Physical Characteristics of Stream Subbasins in the Hawk Creek-Yellow Medicine River Basin, Southwestern Minnesota and Eastern South Dakota By Christopher A. Sanocki Abstract Data that describe the physical characteristics of stream subbasins upstream from selected sites on streams in the Hawk Creek-Yellow Medicine River Basin, located in southwestern Minnesota and eastern South Dakota are presented in this report. The physical characteristics are the drainage area of the subbasin, the percentage area of the subbasin covered only by lakes, the percentage area of the subbasin covered by both lakes and wetlands, the main- channel length, and the main-channel slope. Stream sites include outlets of subbasins of at least 5 square miles, outlets of sewage treatment plants, and locations of U.S. Geological Survey low-flow, high-flow, and continuous- record gaging stations. Searles, Owner Leeward Solutions, LLC December 25, 2017 Bob Bryant photographs Sullivant’s Milkweed in a Scott County roadside. Sullivant’s Milkweed is uncommon, but, like other milkweeds, it attracts Monarch butterflies for egg-laying and food. Bob joined the survey in 2016 and 2017 as a field assistant and expert on the county’s flora and botanical history. The RVS occurred in two phases, with hard-surfaced roads surveyed in 2016 and gravel roads driven in 2017. Level B and C roads were not included, with only a few exceptions. The field component was completed in early September 2017. This final report contains information and conclusions based on both phases. The survey began on July 25, 2016, with training on GPS equipment.
