Data Appendix A - Annex A - Core Indicators Local Landscape The Humber Estuary Plan (see Annex B for more information) sets out how the Humber Region will accelerate clean growth in the Energy Estuary, develop the Humber Ports and Manufacturing Clusters, manage the Humber Estuary and attract and deliver new investment. It will also present wider priorities for growth and productivity. There will be a clear map of progression towards key priorities such as achieving a net zero carbon industrial cluster by 2040 and the skills that support these industries. Challenges include: Deprivation which is especially high in education, skills and training, income, and employment An increasingly ageing population which will reduce the pool of labour in the Humber A higher proportion of employment within the Humber of occupations with lower skill Lower wages than England Productivity gap with the UK Low business net birth rates Opportunities include: A large manufacturing base which is well positioned to capitalise on HEY’s strategic sectors and high value opportunities High employment levels in high growth sectors such as health and social care which are increasingly important within the context of COVID-19 COVID-19 has had a lower impact on claimant counts and a lower take-up of furlough (30% vs 32% nationally) in Hull and East Yorkshire and the Humber compared to England. Lower business insolvency rates than at the national level since the onset of COVID-19 The Humber has experienced the 3rd highest business growth of all LEP areas since May 2020. Business optimism suggests local resilience to some of the impacts of COVID-19. Employment by sector A.1 There are around 261,000 jobs in Hull & East Yorkshire which account for around 64% of the 406,000 total jobs in the Humber. 4 Hull & East Yorkshire Local Skills Report Annexes – Core Indicators and Additional Data A.2 The main sectors of employment in Hull & East Yorkshire include retail (16% or 41,000 jobs), manufacturing (15% or 38,000 jobs) and health and social care (13% or 35,000 jobs) and together these sectors account for 44% of total employment in the HEY LEP area. These sectors align with the main employment sectors in the Humber, in which manufacturing, retail and health account for a slightly higher share at 46% of total jobs within the Humber. A.3 The share of employment within these three sectors in Hull & East Yorkshire is higher than at the national level (44% vs 35% nationally) and Hull & East Yorkshire’s strong manufacturing employment base aligns with strategic priority sectors in ports, logistics and manufacturing within the Humber. This means that the employment in Hull & East Yorkshire and the Humber is slightly less exposed to the impacts of COVID-19 on employment than is seen nationally, when taking into account sectors other than retail. 5 Hull & East Yorkshire Local Skills Report Annexes – Core Indicators and Additional Data A.5 The Location Quotient (LQ) is a measure of the concentration of employment within a given

    MIGRATION IN EAST YORKSHIRE IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY Henry S. Woledge and Michael A. Smale Henry Woledge graduated in geography and geology at Keele University and after early retirement from a career in town and country planning has pursued his interest in local history. Michael Smale, a graduate of Oxford and York Universities, is currently working towards a PhD at Hull University, focusing upon migration into later nineteenth-century Hull. Introduction The system of relief for the needy poor in England and Wales, which operated from the sixteenth century, has left a wealth of records. A prominent element of the system, from 1662 onwards but with continual modifications, was that relief was provided by the parish where people were ‘settled’, and in the eighteenth century they were liable to be ‘removed’ back to that parish in order to obtain relief.1 The resulting documents are essentially of four types: settlement certificates, settlement examinations, removal orders and appeal orders. Certificates were provided by the parish of settlement, accepting responsibility in case of need, to enable a person to move to live and work in another parish. Examinations were made to establish where a person’s settlement was: taken under oath (but nevertheless not always truthful) they vary from the minimal (for example, 3 May 1790 John Hare. Settlement at Nunburnholme)2 to detailed accounts of relevant information,3 especially in the 19th century. Removal orders were the legal means of moving people to their place of settlement and give the date, the people concerned, the places removed from and to, often the status of women (singlewoman, wife, widow) and sometimes the ages of children.

    Hull History Centre: Papers of the Barnards Family of South Cave U DDBA Papers of the Barnards Family 1401-1945 of South Cave Historical background: The papers relate to the branch of the family headed by Leuyns Boldero Barnard who began building up a landed estate centred on South Cave in the mid-eighteenth century. His inherited ancestry can be traced back to William and Elizabeth Barnard in the late sixteenth century. Their son, William Barnard, became mayor of Hull and died in 1614. Of his seven sons, two of them also served time as mayor of Hull, including the sixth son, Henry Barnard (d.1661), through whose direct descendants Leuyns Boldero Barnard was eventually destined to succeed. Henry Barnard, married Frances Spurrier and together had a son and a daughter. His daughter, Frances, married William Thompson MP of Humbleton and his son, Edward Barnard, who lived at North Dalton, was recorder of Hull and Beverley from the early 1660s until 1686 when he died. He and his wife Margaret, who was also from the Thompson family, had at least seven children, the eldest of whom, Edward Barnard (d.1714), had five children some of whom died without issue and some had only female heirs. The second son, William Barnard (d.1718) married Mary Perrot, the daughter of a York alderman, but had no children. The third son, Henry Barnard (will at U DDBA/14/3), married Eleanor Lowther, but he also died, in 1769 at the age of 94, without issue. From the death of Henry Barnard in 1769 the family inheritance moved laterally.

Published 2013 by The Blackthorn Press Chapter 1 Introduction to Roman Yorkshire ‘In the abundance and variety of its Roman antiquities, Yorkshire stands second to no other county’ Frank and Harriet Wragg Elgee (1933) The Yorkshire region A Roman army first entered what we now know as Yorkshire in about the year AD 48, according to the Roman author Cornelius Tacitus ( Annals XII, 32). This was some five years after the invasion of Britain itself ordered by the Emperor Claudius. The soldiers’ first task in the region was to assist in the suppression of a rebellion against a Roman ally, Queen Cartimandua of the Brigantes, a native people who occupied most of northern England. The Roman army returned to the north in about the years 51-2, once again to support Cartimandua who was, Tacitus tells us, now under attack by her former consort, a man named Venutius ( Annals XII, 40). In 69 a further dispute between Cartimandua and Venutius, for which Tacitus is again the (only) source, may have provided a pretext for the Roman army to begin the conquest of the whole of northern Britain ( Histories III, 45). England south of Hadrian’s Wall, including Yorkshire, was to remain part of the Roman Empire for about 340 years. The region which is the principal subject of this book is Yorkshire as it was defined before local government reorganisation in 1974. There was no political entity corresponding to the county in Roman times. It was, according to the second century Greek geographer Ptolemy, split between the Brigantes and the Parisi, a people who lived in what is now (after a brief period as Humberside) the East Riding.

The Government issued further guidance on planning for minerals in the National Planning Practice Guidance (NPPG), incorporating previous guidance on the Managed Aggregate Supply System (MASS). This report is the sixth LAA that aims to meet the requirements set out in both of these documents. It is based on sales information data covering the calendar years up to 2018. Landbank data is 2018-based. Sales and land bank information is sourced from annual surveys of aggregate producers in the Humber area (East Riding of Yorkshire, Kingston upon Hull, North East Lincolnshire & North Lincolnshire), alongside data from the Yorkshire & Humber Aggregates Working Party Annual Monitoring Reports, planning applications, the Crown Estate, and the Environment Agency.
