The IRS has identified $6.5 billion in ID-related tax refund fraud last year, but does not know how much was going undetected.

Story by M. E. Ford of The Florida Star A rally was held in Jacksonville Saturday, March 24th. More than 1,000 people gathered. At the rally, a video was shown of Zimmerman entering the jail house escort- ed by police on the night of the shooting. The video shows no signs of Zimmerman being in a scuffle with Trayvon Martin on the night he was killed. There were no scars or signs of blood on Zimmerman’s face or clothes. If Zimmerman’s nose was broken and if Trayvon had beat him in his face as he claimed, the video would have shown some sign of bruising even if he was seen first by paramedics. It’s sad with everything that has happened, we still can not call this a case, because Zimmerman is still a free man. So, until he comes out of hiding, we need to understand that we need to keep our money in our pockets and stop trying to show our support by buying items pertain- ing to this incident. It only makes others that do not have anything to do with this richer. Invest in the future by supporting President Obama for the next presidency.

TYRESE PERFORMS AT THE FLORIDA THEATER

Story by Sandy Neal, Freelance Writer/Photographer for The Florida Star R&B Singer, Actor, Author and former Model, Tyrese (A.K.A Jodi) was at the Florida Theater Sunday Night for an awe- some performance with opening acts Aaron Bing (Saxophonist), Odd Rod (Poet), Tony D (Comedian) and Leon Timbo (The latest artist signed to Tyrese’s Label and he is from Jacksonville). DJ PLO was on the turntables for the pre and intermission jams with Jean.com as the host. Aaron Bing mesmerized the women with his saxophone as he walked the aisles and gave some of the women one on one atten- tion with his Sax, of course. Odd Rod had the crowd on their feet as he flowed effortlessly through the words of his poems; he is also a local talent. Tony D had the crowd laughing to his jokes. Leon Timbo was definitely an added bonus to the show, he is very talented with his guitar. Tyrese has grown as a singer and actor among his many other achievements since he sang on the back of a city bus in a 1994 Coca Cola commercial. He has starred in such movies as Fast Five, Transformers (Dark of the Moon), Waist Deep and America’s favorite, his betrayal of Jodi in Baby Boy just to name a few. He sang many of the crowd favorites such as; How You Saxophonist Aaron Bing Gonna Act Like That, Lately, What Am I Gonna Do, and Sweet Lady.

By Marsha Dean Phelts, Reporter/Photographer of The Florida Star The serendipitous circumstances that led to the marriage of Jacqueline Wells and Kenneth Burrough began a long, long, very long time ago with the opening of a school, initially called School No. 165. Back in the day, schools were numbered in chronologi- cal order with codes that told you whether it was a white school or a black school. Black schools were assigned numerical orders in the 100s. White schools were assigned num- bers from 0-99 and in the 200s. The year that the new school opened both Jackie and Ken were well established in positions of student leadership at different segregated schools on the north side. Each expected that they, like their siblings before them would graduate from Stanton, School No. 153 and Northwestern High School, No. 155. This was in 1964 and the landmark Civil Rights Act outlawing major forms of discrimination against African Americans and women, including racial segregation in schools, at the workplace and by facilities that served the general public had just been passed. Jacquelyn and Kenneth Burrough, Married March 11, 2012 The time for integration had come so in 1964, the Duval County School Board made Top right: Ken Burrough and Jacqueline Wells May 28, 1965 at their Junior Senior Prom their plans for sending African American students to , No. 96, but first year at William M. Raines the then all-white faculty and students rejected the idea. That’s when the school board then decided to build a new 2 million dollars facility for the overcrowded Black north side high schools. School No. 165 opened its doors at 3663 Clarkson Avenue on January 25, 1965. At the end of the 1965 spring semester the school was renamed William Marion Raines Senior High School, No. 165. When Raines opened, neither Jackie nor Ken knew the other. Jackie the baby in her family had become a star athlete in basketball, softball and soccer at Stanton while Ken, the youngest in his family was a 4-letter football, basketball and track jock at Northwestern. Faculty and staff were handpicked for this model School No. 165. Ms. Sallye Daniels, girl’s athletic director at Stanton High School would set up the girls’ sports pro- gram at the new school. When Coach Daniels left Stanton, varsity members of her team went in a tail spin and either their families moved or they moved in with relatives who lived in the boundaries of School No. 165. MARCH 31, 2012 THE STAR GEORGIA LOCAL SECTION - B All Hail Queen Quet As We Honor Rev. Tunis Campbell: Gullah Geechees Celebrate Heritage and Culture In Brunswick

What started off as a group of proud Americans celebrating their African heritage in south Georgia is now a four day event in Brunswick, complete with a parade, banquet, awards ceremony and even a visit from a cultural queen. The proud local diaspora of the Gullah Geechees were in town last week with a whole lot to celebrate in their four day event. “We are so excited to be celebrating what would have been the 200th birthday of Rev. Tunis Campbell,” beamed Rev. Zack Lyde, a part of the council of Gullah Geechees. “Each year we celebrate Tunis Campbell’s birthday and this year we decided to go a step further by taking it to another level. We will be having educational classes on the nation, parades, a reception, church service and of course our banquet we expect to be extraordinary. The reason we are doing this is so that our younger generations can be educated and be proud of their heritage and who they are.” “We are truly proud to have Queen Quet,” added Rev. Lyde. “She is national and international representative and under our guidance has become by far one of the most educated persons on the subject of Gullah Geechee nation. She is by far one of the most intelligent ladies to represent us.” Among the out of town attendee’s who planned to take part in the festivities is Rev. Kenneth Glasgow, brother of Rev. Al Sharpton. The group also honored outstand- ing contributors to society including members of the clergy, politicians, teachers and oth- ers. Also being recognized was Alexandra James, who was wrongfully jailed at age 13. “Rev. Tunis Campbell is one of the most important figures of our culture,” said Rev. Lyde. “Post Civil War, he the man behind what W.E.B. DeBois described as ‘the splendid reconstruction of Georgia being the splendid failure’. Tunis Campbell was a free man who bought 1,264 acres of land in McIntosh County and trained blacks to be self-dependent so they wouldn’t have to rely on their former masters since slavery was abolished. He was a Justice of the Peace, and in 1866 was in the State Senate. Tunis Campbell knew that we as a people had to be isolated in order to make the transition. He knew that the former plantation owners would attempt to influence the federal govern- ment and make things more difficult in the new thriving community he was creating.” According to Rev. Lyde, the islands of Delaware, Ossbo, St. Catherine’s, Sapelo and Cumberland were a hot bed for progress of former slaves who made great strides under the guidance of Rev. Campbell. “At one point, St. Catherine’s island was a model for other free people,” noted Rev. Lyde. “Rev. Campbell was the Governor and he had an army, a senate and a judi- cial system. At one point it was said that no buckhroo [European] could set foot on the island.” Through such events. the legend and legacy of the Rev. Tunis Campbell and the nation will undoubtedly remain alive.
