SPRAGUE HIGH SCHOOL HOME OF THE OLYMPIANS ATHLETICS

ATHLETICS & ACTIVITIES Salem-Keizer Public Schools has officially submitted and met requirements for opting-in to allow outdoor contact sports beginning Monday, February 22. Sports permitted to begin include full-contact football, cross country and soccer. Volleyball is expected to be able to resume indoor practices soon if COVID-19 rates continue to decline. Traditional spring sports are tentatively scheduled to begin April 5 and traditional winter sports May 10. Full-contact sports were prohibited until recently, when Governor Kate Brown announced on February 10 that the Oregon Health Authority’s guidance for outdoor sports had been revised. “School sports play an important role in fostering students’ mental, emotional and physical health,” Governor Brown noted. “We will proceed with caution, to ensure that teams are following health and safety precautions to protect our athletes, their families, and their communities.” The updated guidance allows high school teams to practice and compete, provided that health and safety protocols are put into place. Because Marion County is in the COVID-19 Extreme Risk category, the protocols include on-site testing for COVID-19, developed plans for contact tracing, isolation and quarantining, a waiver identifying health and safety risks, and not allowing onsite spectators.

View the district’s official ODE opt-in form for outdoor contact sports.

While the overall success of high school sports this year is dependent upon everyone doing their part to limit the transmission of COVID-19 in our community, SKPS is confident in the health measures in place and pleased to offer this opportunity to our student-athletes. The expansion of high school sports is yet another step towards returning to familiar routines and activities that keep students connected and engaged in school. Go Olys! HOME OF THE OLYMPIANS SPRAGUE HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS THE OSAA DOES HAVE MINIMUM ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION. As students begin the 2020-21 school year, it’s important that our students who plan to participate in Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) sports and/or activities are aware of, and follow requirements for eligibility. ACADEMIC ELIGILIBILITY SKPS students must meet ALL of the following minimum OSAA academic requirements: • Enrollment: Students must be enrolled in at least 1.5 credits (three of four classes) during the quarterly grading period of the season they wish to participate. AND • Credits Earned: Previous Grading Period Students must have earned (passed), at least 1.5 credits during the previous transcript quarter. AND • On-track to Graduate Upon entering the 2020-21 school year, students need to have earned at least: • Sophomores (Grade 10): 4.5 credits • Juniors (Grade 11): 10 credits • Seniors (Grade 12): 17.5 credits These requirements are in place for all SKPS students, including students participating in the EDGE Online Program who plan to participate in sports or activities with their home school. All students who wish to participate in any OSAA sports must have a current OSAA sports physical on file with their school, which must remain current throughout the entire participation season . OSAA sports physical forms can be found on the OSAA website. If you are not sure if you or your child will meet any of these OSAA eligibility requirements, please contact the Athletic Director at your home school. If you feel that although you do not meet any of the above requirements, participation eligibility should be granted due to individual circumstances, there is an OSAA eligibility appeal process that your Athletic/Activities Director can assist you with.

SPRAGUE HIGH SCHOOL HOME OF THE OLYMPIANS HONORING OUR ORCHESTRA SENIORS

AIMEE BALDWIN CELLO Aimee has enjoyed her time in Camerata and ASO since her sophomore year. Her future plans are to attend college and pursue a science degree. Her dream is to become a pathologist or paleontologist. She was accepted into the Salem-Keizer All-City group for 2020 and the All Northwest 2021 Orchestra which is a great honor since it is made up of the best musicians from Oregon, Washington, , Wyoming, Alaska and Montana. Aimee’s favorite orchestra memory was performing Autumn from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with Camerata and Peter Frajola and then watching the Oregon Symphony in concert afterwards. A fun fact about Aimee is that she is a competitive mountain biker. Aimee is an exceptional cellist with empathy for others. She always thinks of others before herself and is sensitive to musical ideas. She has perfect pitch and is so valuable to the ensemble. We will miss her so much!

T. K. DART VIOLIN T.K. entered Camarata and ASO in his freshman year. After graduation T.K. plans on attending either Stanford University, Whitman College, or Washington State University pursuing pre-med and specializing in pathology. In orchestra he organized the Sprague Borodin Quartet collaborating with the . T.K.’s favorite memories are with the quartet playing at multiple events such as the Mayor's State of the City address and performing for the Oregon Supreme Court. Competing at State his Sophomore year was also a highlight for him. Outside of orchestra, T.K. enjoys cooking and trying new recipes. He is entertaining to have in class. As the ConcertMaster of Camerata, he works really hard to be the best violinist at Sprague. He is passionate about music and actually really loves to mentor the freshmen and fourth graders. Fun memories of T.K. include one time when Mrs. Rael reminded him that moving one's jaw from side to side could cause TMJ. All the fun aside, T.K. is no doubt the MVP of the Orchestra and he will be greatly missed.

MINDY ALTSCHUL VIOLIN Mindy is going to study robotics at one of these universities: OSU Honors College, Colorado School of Mines, or the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. She is a bright and talented violinist, so of course she’s taking her violin and hoping to play in the symphony at college! Mindy’s biggest accomplishment was being 3rd chair 2nd violin in All City last year. Her audition was really tough with some insanely fast Mozart. All City was so much fun! She loved playing with her old friends from other schools and the music was great. Mindy was the 2nd violin section leader in Camerata. She has a vast knowledge of classical music and is great to have in both Camerata and ASO. Mindy especially loved playing in the symphony because for her it was a truly powerful and magical experience. Going to State was also amazing. Chamber camp at the beach was great because of getting to hang out with friends all weekend and play some good music. The list could go on and on of her wonderful adventures with Orchestra. Mindy is super caring for others and can be counted on to ask those questions in class that everyone is wondering. Mindy is such a dedicated and hard worker in the violin section and she will be greatly missed. Mindy holds an erhu which is a two stringed Chinese violin. It is kind of like the bass with it resting upright on your knee with the bow between the strings.
