HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION TOM FITZPATRTCK, anaheim fullback-linebacker TOP PLAYER IN CIF "AAAA" FOOTBALL FOR 1967 FOR RELEASE: THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 1968 and after...A. * * * DO NOT RELEASE PRIOR TO JAN. 4 am

A naheim High School's fullback-linebacker, Tom Fitzpatrick, has been selected Southern 's top prep football performer for the 1967 season and the Colonists placed four of their "AAAA" CIF Division athletes on the first team, as members of All-Southern California Board of Athletics met at Helms Hall to make their annual all-star team selections. Fitzpatrick, who started slowly in 1967 for the Clare Van Hoorebeke-coached eleven due to an untested knee operated on at the close of the 1966 season, won out in Player of the Year balloting over several other first-team backfield members. The most notable of these being Anaheim's sophomore QB whiz, George Fraser, Tom Fitzpatrick, Anaheim High's "bread-'n'-butter" man over the past two seasons, performed at fullback on offense and linebacker on defense for the "AAAA" CIF Division champions this past season. Tom who suffered knee trouble last year and suffered through an in-between-season operation, started slowly in 1967. For the year, Tom carried 92 times for 464 yards (5-yard avg.) and seven touchdowns. He also com pleted 10 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns. This marked the first CIF title for coach Van Hoorebeke and his Anaheim Col onists. They finished in the runner-up spot to El Rancho last year, losing to the Dons 35-14 in the title decider. Although finishing second to Santa Ana in the tough Sunset League, Anaheim came back to sweep through the playoffs and soundly defeat the Saints 27-6. On the way to the title Anaheim defeated Long Beach Wilson (35-13), El Rancho (28-14), Santa Barbara (42-7), before the decider with Santa Ana. For having been named as the top Southland prep player for 1967, Tom Fitz patrick will be honored at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 20th at the 31st annual All—Southern California Board of Football awards program. Tom will receive a special medallion award for being recognized as the season's best prep, along with a beautiful framed scroll. Coach Clare Van Hoorebeke will also be honored with a silver tumbler, awarded each season the the championship coach. Twenty-four "AAAA" Division schools are represented on this year's selectios (three teams), with Anaheim and Santa Ana placing four players each on the all-star units. Three schools placed three performers...Burroughs, Notre Dame and Santa Barb ara. The latter school, a semi-finalist in the playoffs, scored 503 points during the full '67 season, falling just 16 points short of setting a new single-season scoring mark. El Rancho's title team of one year ago scored 518 points in 13 games for a 39.7 point average, while Santa Barbara's 503 markers were accumulated in 12 engagements. Notre Dame's and Eric Patton of Mater Dei, both on this year's first team, are the only repeaters from last season, when both were named at lineback er...Patton on the first team and Vella on the third. For the second year, linebackers have been selected on all three teams, mak ing a total of 14 performers on each team. Five backfield performers are also picked. PAST C.I.F. Polytechnic High's East-Valley League Champions placed two performers on the 1967 all-star offensive unit and four on the defensive eleven, including Player of the Year and star linebacker Joe Mellado, as members of Helms Athletic Foundation's All-Los Angeles City Board of Football met at Helms Hall to make their annual grid selections. Mellado, who coach A1 Richards praises as 'One of the best linebackers in the city as well as starting tight end. Is excellent on pass coverage and has good range in filling in. He's the hardest hitter on the team." poly, winner of its league title with a 3-0-1 record, was followed by Grant (3-1), Van Nuys (2-1-1), Verdugo Hills (1-3) and North Hollywood (0-4). Poly whipped South Gate 28—20 in the first round of the playoffs and then dropped its next game to San Fernando, 35-7. Cliff Reynolds and A1 Gee wound up tied for the league scoring crown with 66 points, which gave them a tie for 6th among city scorers. Cliff was on the league second team last year and is one of four repeaters from last year. Eric Shirley, Poly's remarkable kicking specialist who accounted for five field goals and 15 of 17 PATs, was selected as a kicking specialist on this year's team. Eric also kicked off and punted for Poly. All players named for East Valley League honors will receive Helms scroll awards which will be forwarded to the schools for presentation. Player of the Year Mellado will receive his medallion award at Helms Hall on Saturday, January 20th at the 31st annual Board of Football awards program.
