    The Chichester Festival Theatre productions YOUNG CHEKHOV Olivier Theatre Previews from 14 July, press day 3 August, booking until 3 September with further performances to be announced. The YOUNG CHEKHOV trilogy opened to overwhelming acclaim at Chichester Festival Theatre last year. The company now come to the National, offering a unique chance to explore the birth of a revolutionary dramatic voice. The production is directed by Jonathan Kent, with set designs by Tom Pye, costumes by Emma Ryott, lighting by Mark Henderson, music by Jonathan Dove, sound by Paul Groothuis and fight direction by Paul Benzing. Performed by one ensemble of actors, each play can be seen as a single performance over different days or as a thrilling all-day theatrical experience. Cast includes Emma Amos, Pip Carter, Anna Chancellor, Jonathan Coy, Mark Donald, Peter Egan, Col Farrell, Beverley Klein, Adrian Lukis, Des McAleer, James McArdle, Mark Penfold, Nina Sosanya, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Sarah Twomey, David Verrey, Olivia Vinall and Jade Williams. David Hare has written over thirty original plays, including The Power of Yes, Gethsemane, Stuff Happens, The Permanent Way (a co-production with Out of Joint), Amy’s View, Skylight, The Secret Rapture, The Absence of War, Murmuring Judges, Racing Demon, Pravda (written with Howard Brenton) and Plenty for the National Theatre. His other work includes South Downs (Chichester Festival Theatre and West End), The Judas Kiss (Hampstead and West End) and The Moderate Soprano (Hampstead). His adaptations include Behind the Beautiful Forevers and The House of Bernarda Alba at the NT, The Blue Room (Donmar and Broadway) and The Master Builder (The Old Vic).

The production has been embraced by the Christie family who continue to be involved with the running of Glyndebourne, 84 years after its launch. Executive Director Gus Christie attended the West End opening with his family and praised the portrayal of his grandfather John Christie who founded one of the most successful opera houses in the world. First seen in a sold out run at Hampstead Theatre in 2015, the new production opened in the West End this spring, with Roger Allam and Nancy Carroll reprising their original roles as Glyndebourne founder John Christie and soprano Audrey Mildmay.

David Hare’s critically acclaimed play The Moderate Soprano will make its West End premiere next spring at the Duke of York’s Theatre, with performances from 6 April to 30 June 2018 and opening night for press on 12 April 2018. Jeremy Herrin, whose celebrated production enjoyed a sold out run at Hampstead Theatre in 2015, will return to direct the play with brand new set and costume designs by the multi award-winning theatre and opera designer, Bob Crowley. Olivier Award winners Roger Allam and Nancy Carroll will reprise the roles of Glyndebourne founder John Christie and soprano Audrey Mildmay. The cast is completed by Paul Jesson as conductor Dr Fritz Busch, Anthony Calf as Professor Carl Ebert, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd as opera impresario Rudolf Bing and Jade Williams as maid Jane Smith.

    THE KING’S SOCIETY SUMMER TERM 2018 The King's Society Programme Summer 2018 cover.indd 1 13/03/2018 16:18:52 The King’s Society Summer Term 2018 The King’s Society aims to provide opportunities for the enhancement and enrichment of the King’s community. We hope to enable members of the Society to enjoy social events together and appreciate the educational and cultural facilities that the School, the Cathedral and Precincts have to offer. The Society has over 270 members. We are a non-profit making organisation existing solely for the benefit of our members. There is also a branch of The King’s Society in Hong Kong. We organise a variety of events in Canterbury, London and further afield. In conjunction with the Visitors’ Department of Canterbury Cathedral, many tours have been arranged within the Precincts. We have frequent theatre trips, visits to art galleries and guided walking tours in London. We enjoy our garden visits, with recent venues including Highgrove, Kew Gardens, Chartwell and the Chelsea Physic Garden amongst others. We hold regular lectures, craft and culinary workshops, wine tastings and dining evenings. We have enjoyed guided weekends away in Seville, Florence, Paris and Berlin, and we recently visited Bayeux and the D-Day Landing beaches in Normandy. In liaison with the PSHE Department we host talks, open to all King’s parents, on matters relating to teenage issues. Mrs Ali Huntrods, a former parent of two daughters at King’s, runs the Society together with a committee made up of current parents, OKS and members of staff.

Portland favorites Gretchen Corbett and Sharonlee McLean take the stage beginning May 4 to star in David Hare’s The Breath of Life , a two-woman play The Daily Telegraph called “bitingly funny.” When Francis Beale (McLean) decides she wants one last word with her ex- husband’s ex-lover (Corbett), both women are forced to confront their past, their failed relationships, dashed ideals and the lens through which they choose to view their futures. Ken Rus Schmoll (readings in six of the last ten JAW Festivals at The Armory, productions at Playwrights Horizons and New York Theatre Workshop) will direct. Corbett (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest , 2018 JAW Festival at The Armory) initially proposed this nuanced, character-driven play to Portland Center Stage at The Armory and did an early reading of the script with McLean ( The Receptionist and 25 others at The Armory). “It’s like doing Shakespeare, or Checkhov,” Corbett said of Hare’s script in a recent Artslandia interview. “He’s a spectacular writer, and that you get that opportunity to work with a really accomplished writer — as an actor — it’s such a privilege … He’s a funny, smart playwright.” “It’s hard,” McLean said of tackling this script.

In we continue to support fantastic programs on the global stage support of the Frankfurt Book Fair, we will be assembling events such as Reeperbahn in Germany, Printemps de Bourges in France, to promote Canadian talent at the Berlin Film Festival, Elbjazz, while developing new markets and genre opportunities with and in Hamburg and Munich. As well, we will be creating the Linecheck in Milan, Italy later this year and the Frankfurt Book Fair definitive music show for the Book Fair itself. These events will in Germany in 2020. be done with the support of the Canadian Embassy in Berlin, and the invaluable support of Sound Diplomacy in Germany. Through new CRTC mandates, we have received substantial increased funding for expanded video and other music programs. In the upcoming months we will be working with Manitoba By using new funds from that source and other radio CCD Music, developing and financing opportunities for Indigenous benefits, FACTOR has developed a new program for publishers and artists to showcase in Australia at Big Sound and in Germany expanded the available funding for songwriters’ workshops.
