figure in different and diverse domains. Shakir Ali the painter was also a writer, art college administrator and art educator. There are many who know Shakir Ali: some personally in the capacity of students, colleagues, and friends, while others, as mere admirers and connoisseurs of his art works.

  • Daagh Dehlvi
Classic Poetry Series Daagh Dehlvi - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: PoemHunter.Com - The World's Poetry Archive Daagh Dehlvi (1831-1905) Nawab Mirza Khan (1831 - 1905), commonly known as Daagh Dehlvi was an outstanding Mughal poet famous for his Urdu ghazals and belonged to the Delhi school of Urdu poetry. He wrote poems and ghazals under the takhallus (Urdu word for nom de plume) 'Daagh Dehlvi' (the meanings of 'Daagh', an Urdu noun, include stain, grief and taint while 'Dehlvi' means belonging to or from Delhi). Life He lost his father at the age of six and was brought up by his stepfather, Mirza Muhammad Fakhroo, who was heir to Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal Emperor. On Fakhroo's death in 1865, Daagh left Delhi for Rampur where he went into government service and lived comfortably for 24 years. There followed a period of wandering and discomfort which ended when he was invited to Hyderabad in 1891. There he won his fame as an Urdu poet and lived a life of luxury. Hyderabad was a cradle to many poets of that period following the decline of Mughals in Delhi. He died in 1905 at the age of 74 in Hyderabad, India. Poetry Daagh had started reciting poetry at the age of ten. His forte was the ghazal. His poetry does not wallow in despair. The tone of his poems is rather exuberant. He was a self-acknowledged romantic but contrary to the impression one gets from his poetry, he eschewed wine. Usage of common words and phrases and thus simplicity was distinctive of his style.
