    — 92 — LE VAL DE DERBORENCE Ignace Mariétan Introduction L'intérêt du Val de Derborence pour les personnes ignorantes des sciences de la nature est assez restreint. Paysage étrange fermé par cette ceinture colossale de rochers, encombré par ces amoncellements de blocs qui recouvrent tout le fond du cirque. Des pierres, et encore des pierres partout, trop même, trop de nature sauvage et pour certaines personnes, manque de vues lointaines. On voudrait plus de nature travaillée et habitée par les hommes, un paysage plus humain. Il y en a cependant: les mayens de La Derboreintze, de La Comba, de La Tour, de La Lui, et surtout ceux de Montbas. Ce sont des îlots de vie humaine qui se réveillent pendant quelques semaines en juin et au début d'octobre, et s'endorment en dehors de ces périodes. Une telle appréciation de ce paysage a été bien résumée par un visiteur, homme de culture théolo­ gique et littéraire, mais non scientifique: « Je voudrais bien faire un séjour à Derborence, mais pas pour longtemps. » Pour les hommes de sciences, les naturalistes et les vrais amis de la nature, qui aiment à se poser des problèmes et à en rechercher les solutions, Derborence est d'une richesse incomparable. Je voudrais en évoquer quelques-uns, pris dans les domaines les plus divers, afin de les aider à mieux aimer et à plus intelligemment comprendre ce paysage si particulier. Ils viennent nombreux depuis que la nouvelle route en rend l'accès facile, ils ne manqueront pas de se multiplier encore dans l'avenir. D'aucuns y ont déjà construit des chalets de vacances; la com­ mune de Conthey a reçu une vingtaine de demandes de constructions en 1960.
