ROB RANDALL Randall was a logical choice to replace Nelson as coach since he played at Nazareth in 1987 and was an assistant coach for three Head Coach seasons in the 1990s. Nazareth won at Middlebury, 12-8, snapping the Panthers’ 45- game home-field winning streak and earning the Golden Flyers a trip to Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium to meet Salisbury in the national championship game. Nazareth’s season ended there with a 13-9 loss. In 2005, the Golden Flyers also seemed to peak at playoff time following tough regular-season losses to RIT and Ithaca. Nazareth was forced to go on the road for the Empire 8 Tournament and the Golden Flyers secured the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament with decisive wins at Ithaca, 14-4, and at COACH ROB RANDALL Hartwick, 18-7. NAZARETH LACROSSE 2006 Golden Flyers win ECAC title
From a win-loss standpoint, the 2006 men’s lacrosse season at Nazareth ended exactly the way head coach Rob Randall had envisioned -- with a win. The Golden Flyers scored a convincing 17-10 victory over Ithaca May 14 to win the ECAC Upstate title to put the finishing touches on a 12-4 season -- their 18th double-digit win total in 21 seasons. As satisfying as it was for the Golden Flyers to win that championship, the team’s enthusiasm was tempered a bit by their exclusion from the NCAA Division III Tournament, something of a post-season measuring stick at East Avenue. “It’s always nice to finish the season with a win because not too many teams get to do that,” said Randall, who has a record of 78-20 in six seasons at Nazareth. “We wanted to be in the NCAA Tournament, but (winning the ECACs) is a testament to these guys who continued to play lacrosse at a high level until the end.” Attackman Ryan Hotaling had a career-best nine points on three goals and six assists and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Hotaling and teammate Chris Balash (5 goals) each scored their 100th career goal in the victory, a milestone that midfielder Bryan BRYAN ADAMS Adams reached in a 15-5 semifinal victory over Oneonta. Midfielder Bryan Adams earned All-America honors for the The Golden Flyers have appeared in the NCAA Tournament 16 times third year in a row. since first appearing on the scene in 1986, but missed out in '06 after losing to RIT, 18-13, in the semifinals of the Empire 8 Conference Tournament. Nazareth wound up third in the Empire 8’s regular-season standings after tough one-goal losses to RIT and Ithaca, the latter defeat coming in a school record four overtimes. “I’m not unhappy with the way we played,” said Randall. “We had chances to win every game we played, but it just didn’t work out.” Hotaling led the Golden Flyers in scoring for the second year in a row with 74 points on 37 goals and 37 assists. Senior attackman Greg Kanellis was next with 25 goals and 20 assists for 45 points, following by Adams with 28 goals and 15 assists for 43 points. Hotaling and Adams repeated as first-team Empire 8 Conference all- stars and were joined on the first team by longstick midfielder Jeff Mangini and close defenseman Francis Donald. Second-team honors were awarded to Kanellis, midfielder Chad Amidon and defenseman Ryan Conley. Balash and goalie Pat Mullin were honorable mention choices. Adams and Hotaling were selected as third-team All-Americans, while JEFF MANGINI Mangini was an honorable mention choice.
