“Technical Test in Budapest” Press Release … Press Release … Press Release … Press Release … Press Release … Press Release … Press Release … Press Release … Press For Sports Editors August 13 th 2009 “Technical Test in Budapest” As the Red Bull Air Race World Championships arrives in Budapest, the Breitling Team feels confident that the latest improvements made to their MXS aircraft will give them the competitive edge come Qualification and Race Day. (19 th and 20 th August) After the disappointment of a disqualification in Windsor, Canada the MXS was shipped back to the UK and over the last 4 weeks, 2 teams of engineers have been working round the clock to finalise a program of modifications. Nigel Lamb (pilot) Comments ‘We have introduced a second ‘upgrade package’. This is focused mostly on aerodynamics and with several modifications coming online at the same time. Ideally, we’d love to be able to test each one independently to measure the individual effect but we simply don’t have the time, especially taking into account different atmospheric conditions for comparison testing, the challenge of a 3D test track and notoriously inaccurate ASI (air speed indicators). Some mods are small and the results would be imperceptible; some are bigger and I’d be disappointed not to see some improvement” This will be Nigel’s 5 th race in Budapest, and it looks likely the pilots will get to start and finish the race by flying under the picturesque Chain Link Bridge. With only 12m clearance it is a true test of skill especially as they have to keep a keen eye on their speed, a fraction over 200kts or they are instantly disqualified. ‘Although the track here doesn’t have a chicane or a quadro it is still a real technical challenge, I believe whoever shows the superior technique in the 3 vertical turning manoeuvres will probably win” This shouldn’t be a problem for the 8 times British Aerobatic Champion Nigel Lamb, who celebrates his birthday on Monday (1 st training day) A podium finish would be a fitting present. His wife Hilary and 3 boys Max, Daniel and Ben will certainly be cheering from the crowd. The fastest motorsport series in the world Cfeatures 14 of the best race pilots in a pure motorsport competition that combines speed, precision and skill. Using the fastest, most agile and lightweight racing planes, pilots navigate a low-level aerial track made up of air-filled pylons 25 meters high. New since 2014 is the Challenger Cup, a competition which enables young talented pilots to work towards gaining entry into the Master Class of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship. When the 2015 Red Bull Air Race World Championship kicked off in Abu Dhabi on 13th/14th February, defending champion Nigel Lamb had his work cut out for him. The Brit was pushed to the limits by the 2008 world champion Hannes Arch who finished second overall last year – and the two-time world champion Paul Bonhomme, who won last year’s season opener in Abu Dhabi and was third overall in 2014. 1 waterfrontmagazines.co.uk 2 Sport In what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive fields in the history of the world’s fastest motorsports series, Lamb will also be trying to stay on top of the expanded roster of 14 pilots in the high-speed, low-altitude sport. “Those sudden changes make the track even more difficult for the pilots when they’re flying through it at 370 km/h.” There were five different winners in the eight races last season as the gaps between victory and defeat dwindled to their closest ever, just a mere thousandth of a second separating some heats, and nine of the 12 pilots made it onto the podium at least once.

  • Red Bull Air Race World Championship Returns in 2014
Red Bull Air Race World Championship returns in 2014 The Red Bull Air Race World Championship will be back in the skies in February 2014 with a full seven-race World Championship staged in 6 countries on 3 continents including the UK. The return of the world’s fastest motorsport series was announced at a news conference at the Putrajaya Maritime Centre in Malaysia today. PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), October 8th 2013. “We’re delighted to announce that the new Red Bull Air Race World Championship will be launched on February 28th in Abu Dhabi (UAE),” said Erich Wolf, CEO Red Bull Air Race GmbH. “We’ve all worked very hard over the last three years fine-tuning some of the safety aspects to bring the sport to a new level. We never took our eye off the target and neither have these fantastic pilots or the great fans around the world. Their interest in the sport remained unbelievably high during these past few years. We can’t wait to get back in the air in February 2014.” The fourth stop on the 2014 calendar brings the Championship to Ascot Racecourse (UK). Charles Barnett, CEO Ascot said, “The Red Bull Air Race World Championship, like Ascot, is a respected global brand and showcases elite pilots to a worldwide audience. This is a tremendously important announcement for us as this is by far the most significant event outside Horse Racing that we have staged at the racecourse. The UK has a reputation as a leader in staging major sports events – the recent Olympic Games, of course, and high profile annual events such as Wimbledon, The Open Championship and, of course, Royal Ascot.

  • The 2014 Air Race Season So
WHEL – Aerospace Resources & more (www.whel.de) The 2014 air race season so far Now that the spectacular first-ever Red Bull Air Race in Putrajaya, Malaysia, has come to a close it’s probably the right time for an early review. Following a three year break, the return of the air race in 2014 was desperately sought after by pilots and fans alike. Expectations were certainly high, but also clearly some things had to be changed. Now, have these changes paid off? Here’s the lowdown fol- lowing three exiting races with three different winners on three fairly different race tracks. Standardised engines, propellers and exhaust systems This has probably been the most important move to re-establish the Red Bull Air Race as a competi- tion among the best, most skilful aerobatic pilots in the world. Rather than allowing it to further evolve into a “who will spend the most on tuning his engine”-game, Formula 1-style. At the end of the 2010 season the final race at EuroSpeedway Lausitz made clear the airplanes apparently weren’t on level playing ground. There was said to be an advantage of around 20% in power from the strongest over fairly stock engines on some airplanes. We are talking some extra 50 horse powers here. At the same time lightweight props were adding performance but also safety risks. Now the standardised Lycoming Thunderbolt AEIO-540-EXP engines are quoted to be within 2% of each other. That translates to around 5 horse powers margin; something that may not make all the difference in the world.

G-Force Aerobatics : Chris Burkett flying the Extra 300S Commentary Notes Please see the website http://www.gforceaerobatics.com for similar/supplementary information. Please mention that we can be booked to fly at private events, and refer to the above website. The display sequence is of course subject to weather – these notes give information on a typical full sequence when the cloudbase allows (c. 2000 feet). Display Sequence – Manoeuvres A diving start, with multiple flick rolls, usually towards the crowd (depending on site). Pull up into a freestyle manoeuvre usually known as a Mulleroid – invented by and named after the Swiss aerobatic champion Eric Muller. His own name for it was the “Zwirbelturm” or “spiralling tower” sometimes referred to as the “helicopter spin” which is also quite descriptive. This is an upward negative flick roll, which is made flatter and flatter until the plane is spinning horizontally at the top with its nose on the horizon, before descending back down in a positive flat spin at full throttle. The next figure is usually an upward tumble with the nose held on the horizon by full rudder plus the effect of torque and precession from the propeller, which keeps the aircraft sideways as it tumbles upwards. At the next pull-up Chris flies a double flick roll at the top of a loop, sometimes known as an avalanche. Instead of continuing the pull he pushes upwards round a full outside loop, quite an uncomfortable manoeuvre with the blood rushing to your head under negative g. At other times Chris’ body will be experiencing 8 positive g and weighing more than half a tonne, hence a regular training programme is important to withstand the extreme forces of unlimited level aerobatics.
