A Word From Phil Murray

Can’t believe it is summer already! The big shoots are every weekend through September and we are sell- ing a lot of White Flyer Targets to Gun Clubs. Attendance at most of the State shoots has been up slightly and all this has benefitted from youth shooting. Whether it is 4H; AIM; SCTP or the State High School League among others, the influx of youth shooters and their families has had a profound effect on our shotgun . Whether it is their scores or buying habits, this segment has been a boost and shows no sign of letting up. Our sincere thanks to all the coaches and parents and the young people that participate, hopefully, many of these youngsters will be motivated to plan careers in the shooting sports. This new generation of shooters as a result of their participation, strengthen the second amendment plus show that the Shotgun shooting industry is a year round family sport that everyone can participate in. This issue we would like to introduce you to a remarkable young lady shooter from Oklahoma, Abigail Colten, whom which we met in 2018. As you read her article that we reprinted, I think you will be happy and proud to see that young people like this exist. Over the past year we have had the opportunity to stay in contact with Abigail and her parents and numerous times she has mentioned that she would like a future career in the shooting sports industry. Having graduated from High School recently and planning on attending college in the fall, Abigail said she would like to write some articles for the White Flyer Newsletter and write some shoot wrap up articles for shoots she attended – all for the stand point of a young shooter. Specifically, she wanted to gain experience and help the shooting sports. Well, her request was granted and you will notice in this summer news- letter a series of shoot wrap-up’s and photos that Abigail put together for some major shoots in the Midwest and Southwest. We hope that you will enjoy her perspective and different approaches in future issues. Abigail is one example of what these youth programs are developing and offering for the future. We at White Flyer are grateful and excited that we have the opportunity to meet folks like Abagail and her great family – the future of our shooting sports will be in good hands! Most importantly, the Annual Grand American Trapshoot in Sparta, Illinois will be upon us shortly. As we have done for numerous years, we will have our White Flyer Vendor Building at Sparta open during the entire Grand Trapshoot and hope that you will take a moment to stop by and visit. This year we will have a slew of new products for sale, including caps and shirts. As always, we will have that special commemorative Target for you to pick up. Last but not least, all of us on the White Flyer Team want to thank you, the gun club, the shooter and the customer for your support and business throughout the year. Without you folks, none of us would be needed and we sincerely appreciate all of you. Good Shooting and Safe Travels throughout the summer!

Jungman, Rhode Top Skeet Performers at Spring Selection Match COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (March 9, 2019)

The USA Shooting Spring Selection Match for Shotgun wrapped today at Tucson Trap and Skeet in Tucson, Arizona with the final day of competition and awards presented in the Skeet events.

The stakes were high for the nation’s top shotgun competitors as Pan American Games, International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship and World Cup selec- tion spots were up for grabs at this event. Competition included 250 targets of Qualification over four days, plus today’s Final where additional points were awarded based on finish (three for first, two for second and one for third place).

Phillip Jungman

Taking top honors in the men’s competition was Phillip Jungman (Caldwell, Texas/U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, pictured above) who overtook the Qualification lead after Day 3 and finished off Qualification with the top score of 243/250 targets. Jungman, who took silver at last year’s Spring Selection, finished the match with an overall score of 246 points, which included three points for his top finish in the Final. He also tied eventual silver medalist, reigning National Champion and his USAMU teammate Christian Elliott (Greenville, Indiana) in today’s Final with a score of 56/60 targets. Taking bronze was Robert Johnson (Phoenix, Arizona), who won the bronze medal by defeating Mark Staffen (Lewis Center, Ohio/USAMU) in a shootoff, 25-24 targets.

On the Junior side, Benjamin Keller (Johnstown, Colorado) was the top finisher, Alex Ahlin (Bamberg, South Carolina) took silver and Conner Prince (Burleson, Texas) took bronze.

Six-time Olympic medalist Kim Rhode (El Monte, California, pictured right) was the top finisher in the women’s competition. Rhode entered the Final with the top Qualification score of 241 targets. Once in the Final, she would tie two-time defending National Cham- pion and 2017 World Champion Dania Vizzi (Odessa, Florida) with 57/60 targets. Vizzi won the shootoff 4-3, to finish with an overall score of 240 points. Vizzi would once again go into a shootoff with Sam Simonton (Gainesville, Georgia), who also had 240 points, to determine silver and bronze medals. Vizzi would win this shootoff, 25-21 for the silver medal, leaving Simonton with the bronze.

Kim Rhode World Championship Junior bronze medalist Austen Smith (Keller, Texas) won the Junior Women’s competition by a dominating 10 points. 2017 Junior World Champion Katie Jacob (Rochester, Michigan) won silver and Jasmine Otis (Wasilla, Alaska) won bronze.

The ISSF World Cup season for shotgun kicks off March 17 in Acapulco, Mexico, though top finishers from this match were vying for spots at World Cups later in the season in Changwon, South Korea and Lathi, Finland. A top-two finish in Tucson went a long way toward qualifying an athlete for Pan American Games selection, which will take place July 26-August 11 in Lima, Peru. A top-three standing qualified athletes for the ISSF World Championship for Shotgun for both Open and Junior athletes, which will be contested June 30-July 11 in Lonato, Italy. The top-three Junior finishers are also eligible for the ISSF Junior World Cup, July 12-20 on Suhl, Germany. The Orange Crusher Page 7 Trap Mixed Team Browning/Burrows Wins Silver at World Cup COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (March 20, 2019)

The Trap Mixed Team of Kayle Browning (Wooster, Arkansas) and Brian Burrows (Fallbrook, California) won silver today at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Acapulco, Mexico. The duo set a Qualification World Record of 149 targets, with Browning shooting a personal best of 75/75 targets (in Trap Mixed Team, each athlete shoots 75 targets). Once in the Final, Browning/Burrows hit 43/50 targets to win the silver medal. The Australian team of Laetisha Scanlan/James Willett won the gold medal with 46 hits and the Great Britain team of Kristy Barr/Matthew John Coward-Holley won bronze with 34. “In the Final, we chose to put myself shooting first with all the men because nobody would expect that, and the guys would be rattled to not lose to a girl!” said Browning. “The lighting got rough towards the end and it was hard to see the targets, but we did our best and was able to come out with silver.” “I was fortunate to have a great partner for the Mixed Team event,” said Burrows. “This is my third final of three World Cups in Acapulco and second silver medal here. It’s safe to say I like Mexico.” Burrows won an individual Men's Trap silver medal in 2013. The other American team of Aeriel Skinner (Jackson, California) and 2008 Olympic gold medalist Glenn Eller (Katy, Texas/U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit) finished in 31st place with 140 targets. Rhode Wins World Cup Gold COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (March 24, 2019)

Kim Rhode claimed her 19th World Cup gold medal today in Women’s Skeet at the Interna- tional Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup for Shotgun in Acapulco, Mexico. Six-time Olympic medalist Rhode (El Monte, California) dominated the Final with 57/60 targets, just one short of the Finals World Record she set in April last year. She only dropped one target in her first 55 targets, but bested eventual silver medalist Chloe Tipple of New Zealand by nine targets. Donglian Zhang of China won the bronze medal. World Cups in Acapulco have been good to Rhode, as she also won gold at the World Cups here in 2017, 2015 and 2010. “I had an ‘old school power 50’going into the Final today,” Rhode said, hitting all 50 targets today in Qualification and entering the Final in third place with 121/125 targets over two days. “It was super hot and windy, but I was able to win the gold! It was awesome having Sam [Simonton] out there as she shot well and was a true champion powering through the flu.”

At just age 19, Simonton (Gainesville, Georgia) set a Qualification World Record and a Junior Qualification World Record with 123/125 targets. Simonton also hit all 50 targets today despite battling illness. Once in the Final, Simonton was eliminated in fifth place with 25 hits. 17-year-old Aus- ten Smith (Keller, Texas) just missed a potential Finals berth by one with 117 targets to finish in eighth place. Olympic quotas were available in this event; however, the U.S. had already won the maximum number of Olympic quotas in Women’s Skeet at the World Championship last summer in Changwon, South Korea. The Men’s Skeet competition saw their first 50 targets of Qualification today. Two-time Olympic gold medalist and reigning World Champion Vin- cent Hancock (Eatonton, Georgia) hit all 50 targets. Two-time Olympian Frank Thompson (Alliance, Nebraska) hit 46 targets and Elijah Ellis (College Station, Texas) hit 44. Competition concludes tomorrow with 75 more targets of Qualification in Men’s Skeet and then Finals. More than 350 athletes from 61 countries are competing at this World Cup.

Trap Athletes Earn World & Potential Pan Am Team Spots in Tucson COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (March 3, 2019)

A four-day battle for supremacy concluded Sunday at the USA Shooting Spring Selection at the Tucson Trap and Skeet Club in Tucson, Arizona. Top-two finishers in the Open division could get the chance to compete for Team USA at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Top-three Open and Junior Shooters will be headed to the Shotgun World Championships in Lonato, Italy.

There’s been seven domestic tests in shotgun since 2017, five of those times Ashley Carroll (Solvang, California) has proven to be the top stu- dent, including Sunday. It took all she had, however, with stiff challenges from both Kayle Browning (Wooster, Arkansas) and the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit’s (USAMU) Rachel Tozier (Liberty, Missiouri). After 250 Qualification targets, Carroll and Tozier were tied at 223, with Browning one back. In the 50-shot Final, Carroll and Browning tied at 44 targets apiece. Carroll would win the shoot-off and seal the match victory after Browning dropped the sixth target. The two Finals points Browning gained versus Tozier’s one Finals point meant those two would need another shoot-off to determine podium spots behind Carroll. Browning would edge Tozier, 23-21, in the 25-target shoot-off.

Top Junior in the women’s field was Faith Pendergrass (Valley Springs, California) who shot the high Qualification score of 214 and then finished second in the junior final. Carey Garrison (Crossville, Tennessee) fin- ished second while Nicole Manhave (Longview, Texas) was third. All three will represent Team USA at the World Championships as well as the Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany.

USAMU’s Derek Haldeman (Sunbury, Ohio) was the points leader from beginning to end, shooting so well his top spot on the podium was secure before entering the Final. He got that edge leaving no doubt Sunday by closing things out with a perfect 50/50 in Qualification. He had a five-point lead on second-place qualifier Brian Burrows (Fallbrook, California) and finished second in the Finals with a 42/50. Burrows would maintain his second-place position with a third-place finish in the Finals. Reigning National Champion Caleb Lindsey (Spring Hill, Tennessee) earned his interna- tional shooting opportunity by leap-frogging Derrick Mein (Paola, Kansas) with a strong Finals push that saw him come out on top.

Started by three-time Olympian and two-time Olympic bronze medalist Corey Cogdell-Unrein (Eagle River, Alaska), the great migration of Alaskan trap shooters is here and landing on the men’s junior podium was a pair of Anchorage natives with Steven Brown earning top honors and Grayson Davey sharing the podium with his friend as the bronze medalist. Sandwiched in the middle was Roe Reynolds (Quitman, Arkansas) who would go on to win the Final. All three will represent Team USA at the World Championships as well as the Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany.

Participation for the Pan Am Games is determined by whether or not Team USA still has Olympic quotas to obtain in that particular event. Earning top podium position in Tucson will be a key determining factor of team selection, but not the only criteria in place. Read the Pan Am Games Selec- tion Procedures

In the Senior rankings, Paul Mullen (Laurel, Maryland) earned the top spot with six-time Canadian Olympian Susan Nattrass, now living in Vashon, Washington, finishing second and Dave Senter (Saint Helens, Oregon) coming in third.

The Spring Selection Match continues Monday with competition in the Mixed Team Trap event followed by Men’s and Women’s Skeet beginning Wednesday. Look for the full Skeet preview Tuesday.

2019 NSCA U.S. Open

The 2019 NSCA U.S. Open was held at M&M Sporting Clays in Pennsville, NJ May 12-19. 1,197 shooters from thirteen countries and forty-seven states participated in the tournament. The tournament began on Sunday May 12th with FITASC in the pouring rain and similar weather contin- ued into Monday. Luckily the weather began to break up on Tuesday and other than a shower Wednesday morning the rest of the week was perfect! M&M made several major enhancements to the property since the 2018 Northeast Regional were it rained all week long. The car parking area across from the clubhouse was quadrupled in size along with the trailer parking area. M&M also added a road that connected the main event course so shooters were able to easily get from one event to the next around the property. The vendor area was enlarged and all on gravel or pavement so shoppers could easily drive their carts to all of the vendors. M&M expanded their clubhouse to include more bathrooms and a classroom, which many people used as sitting area throughout the week. M&M exclusively used White Flyer Sporting Clay Specials in All Orange, Orange Top, Orange Dome and All Black for their standard targets. White Flyer Sporting Clay specialties used were Orange Top and All Black Battues, Orange Top and All Black Pro 70mm, Orange and Green Rabbits, Orange Top and All Black Pitch 90mm Midis and All Orange Biodegradable 90mm Midis. Orange Top 110mm Internationals were also used to keep the shooters on their toes! As you can see by the list of targets used, nearly every imaginable target presentation was thrown! White Flyer is proud to announce that M&M experienced less than 1% breakage utilizing over 300 clay target throwers with over a million targets thrown! The “Rabbue” presentations were the most talked about targets of the week. A rabbue is a rabbit target thrown from a machine very similar to a standard machine but it is setup to accept rabbit targets. The rabbue is very deceiving and many shooters have a difficult time consistently breaking this presentation. Nearly every clay target throwing manufacturer now offers a rabbue machine and they are gaining popularity on the clays course, at least by the target setters! Congratulation to David Radulovich on his come from behind win to capture the 2019 U.S. Open title! David had the highest score on the Laporte course with a 66/68, second highest score on the Beretta with a 63/66 (64 was the highest) followed by the Fiocchi with a 60/66 (64 was the highest). The three main event courses were never ran but appeared that someone could do it. Anthony Matarese Jr. set the Beretta and Fiocchi courses and guest target setter, Joe Scull from Cedar Creek Sporting Clays set the Laporte course. All three course were challenging with several specialty targets on each course including stations with two shot singles that were similar to long FITASC presentations! Whether you shoot every tournament that M&M offers or it was your first time there, shooters of all skill levels were challenged and entertained with U.S. Open worthy presentations! White Flyer was the proud sponsor of the White Flyer All-Around Championship which included the Main Event, FITASC, 5-Stand and Super Sporting, totaling 500 targets! White Flyer Pro Staff, Zach Kienbaum topped the field with a 473/500, three targets ahead of White Flyer Pro Staff, Derrick Mein. Our mission with the All-Around Championship is to promote participation in all NSCA registered disciplines while giving shoot- ers another event to participate in at zero cost to the shooter. White Flyer is proud to offer the All-Around at all of the NSCA Regional Champion- ships, World English and the National Championship.

Special thanks to the Matarese Family and staff for hosting a world class event!

The nostal- gia shoot with vintage guns and the 27 yard line doubles were really fun events that everyone enjoyed! I look forward to participate in fun games like that again next year. One of the most unique things about this shoot was their background and wildlife. The stationary background filled with beautiful mountains and varying hori- zon lines make it a fun challenge. Deer, elk, and antelope grazing in the distance add to the wonderful location. Saturday night’s steak dinner, live music, and awards ceremony was really fun. The traveling trophies for New Mexico’s gun clubs to compete for at the state shoot is a genius idea and I think more states should do some- thing similar. While there I made new friends as well as getting to visit with old ones. There were not as many youth participants there this year, but the ones that did attend competed very well and put up good scores. Everyone was so supportive of each other, complimentary, and has an overall happy disposition.

Utah State Sporting Clays

The 2019 Utah State Sporting Clays shoot was hosted by the newly renovated and managed Wasatch Wing and Clay. The club is located just southwest of Salt Lake City in Cedar Fort, UT. The sporting clays course is only part of the 7000 acre property. The countryside is dedicated solely to pheasant habitat and shotgunners. In the center of the expansive property is a log cabin style clubhouse, trap and skeet line, 5-stand and sporting clays course. All run with new machinery. The shoot offered FITASC, 5-Stand, Super Sporting, Sub Gauge, Side X Side, Pump Gun, Preliminary and Main Events. The expert target setting lent itself to good scores and an enjoyable week. Tyler Taylor won the main event with a 95/97 score of 192. He also ran the 50 bird FITASC and the Super Sporting! Scott Ramsden had a great preliminary event winning with the sole 97. His shooting partner Matt Coffin also bested the other Master shoot- ers with a 95. Curtis Lessel shot a 97 in the main 5-stand to take the win. The shoot management brought in a team to make their first shoot memorable. Bud Heaton as many of you know is a champion shooter, mental and life coach and he jumped right in to help relaunch the club. Jon Kruger lead the team of target setters with well thought out presentations that were both enjoyable and challenging. The setting complimented the landscape and often mirrored the property’s bird hunting scenarios. CH Shoot Results worked with the club staff on registration and scores. They made room for the vendors right around the incredible clubhouse and trap line. The club also brought in a great group of trappers and loaders. I can’t say enough about the managing family. They were very accommodating and hospitable. Scores can be found at the following website https://www.utahstateshoot.com/2019.

The concession was quality, the people were happy to serve, and they did an excel- lent job keeping up with everyone’s orders. Very thankful to have food and drinks available all day! There was approximately 80 new ATA members due to the youth competition held during the state shoot this year. They’re so blessed to have such enthusiastic, diligent, youth that are eager to participate in every way. This year, Kansas had 537 total shooters. 218 of these shooters were non resident participants from seventeen different states. Being an out of state participant myself, Kansas is one of my favorite places to shoot outside of my home state. I look forward to shooting there throughout the year. Their people are friendly, passionate about their events, and are more than willing to make sure you have a good experience.
