CARPENTER Museum of Comparative ZoSlogy, Harvard University During the three years subsequent to the publication of my revision of the Nearetie Meeoptera *, a number of new and interesting species have come to my attention. Some of these were taken by me in the central and western states, but by far the majority were received from other entomolo- gists, as follows: Mr. E. S. Thomas, Ohio State Museum; Mr. C. A. Frost, Framingham, Mass. Dr. C. 13. Philip, Hamil- ton, Montana;Dr. H. B. Mills, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming; Mr. E. P. Van Duzee, California Academy of Sciences; Mr. L. C. Lloyd, Seattle, Washington; Dr. H. H. Ross, Illinois State Museum, Urbana, Illinois; Dr. Hugo Kahl, Carnegie Museum, Pittsburg; and Dr. C. E. Miekel, University of Minnesota. To all these I am grateful for their eo6peration. In the present paper I have included the most interesting of the new locality records and descriptions of eight new spe- eies. Including the latter, the total number of Nearetie species is sixty-four. Family Panorpidm Brachypanorp montana Carp. Bull. Mus. Comp. ZoSl., 72 (6) 212; 1931. Four males were taken among pines at Crater Lake, Ore- gon, July 16, 1932, at an altitude of about 8,000 feet (F. M. Carpenter). As far as I am aware, these are the only speci- mens in addition to the types which have been collected. No females were found in spite of careful searching. Panorpa lugubris Swederus Kgl. Lattin Caurinus dectes Russell is a minute, brachypterous scorpionfly which was discovered at Marys Peak, Benton County, Oregon, in 1976, and subsequently described as the only representative of the subfamily Caurininae within the Boreidae (snow scorpionflies). Caurinus dectes is now known to range from the Olympic Peninsula and Northern Cascades in Washington, to northern Lane County, Oregon. The habitats of C. dectes include moist, forested sites with both coniferous and deciduous canopies. Larvae and adults have been found in bryophytes occurring as epiphytes, or on logs and stumps, and in terrestrial stands of mosses and liverworts. Feeding studies showed that both adults and larvae of Caurinus are specialized feeders on leafy liverworts (Jungermanniales). Twenty-five species of Jungermanniales in 15 genera were highly acceptable to adults, while 11 species in 10 genera were accepted slightly, if at all. Adults of C. dectes fed to some degree on two of four genera of the thalloid Metzgeriales, while liverworts of the Marchantiales and Anthocerotae were not accepted at all. Larval feeding preferences paralleled those of adults. The eggs of C. dectes are glued to the leaves of the host liverworts. Eggs hatch in spring, but some eggs may remain in diapause for a year or more. Larval feeding is within the shoot tissues, and is completed within 2 to 3 months of eclosion. -

THE INFLUENCE OF VICARIANCE AND DISPERSAL ON THE DIVERSIFICATION AND EVOLUTION OF SPRINGTAILS (COLLEMBOLA) BY ARON D. Whitfield ABSTRACT Vicariance and dispersal are major drivers of the evolution of biodiversity, yet the relative impact of these processes, and the factors that influence them, often remain elusive. Identifying and understanding evolutionary processes responsible for generating diversity is essential for understanding ecological patterns and for the development and implementation of management strategies intended to conserve biodiversity. My dissertation research is focused on the historical, ecological and evolutionary underpinnings driving the origin, diversification, and maintenance of biodiversity in springtails (Collembola). This class of tiny, wingless insect-like hexapods includes some of the most abundant (and perhaps, most diverse) arthropods on earth. They have colonized, diversified, and adapted to nearly every terrestrial habitat from marine intertidal zones and tropical rainforests to polar deserts and caves, yet the evolutionary mechanisms behind their ecological success are poorly understood. Ecological specialization is a central theme in my first two chapters. Species with obligate ecological associations offer simple systems to evaluate biogeographical hypotheses and also provide an ecological context to test the effects and consequences of specialization on patterns of diversity. In Chapter 1, I identify and compare spatial and temporal patterns of molecular diversity for two ecologically distinct and codistributed genera of cavernicolous springtails (cave-obligate vs. -

Checklist of the Millipeds of North and Middle America 3
Introduction Wenn sich die Weisen nicht zuweilen verirteten, so m ssten alle Narren versagen. .Johann Wolfgang von Goethe I may freely, without shame, leave some obscurities to happier industry, or future information. .Samuel Johnson Checklists and catalogues are regarded with disdain by some biologists who consider them mere hackwork, compiled from literature and devoid of phylogenetic insights. Systematists who are actually involved in transferring knowledge about the characteristics, relationships, and distribution of poorly-known organisms from the alpha to gamma level (thus making it accessible to theoreticians) tend to be more generous. There are no references more fundamental than comprehensive summaries of current knowledge, and the efforts of assembling and organizing information from a vast polyglot literature into a compact and manageable form are highly appreciated by subsequent users. A checklist or catalog is often the catalyst that initiates or stimulates active interest in some neglected taxon, and whether one concurs with the details of presentation is immaterial so long as all the facts are available. It is often overlooked that the basic purpose of such compendia is to facilitate their own obsolescence. An increasing interest in tropical biotas during the past several decades allows a guarded hope that the importance of millipeds in such ecosystems will be recognized and investigated. Although three annotated checklists have been published (West Indies: Chamberlin, 1918; North America: Chamberlin & Hoffman, 1958, and Middle America: Loomis, 1968 respectively), they are now obsolete and inadequate. As the faunas of these regions are now amenable to a revised treatment, this occasion is taken to provide a comprehensive, updated, summary of the diplopod fauna of the entire area north of the South American mainland.
