Kitchen and Meal Times Tiger Lily Day Nursery menus ensure that the children have a balanced nutritional meal daily. Food is prepared and cooked in our well-equipped kitchen by our Head Cook; Yvonne and Assistant Tracey. Our food is cooked and prepared with no added salt or sugar. We take into account individual dietary requirements whether it’s religious, medical or even general likes and dislikes. Snacks will usually be a variety of healthy fresh fruit, dried fruit or vegetables.

We have successfully achieved the Food & Health ‘Gold Award’ for promoting and providing healthy eating options and environmental practices as well as the Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council Award scoring of ‘4’ for the highest food hygiene rating.

Fresh drinking water is made readily available to the children throughout the day and the children are made aware of this. Children are assisted to help themselves where appropriate. Meal times are organized so that the staff are able to sit with the children. This is a great opportunity to encourage the tasting of new foods and flavours as well as enjoying the social side of meal times.

Parents are asked that if their child does bring food in; that it is clearly labelled with the child’s name, what the food is and dates. Parents are asked not to bring ‘unsafe’ items into nursery bearing in mind swapping may occur and some children have allergies.

Parents are asked to provide the day’s supply of bottled milk, (please do not prepare these, just provide the bottled cooled boiled water and the powdered milk in a separate pot) labelled; these will then be put into the fridge on arrival at nursery. Staff will then prepare and warm the bottles up as required for each child. The bottles will be emptied and washed for end of the child’s session. Reminder for parents: Bottles will need to be sterilised at home before being used again.

When babies are ready for weaning, we feel it is important that their first tastes are started within the comfort of their home. Then with their parents’ instructions we will gradually introduced them to solid food in the nursery. Wherever possible babies will be given the same foods as the older children but will be liquidised or mashed as required. Feeding utensils for babies under the age of one will be sterilised.

Meals The nursery provides the following drinks and meals throughout the day Breakfast Cereals, served with milk or water Mid-morning snack Healthy choice options served with milk or water Lunch Home-cooked meal, pudding and fresh fruit served with milk or water Afternoon Snack Healthy choice options served with milk or water Light tea Options for light snacks are but not exhaustive; selection of sandwiches, pizza, baked beans with bread and butter, soup, vegetable crudités and dips and pudding served with milk or water.

Policies and Procedures

Settling In Leaving your child for the first time can be a traumatic experience; both children and parents will need support and understanding from the nursery staff to ease this transition. With preparation the initial parting can be made easier for the child. Tiger Lily Day Nursery the following support:

➢ Visiting sessions are arranged for all new parents and children, allowing children to be phased in gradually over a two-week period. ➢ Reduced sessions and shorter days can be accommodated during this period. ➢ Parents can make several visits together to get used to the staff, surroundings and routines. ➢ Parents and children are introduced to other newcomers for support. ➢ Stressing the importance of the parents collecting children on time to avoid unnecessary stress for their child. ➢ Obtaining a clear profile of each child’s needs, likes and dislikes or special requirements. ➢ Encouraging parents to spend time with them after their day care session

Special Educational Needs Where a child has a recognised special educational need, we are happy to consider applications providing that, in discussion with the parents and any other agencies already involved with the child, it is agreed that we are able to offer a programme that will meet the particular needs of the child. Where it is felt that a child already attending the Nursery may have a previously un-stated special need, the nursery staff will determine, in collaboration with the parents, what action is necessary to meet those needs including, here appropriate, the involvement of other agencies.

Behaviour Management All children coming into the Nursery have a right to play and enjoy what is on offer without fear of intimidation, harassment or physical or verbal abuse. We strive to promote behaviour, which encourages respect for each individual, co-operation with each other and opportunities for play and adventure within a safe and caring environment. Racism, sexism and other kinds of discriminatory behaviour will be challenged and will not be allowed to continue within the play setting.

Children are encouraged to adopt acceptable standards of behaviour. There is a strong emphasis on developing social behaviour within a group and basic good manners. Sanctions may be applied in cases of unacceptable behaviour which take into account the age and stage of development of the child concerned.

Corporal punishment has no place in the Nursery. If behavioural problems do arise we discuss the matter with parents and a workable solution is sought, in certain circumstances internal assessments will be undertaken and used to and form part of an action plan.

Safeguarding Children We have a robust Safeguarding policy at the nursery. The aim of this policy is to ensure the protection of all of the children in our care. We have a statutory duty to ask you about any injuries your child may have when they attend nursery and keep a written record. This does not mean that we suspect you or your family of abuse. We will also record any concerns and if necessary pass these concerns onto Social Services or the Child Protection

Unit. In line with our policy we will inform parents about the information we are keeping on their child or passing onto Social Services.

“Staff have a good understanding of their role and responsibilities, with particular regard to protecting children in their care from abuse and neglect” Ofsted 2018.

Equal Opportunities The Nursery is fully committed to a policy of equality of opportunities and we treat the children in our care with equal concern to meet their specific needs with regard to their religious persuasion, racial origin and cultural and linguistic background, sex and any disability.

“Children learn to respect people’s differences as they explore and celebrate their own cultures and beliefs and those of others” Ofsted 2018.

Parents We never forget that parents are the first educators of their children. Parental involvement in all aspects of the Nursery is encouraged and parents should feel free to discuss any problems with the staff or visit the Nursery at any time during opening hours. Parents of older children will be encouraged to assist and support children with their reading, and other work. We may also ask parents to contribute to the work of the Nursery by contributing to topic work any specific skills or properties that they may have to assist the children in achieving a greater knowledge and understanding of the world. This may be particularly relevant in expanding their appreciation of other cultures as well as people and places that have significance in their own lives.

The door has a keypad entry system and therefore is locked at all times and can only be entered by ringing the doorbell and a member of staff opening the door. ➢ CCTV to the front of the building ➢ A member of staff will register your child upon their arrival. ➢ A collection password is asked for and recorded on the Registration Form and used for late collections or if a different unauthorised person is collecting your child. ➢ When completing the Registration Form, you are asked to provide details of authorised people that may collect your child from Nursery. Collection of Children Only permanent members of staff can open the main nursery door. This is for your child’s safety. We have a keypad entry system and strictly adhere to our security policy, offering you added reassurance. Your child will not be allowed to leave with anyone other than the named people on your application form unless you have made special arrangements with the nursery manager.

All children should be collected promptly at the end of their session. We operate a late pick up charge scheme; if a child is collected after their session ends a late fee of £15.00 per fifteen minutes or part thereof will be charged. The charge helps to cover additional staffing costs incurred. The nursery has an obligation to stay with any uncollected child at the end of the day, until that child is collected. If your child is not collected on time, our legal liability relation to the staff: ratio will be infringed as two members of staff must remain at the nursery until the last child has been collected. The late collection charge is intended as a penalty to discourage late pick up, not as a fee for additional services.

Holidays We are open for 51 weeks of the year, closing approximately for 1 week at Christmas and all Bank Holidays. Full fees are to be paid for all of the weeks that the nursery is open regardless of Bank holidays, family holidays or illness. In exceptional circumstances, there may be additional closure days for staff training, but you will be given plenty of notice for these days. No fees will be charged for these training days. We would be grateful if you would notify the management of your holiday dates.

Confidentiality Although all records and registration documents are kept confidential, parents will have ready access to the files and records of their own children. Under the Children’s Act 1989, we have an obligation to release these files to the local authority if requested.

Children are encouraged to wash their hands as part of the daily routine. ➢ Parents are asked to keep their children at home if they have an infection and to inform the Nursery as to the nature of the illness so that staff can inform other parents, maintaining confidentiality at all times.

Illness If your child is unwell and unable to attend nursery, we ask that a parents/carer phone us by 9am so that we can register the absence.

We are aware that children at this age frequently catch sniffles and colds and it would be impractical to exclude children from nursery from every runny nose, however there are certain illnesses that we must exclude from Tiger Lily Day Nursery for the protection of the other children and staff.

The Nursery follows the guidelines of the Health Protection Agency. Children with chest, throat or ear infections must be kept off nursery for at least 2 hours after receiving medical attention.
