Volume 8, Issue 2 PREFECT’S MESSAGE Fall 2018

Newsletter No. 19

Dear Sister Sodalists, Fall 2018 On October 6, 2018, the Archdiocese of Washington Sodality Union commemorated its 100th anniversary with a Mass at the John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, DC. The Mass was celebrated by Washington Auxiliary Bishop Roy Campbell, Jr. Afterwards, they had a luncheon and an awards ceremony at the Washington Navy Yard. The Sodality Union presented the St. Anthony of Padua Sodality with a Certificate of Appreciation in

Recognition of Continuing Devotions to Our Blessed Mother throughout these 100 Years (1918-2018) and for being one of the oldest Sodalities in the Archdiocese of Washington Sodality Union. Our Sodality started its Sodality business year in October with the Chemo Comfy Bags Project for cancer patients of the Providence Hospital Oncology Unit. This was our third year donating the Chemo Comfy Bags, and as usual the Oncology Unit patients were very appreciative to receive them. In November, we delivered non-perishable goods and made a financial donation to So Others Might Eat (SOME), an interfaith community-based organization that helps to provide food, clothing, and healthcare to the poor and homeless in our nation’s capital. Through Mary our Blessed Virgin, we will conquer and thrive in all of our Christian endeavors. As we continue this year, let us remember our purpose of being Christ-like in our words, thoughts, and deeds as Sodalists. Remember, “ always gives His best to those who leave the choice with him,” by Jim Elliot. Pat Smith, Prefect

Newsletter No. 19 BREAST CANCER AWARENESS — OCTOBER 2018

The Fall season is noted for its changing colors. The leaves in the trees turn from green to red, gold, and brown. In October, the color also turns to pink in commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This time of the year brings awareness to the disease, and spotlights those who have been diagnosed with the disease, the survivors. For those who have been diagnosed, and are undergoing treatment, this can be a difficult time. Not only do they have to deal with this disturbing medical diagnosis, but they must now endure medical treatments that could have overwhelming side effects. The ladies of Saint Anthony of Padua started a project that will hopefully help a survivor endure the circumstances of the disease, and provide some cheer to lift her spirits while undergoing treatment.

Welcome the Chemo Comfy Bag. The bags were introduced as a project by our Prefect, Patricia Smith. The bags are white with the pink breast cancer ribbon logo. They are filled with toiletries, comfy socks to keep her feet warm, a throw to add warmth and comfort (remember your favorite blankie when you were little), writing pad and a pen to note or journal thoughts, and a card with a personal note written by each sodalist.

Special Special Feature On Monday, October 8, Columbus Day, Patricia Smith, Paulette Grady, Alberta Merriwether,

Sodality Sodality Newsletter Katherine Jiles, and Sally King delivered 20 bags to the Providence Hospital Infusion Center. Fredrecker P. Adams, MSN, RN and Manager of Nursing Business Operations, Nursing Administration, Providence Hospital and her staff were grateful to receive the bags. Before leaving,

Practice Jesus

If we practised Jesus every way, It’d be like Christmas every day; If we, like Him, were meek and mild And loved each woman, man, and child,

If we’d read our Bible, it’d remind us, So that every single day would find us More and more in sweet accord With our sweet Jesus–Master, Lord.

Then every day that we’re alive Would be like December 25.

Jesus Is The Reason

In Bethlehem, God gave to us The source of Christmas joy; A star shown on a miracle: The virgin birth of a boy.

He was born both God and man, A Savior for us all, The way to get to our heavenly home, If we just heed His call.

So as we shop and spend and wrap And enjoy the Christmas season, Let’s keep in mind the sacred truth: Jesus is the reason.
