Gralnick Brooklyn Daily Eagle I just read a short story that has relevance. Written by a Chinese-American, it is about food and her family’s acculturation. In their new neigh- borhood a white American family, whose daugh- ter attended public school with the Chinese fami- ly’s daughter, watched out for them. One day the family invited the new immigrant neighbors over for dinner. Prior to dinner there was the obligatory hors d’oeuvres. On the relish tray were fresh veg- gies including celery. There began the problem. In China, one didn’t eat vegetables raw. For health and sanitary reasons, one always cooked them. Thus, the family had never seen fresh cel- ery put out to eat. They didn’t know what to do with it because it was obvious to them that it was there by mistake. So, they looked around and ob- served the others who were happily munching away on their celery. Inwardly they shrugged, and each took a piece. Crunching in unison, they dis- covered something. Strings. We take it for granted but think a moment of the celery you find in your chicken soup, or celery soup for that matter. It is soft, floppy, and needs no chewing. Fresh celery however has these, well, strings that are reduced to mush by boiling. Un- cooked the strings get caught in your teeth. Obvi- ously, the Americans must know how to deal with that and did it while the Chinese weren’t watch- ing. So, they did what they thought was natural. They then noticed the room was silent. But in re- cent months, he’s made it his mission to scrub ev- ery corner. “The experience of all those deaths we had to live through makes me want to do my job with great care, because I don’t want anyone to get infected,” said Tapia, who sometimes wears a hazmat suit to sanitize the pews between services. More than 100 congregants of the parish in the mostly Latino neighborhood of Corona died of COVID-19, many of them in the early days of the pandemic. And Tapia’s family was not spared. Tapia’s son, Juan Jr., had worked with him at the church. The son was diagnosed with lung can- cer before he contracted the virus that infected the whole family; he died on May 6, the anniversary of his baptism more than 20 years before. He was 27 years old. “No family should have to go through this,” said his father. Dominican President Danilo Medina Sánchez presented Ventura with the Medal of Merit of the Dominican Women during an official ceremony at the National Palace in Santo Domingo, the na- tion’s capital. The president of the Dominican Republic is- sues the award to notable Dominican women, or the children of Dominican nationals, each Inter- national Women’s Day. The award ceremony took place March 6. The Medal of Merit is the highest award granted by the president to recognize Dominican women for their achievements, as well as obsta- cles they have overcome. The award specifically recognizes women who serve as role models for future generations of Dominicans. Recipients include women recognized for their contributions in the social, political, econom- ic, humanist, scientific, cultural, professional and community spheres.
