This trip covered the main tour, focusing on the riches of the Amazon, and combined it with custom extensions into another part of the Amazon (for Harpy Eagle at a nest site), and to other cloudforest and high Andean sites to add yet more . When we looked back on the trip we had many special birds, although these were the ones highlighted by the group as particularly memorable: Harpy and Crested Eagles, Hoatzin, Sunbittern, Bare-faced and Scarlet Ibises, White-Plumed, Yellow-browed, Black-and-white , Plum-throated Cotinga, Ladder- tailed Nightjar, Scarlet Macaw, Orange-fronted Plushcrown, Castelnau’s and Cocha Antshrikes, Azure Gallinule, Wire-tailed and White-lored Antpitta. Our total seen were 475, with a further 48 only heard.

TOUR SUMMARY:

June 19: Quito to Coca; boat transfer to Sani Lodge. Today we started this awesome trip into the Ecuadorian Amazon trip, which is where I am from originally. I was so glad to be here! We followed all the country protocols to ensure us a safe trip during the era of Covid.

Once we all met at a nice hotel in the east of Quito, near the airport, we drove towards the Amazon, which took us just about six hours. This trip was designed to drive, rather than fly into the Amazon. This allowed us to make some birding stops on the way over through the Andes, where we saw some non-Amazonian species like Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle and great looks of Torrent Duck. We also stopped in at a small private reserve for a flurry of at their feeders, which paid off with Long-tailed Sylph, Booted Racket-tail, Sparkling and Brown Violetears, Speckled , Violet-fronted Brilliant, Bronzy Inca, Green-backed and the cute Gorgeted Woodstar.

Yellow-bellied Dacnis from the Amazon

Once we arrived in the Amazonian city of Coca, we get on board our motorized boat to take us to our lodge. Then we traveled along the mighty Napo River, where it took about three hours to reach the dock of Sani lodge. While traveling by boat we saw some common Amazonian birds www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] p.3 Ecuador: Amazing Amazon Tropical Birding - Trip Report (and extensions for Harpy Eagle and Andes) Jun-Jul 2021 from the boat, like White-banded and White-winged Swallows, Gray-breasted Martin, Swallowing Puffbird, Giant Cowbird, Black Caracara and our first Greater Yellow-headed Vulture. Finally, we arrived at the Sani community where I was born and spend the first part of my life, and where Sani Lodge now presides. The main river was exceptionally high, and so we took a small boat to get to the lodge from our landing spot. While waiting for our second boat trip of the day, we started to pick up Amazonian birds, like Cobalt-winged Parakeet, Cinnamon- throated , Thrush-like Wren, Crested and Russet-backed Oropendolas, Yellow- rumped Cacique, Slate-colored Hawk and hummers like Black-throated Mango and Glittering- throated Emerald. Once we arrived at the lodge and having been welcomed by the staff, we did a little bit of birding on the lodge grounds, which was extremely productive as usual! We saw our first Hoatzin, an amazon icon if there ever was one! On top of that, we located Capped and Striated Herons, Crimson-crested Woodpecker, Ringed Kingfisher, Variegated, Crowned Slaty and Social Flycatchers, the handsome Yellow-bellied Dacnis, Black-tailed Tityra, a nesting Pink- throated Becard, Hook-billed Kite, plus a bunch of Blue-and-yellow Macaws in flight, and some rowdy Violaceous Jays coming to roost near the lodge. I should also mention for this section we had Carlos, one of my cousins, who is fantastic.

June 20: Sani Lodge (Canopy Tower and the Trails). After our first early breakfast (traditional in the Amazon), it was time to head towards the wooden Canopy Tower, which reaches just over hundred feet above ground. This would allow us to view the canopy and some species which reside up there and are very difficult to see from ground level. After a short canoe ride across the large lagoon, beside which the lodge is situated, we arrived at the tower. Once there, we started to see species like, White-throated and Channel-billed Toucans, Mealy, Orange-winged and Black-headed Parrots, and Chestnut-fronted, Red-bellied and Blue-and-yellow Macaws flying passed us at eye level. We also enjoyed better looks of a Slate-colored Hawk and got a nesting Double- toothed Kite. Other tower birds in the early morning blitz of birds, were Plumbeous Kite, Many-banded Araçari, Slender-footed Tyrannulet, Gray-crowned Flatbill, Blue-throated Piping-Guan, and Citron-bellied Atilla that was been attracted by using playback. The birds that may be remembered best though were stunning Spangled and Plum-throated Cotingas sitting in the treetops. There were some fruiting trees beside the tower, which aided us in seeing birds like Opal-crowned and Opal-rumped , and Rufous-bellied Euphonia. Other treetop dwellers of note were Yellow-browed Tody-Flycatcher, White-fronted Nunbird, www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] p.5 Ecuador: Amazing Amazon Tropical Birding - Trip Report (and extensions for Harpy Eagle and Andes) Jun-Jul 2021

White-necked Puffbird, Amazonian Trogon, Golden-collared Toucanet and Greater Yellow- headed and King Vultures flying above the canopies. Then, much later, Carlos found the rarest of the morning, a perched Crested Eagle! After birding from the tower, we birded along the forest trail below it. Fortunately, we were able to see some great birds, like Black-tailed Trogon, White-chested Puffbird, and stunning Golden-headed and Wire-tailed . Then, just before we boarded our canoe for the return trip to the lodge, we encountered a small feeding flock with Plain-throated, White-flanked and Gray Antwrens, Plain Xenops, and Plain-brown, Wedge-billed and Amazonian Barred . As we crossed the lake by canoe, we also saw more Hoatzins, Silver-beaked and Masked Crimson Tanagers, Snail Kite, Rufescent Tiger- Heron, Anhinga, Limpkin, and a lake specialist, Lesser Kiskadee.

After such a wonderful morning and a delicious lunch at the lodge, we did some birding on foot behind the Lodge. There, we were able to find Pygmy and Short-billed Antwrens, Spot-winged , Gray-fronted Dove, Southern Beardless Tyrannulet, and Golden-bellied Euphonia. Later, the trail veered towards a creek where we encountered American Pygmy Kingfisher, Straight-billed Woodcreeper, Cinnamon Atilla, Olivaceous Woodcreeper, White-chinned Jacamar, and Yellow-crowned Elaenia. However, our main reason for checking this area was for one of Sani’s specialty birds, the rare and local Cocha Antshrike, a pair of which showed up.

June 21: Sani Lodge (Yasuni National Park and Napo River islands). Today we had an early breakfast, in readiness to visit one of the largest and famous national parks in Ecuador, Yasuni. However, our plans were thwarted by heavy rains, and so we birded from the bar of the lodge, while the heavy rain continued. This was not all bad news though, as we observed Black-fronted Nunbird, Cocoi and Capped Herons, Crane and Short-tailed Hawks, Slender-billed Kite, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Gray-capped Flycatcher, Little Cuckoo, Silvered Antbird and even a Sunbittern feeding in the lodge grounds (the latter is not typical)!

Once the rain stopped, we headed towards Yasuni National Park, and decided to bird from a metal canopy tower in the local Añangu community. This turned out to be a very productive place as we saw a bunch of birds in a nice mixed feeding flock, with Flame-crested, Green-and- gold, Yellow-backed, and Paradise Tanagers, Black-faced and Blue Dacnises, Pink-throated Becard, Chestnut-winged Hookbill, Chestnut-shouldered Antwren, Fulvous Shrike , Gray Elaenia and a cute Orange-fronted Plushcrown.

In the late afternoon, we visited some Napo River Islands, where we were able to find most of the river island specialist species, like Oriole Blackbird, Lesser Hornero, White-bellied and Parker Spinetails, Black-and-white Antbird and Castelnau’s Antshrike. Also, in the same general we found other species, including Little Woodpecker, Barred Antshrike, Pale-vented Pigeon, Fork-tailed Palm-Swift, Ruddy Ground- Dove, Chestnut-bellied Seedeater, Yellow- browed Sparrow, Fuscous Flycatcher, and a Collared Plover running along a sand bar. We also found several Ladder-tailed Nightjars roosting by the riverbank. Thus, in the end, a rainy day turned into something more productive!

June 22: Sani Lodge and Sani Community. After another early breakfast at the lodge, we did a bit of birding in Terra Firme forest on the other side of the Napo River from the lodge. This forest type is not flooded like the others we had already birded, and therefore offered us a different selection of birds. Having undergone some heavy rains in recent days, the trail was unsurprisingly wet and muddy in places. With our rubber boots though (standard footwear in the Amazon!), we were able pick out birds, including a good selection of antbirds, typical of the Amazon, like White-shouldered, Sooty, Peruvian Warbling, Yellow-browed and White-plumed www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] p.8 Ecuador: Amazing Amazon Tropical Birding - Trip Report (and extensions for Harpy Eagle and Andes) Jun-Jul 2021

Antbirds (the latter an astounding species), and Dusky-throated, Cinereous and Plain-winged Antshrikes. The same trail also produced the rare Orange-eyed Flatbill, as well as Purplish Jacamar, Wing-barred Piprites, Scarlet Macaw, Double-banded Pygmy-tyrant and Cinereous Mourner. We also checked out an area of secondary growth too for a different bird set also, and added White-winged Becard, Orange-backed Troupial, Yellow-crowned Tyrannulet, Yellow- breasted Flatbill, Chestnut-bellied Seedfinch and the scare Rusty-fronted Tody-Tyrant.

After a bumper morning we did some birding along the riverside before returning to the lodge, where we spotted Drab Water-Tyrant, White-eared and Brown Jacamars, Black-crowned Tityra and we even saw more sleeping Ladder-tailed Nightjars.

June 23: Sani Lodge and Yasuni National Park. Today was our last full day of birding in the Amazonian lowlands. So, we made another attempt to visit some of the places we had not yet visited, namely the parrot clay licks in Yasuni National Park. So, right after breakfast, we headed towards there, but made a short diversion to see a White-lored Antpitta on a nearby relative’s property, when we got great views of this notoriously elusive species. The same area also www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] p.9 Ecuador: Amazing Amazon Tropical Birding - Trip Report (and extensions for Harpy Eagle and Andes) Jun-Jul 2021 yielded Amazonian Motmot, Speckled Chachalaca, Yellow-tufted Woodpecker, Orange- backed Troupial and the uncommon White-rumped Sirystes. After this spritely start, we went to visit the first clay lick along the riverbank, where we saw Dusky-headed Parakeet, Blue- headed, and Yellow-crowned and Mealy Parrots, right from the boat. Later on, we went towards the second clay lick, this time by a blind within the forest. Along the trail on our way there, we managed to find Mouse-colored Antshrike, Elegant Woodcreeper, Brownish Twistwing and a Black-bellied Cuckoo. Sometimes the parrots are nervous and hold fast in the trees, rather than drop down to the ground level clay lick. We needed to wait for an hour for them to come in, during which time we amused ourselves by watching a Bicolored-spined Porcupine!

Eventually, the hundreds of Cobalt winged Parakeets that had been chattering in the treetops, in came down to the lick. Some Scarlet Macaws were also noted perched above the blind. Just before leaving the area we visited a Great-billed Hermit lek, where we saw a few of them flying around. www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] p.10 Ecuador: Amazing Amazon Tropical Birding - Trip Report (and extensions for Harpy Eagle and Andes) Jun-Jul 2021

After such a productive morning we headed back up towards the lodge for a little rest before doing some birding along one of the trails behind the lodge. This led to a good afternoon list, including Masked Tanager, Thick-billed Euphonia, Chestnut Woodpecker and again, a Sunbittern feeding the lodge! Further inside the forest, we located Purple-throated Fruitcrow, Great Jacamar, Black-throated Trogon, and another Amazon icon, the Screaming Piha. This species has one of the most characteristic voices of any Amazon bird and so has graced many Hollywood movie soundtracks. We then settled in for our last night in this very special piece of the Amazon.

June 24: Sani Lodge to Limoncocha. After such an awesome stay at Sani Lodge it was time to say goodbye to the lodge. On our journey out by boat we sighted Hoatzin, Ringed Kingfisher, Sunbittern, Rufescent Tiger-Heron, White-winged and White-banded Swallows, Black Caracara, Greater Yellow-headed Vulture, Great Egret and Roseate Spoonbill. For those not joining the main tour, they headed back to Quito, while some carried on to another part of the Amazon and the town of Limoncocha. Once we got to Limoncocha, and having already checked into the hotel, we did a bit of local birding, which even at this quiet time of day produced White- eared Jacamar, White-winged Becard, Ruddy Ground-Dove, Magpie Tanager, Blue-black Grassquit, Gray-capped Flycatcher and the normally shy Solitary Black-Cacique. After lunch, our local guide Whimper met with us. Unfortunately, it was still hot and sunny, but we found Snail Kite, Purple Gallinule, Wattled Jacana, Green-and-rufous Kingfisher, Cream-colored and Ringed Woodpeckers, Long-billed Woodcreeper, Slender-billed Kite and Azure Gallinule, which is oddly regular at this site. Beside these, we also saw Hoatzin, Black-capped Donacobius, Greater Ani, Red-capped Cardinal, and Red-bellied Macaw.

June 25: Limoncocha Biological Reserve. After a late breakfast, it was time to look for this mighty Amazonian eagle, which was recently found nesting at this beautiful Ecuadorian national biological reserve. This also happens to be one of the easiest and most accessible places right now to look for this . Following a short drive from Limoncocha, we boarded a boat for the short ride along the Napo River to where the nest site of the Harpy Eagle is. While on board the boat, we took in Great and Snowy Egrets, Roseate Spoonbill, Large-billed Tern, Speckled Chachalaca and a cute Collared Plover during the journey.

Once we landed there, we got the news from our local guide that due to exceptionally heavy rains of late, we would need to use a kayak to access the blind to view the nest. This involved only a 400-yard kayak ride. On arrival no Harpy Eagles were present, but after a while the juvenile flew into the tree and remained there until we left the area. While we waited for this immense bird to steal the show, we got to see Double-toothed and Slender-billed Kites and a Plumbeous Antbird. We were over the moon with the views of the Harpy Eagle, and suitably impressed by its considerable size, being one of the World’s biggest eagles.

We returned to the village for lunch, and then spent some time birding forest edge and secondary growth in the afternoon. There, we found Orange-backed Troupial, Short-crested Flycatcher, Grayish Saltator, Gray-breasted Crake, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl and Chestnut- eared Araçari. Also, just before our dinner and bed, we went to see Scarlet and Bare-faced Ibises and many Cattle Egrets coming to roost alongside the road.

June 26: Limoncocha to WildSumaco Lodge. Today was our last day of the Harpy Eagle Extension and last day in the Amazon basin. However, fortunately some of the group wanted to have a longer trip, and so we continued with another extension into the Andes. Therefore, we did some final birding near Limoncocha before leaving for the Andes in the afternoon. During the morning we saw the Crimson-crested and Spot-breasted Woodpecker, Great Antshrike, Hook-billed Kite, Gray-crowned Flatbill and had great looks at Masked-crimson Tanager, Brown Jacamar, Yellow-bellied Dacnis, Orange-fronted Plushcrown, Swallowing Puffbird, Green and Ringed Kingfishers, Plum-throated Cotinga and Chestnut-fronted Macaw.

Great Antshrike from Limoncocha

After a taste of local food in Limoncocha, a fish dish called Maito, it was time to say goodbye to one of the participants, who was heading back to Quito. The rest of us continued on to WildSumaco Lodge in the foothills of the Andes, several hours drive away. We arrived late in the afternoon there, and quickly set about chalking up the hummingbirds on site, like Rufous- vented Whitetip, Napo Sabrewing, Brown Violetear, Booted Racket-tail, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Gould’s Jewelfront, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Many-spotted Hummingbird, Black- throated and Violet-fronted Brilliants, Black-throated Mango and the striking Wire-crested Thorntail, all from the lodge front porch.

Golden-tailed Sapphire at Wild Sumaco Lodge

June 27-28: WildSumaco Lodge Area. We spent two days staying at this beautiful lodge in the eastern foothills that is one of my favorite lodges in the country. The reason for this is the location, the meals, the wonderful setting, and, of course, the awesome bird species present. Unfortunately, during our stay, we experienced a lot of rain, but this didn’t stop us from birding, and while walking on their forest trails we saw species like Wing-banded Wren, Spot-backed Antbird, Blue-rumped, Golden-winged and White-crowned Manakins, Buff-throated Tody- Tyrant, Northern White-crowned Tapaculo, Spotted Nightingale-Thrush, Black-streaked Puffbird, Ecuadorian Piedtail, White-necked Thrush, and a day roosting Band-bellied Owl. We also birded along the road where we picked up a few wonderful species like Montane Foliage- gleaner, Brown-capped and Chivi Vireos, Olive-backed Woodcreeper, Green-fronted and Blue fronted Lancebills, Lafresnaye’s Piculet, Red-headed and Gilded Barbets, Blue-necked, Golden, Bay-headed, Swallow, Spotted, Yellow-bellied and Green-and-gold Tanagers, Dusky Spinetail, Purple Honeycreeper, Yellow-throated Toucan, Golden-eyed Flowerpiercer, Golden-olive and Smoky-brown Woodpeckers, Olivaceous and Rufous-naped Greenlets, Olive-chested and Ornate Flycatchers, Ecuadorian Tyrannulet, Marron-tailed Parakeet, Blackish Rail and the threatened Military Macaw flying back and forth in the area. www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] p.17 Ecuador: Amazing Amazon Tropical Birding - Trip Report (and extensions for Harpy Eagle and Andes) Jun-Jul 2021

Band-bellied Owl from WildSumaco Lodge

In addition to the trail and the road, we also visited a forest blind behind the lodge, where we picked up some good stuff like, Plain Antvireo, Peruvian Warbling Antbird, White-backed Fire-Eye, Black-billed Treehunter and quick looks of a Rufous-breasted Wood-quail too. At the feeding station we got an Ochre-breasted Antpitta, which was excellent.

June 29: WildSumaco Lodge to Cabañas San Isidro. Before leaving WildSumaco, we birded one more time along one of the lodge trails, which was extremely rewarding, with Coppery-chested Jacamar, Blackish and Common Scaled-baked Antbirds, Chestnut-crowned Gnateater, White- shouldered Antshrike, Foothill Stipplethroat, Yellow-breasted Antwren, Short-billed Antthrush, Red-billed Scythebill and Western Striolated Puffbird. After lunch we headed towards San Isidro Lodge. We arrived late in the afternoon and were welcomed by a flock of gaudy White-capped Tanagers, normally a rare and difficult species. Before supper we did a bit of birding on the lodge grounds, where we saw a few species by the hummer feeders like Collared and Bronzy Incas, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Lesser Violetear, Speckled Hummingbird, Long-tailed Sylph, and Gorgeted Woodstar. While having dinner we caught up with the “San Isidro Mystery Owl” sitting just outside beyond the porch www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] p.18 Ecuador: Amazing Amazon Tropical Birding - Trip Report (and extensions for Harpy Eagle and Andes) Jun-Jul 2021

White-capped Tanager from Cabañas San Isidro

June 30: San Isidro Lodge area. Today we birded near this beautiful lodge in the upper cloudforests of the Andes, which is one of my favorite habitats in any country. We started our activity early then took breakfast later. Unfortunately for us, it was a wet day, and so we stayed around the lodge, seeing species from the front porch like Pale-edge, Cinnamon and Golden- crowned Flycatchers, the colorful Saffron-crowned Tanager, Smoke-colored Pewee, Mountain Wren, Subtropical Cacique, Montane and Olive-backed Woodcreepers and the friendly Green (Inca) Jay. Late in the day, after lunch, we birded along the road where we picked up a few feeding flocks and birds outside of these, including Black-billed Peppershrike, Pearled Treerunner, Blue-winged Mountain-Tanager, Black-eared Hemispingus, Lemon-browed Flycatcher, Streak-headed Antbird, Rufous-crowned Tody-Flycatcher, Capped Conebill, White- tailed and Sulphur-bellied Tyrannulets, Flavescent and Streak-necked Flycatchers, Marble- faced Bristle-Tyrant, Masked Flowerpiercer, Russet-backed and Crested Oropendolas, Streaked Tuftedcheek, Blackish Tapaculo, Glossy-black Thrush, and Beryl-spangled and Black- capped Tanagers. In spite of the rain, we got quite an impressive bird list!

Pale-edged Flycatcher from San Isidro Lodge in the rain

July 1: San Isidro to Papallacta Hot Springs. Before leaving San Isidro, we had another quick birding session by the lodge before breakfast, and our birding at the nearby Guacamayos ridge. Many of the birds were similar to the day before, except for Black-crested Warbler, Gray- breasted Wood-wren and the shy White-bellied Antpitta by a forest feeding station were all new. Later in the morning we headed towards Guacamayos Ridge where we had some brief birding and saw species like, Rufous-breasted Flycatcher, Spillman’s Tapaculo, Rufous Wren, Slaty-backed Chat-tyrant, Bluish Flowerpiercer, Black-capped Hemispingus, the colorful Grass- green Tanager, Green-and-black Fruiteater and even quick looks at the exceedingly rare Greater Scythebill. Unfortunately, we had a slow morning, but we still added a few species add to our triplist. We returned to the lodge for lunch, packed up our things pack, and drove towards Papallacta Hot Springs, our next destination. However, we did see a Southern Emerald Toucanet just before we left. Once we arrived at Papallacta, which has natural hot water that comes from the mountains, we enjoyed a relaxing bath at the private pools in front of our cabins. After such a wonderful time we ended up our day with some glasses of wine, bottles beer, and a delicious dinner.

White-bellied Antpitta from San Isidro Lodge

July 02: Papallacta Hot Springs, Cayambe-Coca National Park, and Guango Lodge. Today, it was our last day of the trip, and as some of the group were getting tired by now, we made this an easy day. We began by birding the hotel grounds where we saw Cinereous Conebill, Black Flowerpiercer, Spectacled Redstart, White-throated and Tawny-rumped Tyrannulets and Shinning Sunbeam before breakfast. Right after, we went towards Papallacta pass, in order to to get some high elevation species. On the way up, we picked up species like Yellow-billed Pintail, Andean Teal and Andean Gull. Once we arrived at the top unfortunately, we had very bad weather. It didn’t stop us birding though, and we found Tawny Antpitta, Plain-capped Ground-Tyrant, Chestnut-winged and Stout-billed Cinclodes, Variable Hawk, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Carunculated Caracara, Brown-backed Chat-Tyrant, Many-striped Canastero, White-chinned Thistletail and also got great views of Giant Conebill in the Polylepis Forest.

After a productive morning, we decided to visit Guango lodge before lunch at our hotel. Unfotunately, Guango was kind of quiet, but we saw a few species to entertain us, like Turquoise Jay, Brown-bellied Swallow, White-banded Tyrannulet, Masked Trogon and at the hummer feeders we got the Long-tailed Sylph, Chestnut-breasted and Buff-tailed Coronets, White- bellied Woodstar, Tyrian Metaltail, Speckled Hummingbird, Collared Inca and the aggressive Tourmaline Sunangel. After lunch, before our departure towards Quito airport, we had another jump into the hot pool one more time.
