ACTON MEMORIAL LIBRARY (I~) 486 Main Street Acton, Massachusetts 01720 978 264-9641 TDD 978 635-0072 ACTON MEMORIAL LIBRARY (i~) 486 Main Street Acton, Massachusetts 01720 978 264-9641 TDD 978 635-0072 January 22, 2009 Board of Selectmen CIo Town Manager’s Office Acton Town Hall Members of the Board, I would like your consent to dispose of 608 items that have been removed from Acton Memorial Library’s collection. A list of the items is attached. As of July 1, 2008, there were slightly over 148,000 items in Memorial Library’s collection. Most of the items have been withdrawn by professional librarians on staff due to poor condition, lack of accuracy or use, or because they are no-longer-needed multiple copies of a title which was once in high demand. A few have been lost or severely damaged and paid for by library users or identified as items which are no longer in the collection and need to be removed from the database to maintain its integrity. Following your approval, they will be disposed of in the manner approved by the Board of Selectmen in February 2007. Thank you for your consideration of this matter. Sincerely, Marcia A. • A Writer's Calendar
A WRITER’S CALENDAR Compiled by J. L. Herrera for my mother and with special thanks to Rose Brown, Peter Jones, Eve Masterman, Yvonne Stadler, Marie-France Sagot, Jo Cauffman, Tom Errey and Gianni Ferrara INTRODUCTION I began the original calendar simply as a present for my mother, thinking it would be an easy matter to fill up 365 spaces. Instead it turned into an ongoing habit. Every time I did some tidying up out would flutter more grubby little notes to myself, written on the backs of envelopes, bank withdrawal forms, anything, and containing yet more names and dates. It seemed, then, a small step from filling in blank squares to letting myself run wild with the myriad little interesting snippets picked up in my hunting and adding the occasional opinion or memory. The beginning and the end were obvious enough. The trouble was the middle; the book was like a concertina — infinitely expandable. And I found, so much fun had the exercise become, that I was reluctant to say to myself, no more. Understandably, I’ve been dependent on other people’s memories and record- keeping and have learnt that even the weightiest of tomes do not always agree on such basic ‘facts’ as people’s birthdays. So my apologies for the discrepancies which may have crept in. In the meantime — Many Happy Returns! Jennie Herrera 1995 2 A Writer’s Calendar January 1st: Ouida J. D. Salinger Maria Edgeworth E. M. Carter Brown? Barbara Cartland? Ursula Bloom? Enid Blyton? Not necessarily, but it does tend to be clear, simple, lucid, overlapping, and sometimes repetitive.

MWA's Grand Master Award represents the pinnacle of achievement in mystery writing and was established to acknowledge important contributions to this genre, as well as for a body of work that is both significant and of consistent high quality. Mr. Collins and Ms. Hart will receive their awards at the 71st Annual Edgar Awards Banquet, which will be held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City on Thursday, April 27, 2017. When told of being named a Grand Master, Collins said, “To be in the company of Agatha Christie, Rex Stout and Mickey Spillane is both thrilling and humbling. This is an honor second to none in the art of mystery and suspense fiction.” Max Allan Collins sold his first two novels in 1972 while a student at the University of Iowa Writers Workshop. More than one hundred novels have followed, including his award- winning and groundbreaking Nathan Heller historical series, starting with True Detective (1983).
