Commended Students in the 2015 Merit Program

The principal, John House-Myers, of Bow High School announced today that Nicholas Benoit and Anna Morrison have been named Commended Students in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 Merit Program by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

A spokesperson for National Merit Scholarship Corporation commented, “The young men and women named Com- mended Students have demonstrated outstanding academic potential by their performance in the very competitive Merit Program. In a nation that values excellence, it is important to publicly recognize the attainments of scholas- tically talented young people and the schools that nurture their development. We hope this recognition will help broaden the educational opportunities of Commended Students and serve as encouragement to all students to devel- op their abilities to the fullest.”

We are moving toward creating a learning commons to adapt to the changing needs of learners. This report will outline what has been done so far as part of a 3-year-plan. The Tutorial Room has now become the collaboration lab: 4 tables, 4 monitors, smart board for classes and groups. The Reading Room is being used for NHS tutoring and scheduled each period for students needing help and has been renamed Study Lab. Comfortable seating has been placed next to the periodicals for reading Quiet spaces may be created when needed Non-fiction is being carefully reviewed and moved to classrooms (or other) as we are moving toward 21st Century learning experiences by using eBooks We are working on making special collections to get the attention of students. For example, graphic novels, ca- reers, sports and other interests placed in groupings making it easy for students to browse Printing has been consolidated in one area: both color and black and white A charging station has been placed at the circulation desk for those needing to charge phones and tablets (“Juice Bar”) All library materials are checked out at the circulation desk. Laptop loaners may be used in the learning commons/ library and must be signed out and returned at the end of the period. Our webpage: www.bhs.bownet.libguides.com/hello, contains the online catalog, new acquisitions, including books, eBooks, and movies. This is available 24/7. Equipment to loan include: iPods, Kindles, Nooks, cameras and recording devices. We will provide instruction on the use of these. The iPods are used for students wishing to listen to books, both for enjoyment and classroom assignments. The FIRST WIST Forum, offered since 2000 to more than 250 attendees every other year, has proven to be a very effective day and networking opportunity for high school girls to learn more about careers in science and technology directly from successful women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields.

Following the keynote(s), panelists from a wide variety of science, technology, engineering and math fields will give presentations and reflect on their education, careers, field, choices, work history, and what a high school student needs to know today for a rewarding future career in science and technology.

Details The Forum runs from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M. Breakfast and lunch are included The fee is $10 per student and $20 per adult chaperone (teachers, parents, other mentors).

Workshops include: Planning For College* During the Planning for College session, you will learn which classes you need to take in high school in order to

6 reach your college and career goals, learn about the college application process, learn what activities you might par- ticipate in to enhance your high school experience, and gather resources that will help you plan for college.

College Session In the college sessions, you will discover the differences between studying science, technology, and engineering at a technical school versus a liberal arts school, and you will have the opportunity to hear from current college students about the choices they made and learn about majors that might interest you. We’ll show you why choosing a major doesn’t mean you are locked in for life, and we’ll share volunteer opportunities that might help you make valuable career decisions.

Career Sessions Throughout the day, our career speakers will share their personal stories and their creative ways of using science, technology, engineering, and math and the choices they made in their careers and everyday lives.

Venturing Crew - Marcel Duhaime: Meet Mondays during break in Room 2214. Lots accom- plished in our short meetings!! Venturing is a combination of an outing club and environmental service club. We plan on doing one weekend activity each month.

SALC Student Athletic Leadership Council - Jim Kaufman: Student driven organization with a mission to promote school spirit, further sportsmanship and develop their own leadership skills. This past spring Salc student-athletes ran a field day for all Bow Memorial and Dunbarton 6th graders. Salc has also purchased the banners that adorn the Falcon Way light poles. Once each month a speaker on leadership is invited to address the group.

Athletics Program Bow High School has a variety of sports.
