Timeline.Pdf New Wortley Our Place Partners and Quotes For many years New Wortley has been a part of Leeds which featured at the bottom of most indicators, Health, Unemployment, Crime, Housing, environment, education. For whatever reason the population felt forgotten about just putting up with these issues and accepting they lived in an area where life chances were much less than other parts of Leeds only a couple of miles away. New Wortley was part of the Wortley ward, then a few years ago it become part of the Armley ward, it was a ward where it felt worthless. For services and agencies New Wortley was a difficult place to deliver services into, due the challenging nature of the local population and any dialogue was often brief, angry or misunderstood. New Wortley Our Place has brought together a wide range of local people and services all to start to focus on the priorities and key issues in new Wortley. The range and depth of the services listed show that a lot of services are involved in the local area, but the evidence makes you wonder to what outcome? Our Place has helped us build the bridges between services, local people and people who work in the area. It has given us the time and space to ask the questions and hear/ listen to the local people. Our place has given us the space to listen and hear, and listen and hear again, making sure that what our plan is will be community led and focussed. Our place was probably not designed for an area like New Wortley, but we have shown even the most disadvantaged community can benefit from Our Place and use it as a mechanism for change. It has heightened understanding of the needs of the community and enabled a cohesive plan to be established. My hopes are a healthy, happy community that is safe and supportive, where all children achieve their full potential” Andrea Riley, Co-Head Teacher, Castleton Primary School “Leeds Community Foundation has supported New Wortley Community Centre through a number of our different funds and resources, and it's been fantastic to see how the Our Place Process has connected key people - who have all been active in the area but never all sat down and talked together - and challenged them to rethink what the community needs, rather than what they can offer. I also think we are starting to see the ripples from the New Wortley Our Place spreading right across the city” Pip Goff, Programmes Manager, Leeds Community Foundation “Our Place, a great vehicle to drive improvements locally for residents ensuring joined up services within the locality deliver what the community wants, I'm looking forward to continuing to improve services through this enhanced partnership approach” Gerard Tinsdale, Area Housing Manager, Leeds Housing “I have enjoyed helping put together the supporting statistics and presentations for the Our Place plan and have found it very encouraging that so many people have invested their time and shown such commitment it trying to make New Wortley a better place to live” Gary Murphy, Our Place administrator “It's been an inspiration to work with the folk of New Wortley as they have been developing their innovative Our Place plan which will make such a difference to their neighbourhood. We’re all looking forward to playing our part in its delivery, working alongside local residents to achieve their ambitions for their neighbourhood.” Shaid Mahmood, Chief Officer for Communities “The New Wortley area of Leeds has been crying out for a homogenous plan to which all the partners are committed and where local people have a voice. For me, this opportunity to access the views, needs and wants of the local community is the single most important feature of the New Wortley Our Place plan” I am certain that this new approach will result in all the partners and local people interacting with each other in a way that benefits the residents of New Wortley, reducing real crime levels, tackling vulnerability resulting in a community that is more confident and more resilient. The residents of New Wortley are fortunate to have Bill and his band of dedicated volunteers taking this initiative forward” Simon Jessup, Inspector Leeds District – Inner West “We've got great community activists in the area who are working together with all the agencies and local businesses to ensure that the Our Place community plan and vision for New Wortley become a reality. It has involved local people, workers in the area and people in strategic roles that are keen to make a difference. It has been challenging and has highlighted some of the deep seated social and economic problems in the area. Although education is a relatively new phenomenon in the English and Welsh penal system, by the 20th century, education had become an integral part of prison life. It served partly as a control mechanism and partly for more altruistic needs. Until 1993 the management and delivery of education and training in prisons was carried out by local education authority staff. Since that time, the education responsibility has been contracted out to organizations such as the Staff College, other universities, and private training organizations. Various policy implications were resolved in order to allow these organizations to provide prison education. Today, prison education programs are probably the most comprehensive of any found in the country. They may range from literacy education to postgraduate study, with students ranging in age from 15 to over 65. The curriculum focuses on social and life skills.

  • Statues Review Report Appendix 1A 091020 , Item 63. PDF 567 KB
Appendix 1 – Statue Review Report and Recommendations Statues Review Report and Recommendations Written by Alison Lowe Introduction On 10th June 2020, Cllr Judith Blake issued a statement on Black Lives Matter and statues, which strongly condemned the killing of George Floyd whilst also acknowledging the scourge of racism which still exists across the world; leading to injustice, discrimination and harm to the diverse communities of Leeds. In the same statement, referring to the recent toppling of Edward Colston’s statue in Bristol, Cllr Blake said “We also understand the anguish caused by statues of some historical figures. There will therefore be a city wide review of statues in Leeds to understand their history and context, as well as to ensure our city’s rich multi-cultural history is appropriately celebrated and represented and also to identify any gaps that exist. It is important the review works closely with communities and cultural partners from across the city. We are delighted to announce that Alderwoman Alison Lowe has agreed to lead the review and her vast experience in this area is very much welcome”. The day before on 9th June, the statue of Queen Victoria on Woodhouse Moor was vandalised with graffiti and the words “educate”, “colonise” and “slave owner” were sprayed over the statue. A petition to remove Sir Robert Peel from Woodhouse Moor, also began to circulate. The Local Government Association announced a review of statues and developed an advice note for Labour-led authorities, which recommended “community dialogue” as the best way to hear all sides of the debate with an objective group of people – preferably academics and historians – to undertake the work.

  • One Nation: Power, Hope, Community
one nation power hope community power hope community Ed Miliband has set out his vision of One Nation: a country where everyone has a stake, prosperity is fairly shared, and we make a common life together. A group of Labour MPs, elected in 2010 and after, describe what this politics of national renewal means to them. It begins in the everyday life of work, family and local place. It is about the importance of having a sense of belonging and community, and sharing power and responsibility with people. It means reforming the state and the market in order to rebuild the economy, share power hope community prosperity, and end the living standards crisis. And it means doing politics in a different way: bottom up not top down, organising not managing. A new generation is changing Labour to change the country. • Review Report Launch Programme and Agenda
1 Introduction Covid-19 has highlighted health inequalities faced by Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities and colleagues. The pandemic has also drawn attention to the impact of systemic racism on people’s lives. • Regarding the Sale of Alcohol at 15 Branch Road Armley, I Am Writing to Object and Contest It Should Not Be Granted
From:Mudge, Peter Sent:25 May 2021 14:36:00 +0100 To:Deighton, Charlotte Subject:Amended Hi Charlotte, I realise one bit of my opposition to 15 Branch Rd is incorrect – where Alison Lowe mentions the 24 hr off licence has been closed. Here is a version with the erroneous bit removed. Can it still go without my phone number or email please. “Regarding the sale of alcohol at 15 Branch Road Armley, I am writing to object and contest it should not be granted. A general store concentrating on Lietuvaite - which I understand is a rye bread - would be most welcome, but the off-licence aspect would be exacerbation of Armley’s already nationally advertised drink problems. Crime & Disorder - The site is in one of the most problematic illegal drinking areas in Yorkshire and therefore the UK. Indeed in the national Phase 2 of the “UK Towns’ Fund”, the government is currently suggesting a combined project so they work with the public sector, businesses and community to find innovative solutions to problems faced in Armley town centre. Independent of this government involvement, asb in Armley escalated as current lockdowns eased. Consequently West Yorkshire Police and Leeds Anti-Social Behaviour team are undertaking a series of projects to combat crime and fear of crime. In a letter they distributed at the start of May to every business and household in the vicinity of Armley town centre their opening lines are: “Dear resident, business owner or proprietor, “We are aware of the history of high levels of anti-social behaviour in and around the Armley Town Street Area.
