COMMENTARY PREP BASEBALL: DALTON CATAMOUNTS Speed not Williams’ only gift

organ Williams, a standout sprinter for MMNorthwest Whitfield almost from the moment she stepped on campus, is used to things going by pretty quickly. When you’ve run the 400-meter dash in 56 seconds and change — as she did to break the school record when she was only a freshman — the landscape can be a bit blurry at times. However, even for the speed-driven Williams, the realization that her time as a Lady Bruin is almost over brings a dose of reality just about every Marty high school senior experi- Kirkland ences in some form. “It just feels like yesterday I was a freshman,”said Williams, who will head to the Class 4A state meet in Albany next week to compete in the 400 and 800, plus anchor the team’s 4x400 relay after first-place finishes in all of those events at the Region 7-4A meet. It was a big shock. I wasn’t expecting all that would come with it. It’s been a blessing.” But while winning was nice DANGER for her as a freshman, she was smart enough even then to take away something more from that year than good times and shiny medals by listening to the advice of senior mentors Shelley Taylor and Brinkley Knowles.
