ANNUAL QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT OF THE IQAC

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, applied for re-accreditation by NAAC in the month of July 2009 and peer team visited the college on 21st – 23rd Jan 2010. The NAAC has awarded B Grade on 4 point scale to the college in the month of March 2010. The plan of action chalked out by IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement:

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College got reaccredited with B grade on 4 point scale in 2010 by NAAC Accreditation Board. According to the Peer team – “Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi conveys an optimistic message of how a growth oriented educational Institution can bring about rapid transformation of an extremely backward rural area through a dynamic process of education and cultural activities …… cherishing and cultivating a chain of academic institutions of different hues, but serving the basic cause of educating minds, is indeed rare among Indian Affiliated Colleges”.

The Vision & Mission statements of the college and the encouraging words of Peer team have made the IQAC members of the college to chalk-out a detailed plan of action for the academic year under report.

IQAC requested teachers to increase their participation in various forums, which directly or indirectly involve in the designing and updating of the curriculum. As far as the student support and progression is concerned, besides strengthening Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association, IQAC felt that students should be made employable through career counseling and placement assistance. Likewise it was decided to improve the organization by obtaining student feedback regarding the teaching staff of the college.

IQAC decided to take following steps for the quality enhancement among students:

 Conducting periodical tests, seminars for the Students.  Taking Students to the Industries to have interaction.  Arranging students‟ visit to the Courts, Zilla Panchayat and other Local Government offices.  To arrange remedial courses to the needy students.

7  Conducting study tours to the students.  To arrange career workshops to expose the students for career opportunities.  To organize workshops to enable the students to face interview and participate in the group discussions.  To organize quiz programmes for the improvement of General knowledge of students.  To organize special coaching camps for various sports and games.  To motivate students to participate in workshops / seminars in other colleges.

For quality enhancement of teachers, IQAC decided to encourage the teachers....

 To participate in Seminars, Workshops and Symposia.  To present papers in Seminars, Workshops and Symposia.  To conduct minor/major research projects with the help of ICSSR, UGC, NAAC and other Agencies.  To publish articles in Journals and Newspapers.  To participate in Orientation Programmes and Refresher Courses.  To write and publish text books.

Achievements by the end of the year:

Students’ quality enhancement: The IQAC has noted that the subject Seminars, Quiz, Industrial Visit have been carried out in the year by many Departments. The IQAC has noted that HRD programmes and many other programmes by different Departments have been organized to enable the students to acquire more general knowledge and skill. IQAC is happy to observe that the remedial courses have been conducted by the faculty to the needy students. IQAC has also noted that special encouragement has been given to talented students of NCC, NSS and Sports men and women during the year.

Teachers’ quality enhancement:

The IQAC has observed that many faculty members have attended / presented papers in various Seminars, Workshops and Symposia.

Four staff members have attended Orientation Courses held at different places during the year of report.

PART – B

1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the Institution:

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi was established in 1949 by late Dr.T.M.A. Pai. It is sponsored by the Academy of General Education, Manipal and is affiliated to University. The college campus houses two Auditoriums – Nutana Ravindra Mantapa & Muddanna Mantapa (Open Air Auditorium), Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Samshodhana Kendra, Regional Resource Centre for Folk performing arts, well catalogued RRC archives, Kendra, well equipped Computer Centre, an extensive A.L.N.Rao playground and a Library with a difference – Granthaloka.

The college is a premier Institution with rich legacy in terms of facilities, equipments, staff and achievements. For six decades, the college has served as the focal point in all-round development of students of Udupi region.

The college offers B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., B.C.A., PGDCA, and part-time courses in German to the students irrespective of castes, communities, class, religion and place of birth. The college provides Mid-day meals to the needy students. The management has taken lot of efforts to support and encourage sports and extra-curricular activities like Music, NCC, NSS, Rangers, Youth Red Cross etc. The college has also organized remedial courses to the slow learners. The college is providing number of scholarships and free ships to the meritorious students.

The Computer Department conducts certificate courses during lunch hours and vacations for the benefit of the students. The Department has also organized free Internet classes for students and staff.

21. Improvement in the Library Services:

M.G.M. College houses a state of the art library. It will be open from 8.30 am. to 5.30 p.m. It is one of the biggest libraries among the affiliated college libraries of Mangalore University. The implementation of automation facilities has created a user friendly atmosphere and has been appreciated by all the students. It also serves the public, alumni and K.S.O.U. students. This year for the benefit of students an open access system has been introduced, where by a student can access any book directly from the library and can read.

As on January 21st 2010, our library collection has 89,881 books 99 periodicals/ journals and 11 dailies. This year we have provided Del-Net service, which gives an opportunity to the students and faculty to access different kinds of books that are available in different libraries in different places.

In order to familiarize the library for new comers, „know your library‟ programme was conducted in the beginning of the year. Batch wise, students were exposed to the rare books available in the library.

The Library is computerized and Internet facility is extended to the students. Students can take printout of the downloaded materials. The CD writing facility is also given to students. The library is also equipped with a new Xerox Machine.

The Students‟ feed back is taken from all the students in all the courses for all the teachers. Overall feedback is good on all the teachers. The Principal is monitoring the performance of all staff members regularly.

All members of the office staff are undergoing training in order to Computerize the office work.

26. Increase in the infrastructural facilities:

 Rs. 5 lakh has been spent for white-washing/painting the old buildings in the campus.  Rs. 3 lakh has been spent to spruce up Audio-Visual hall.  Rs. 2 lakh has been spent for the Herbal Garden & Botanical Garden.

27. Technology Upgradation:

All the Departments of the college are provided with a computer. Some departments are also provided with a printer and CD writer.

28. Computer and Internet access and training to Teachers and Students:

The Students and Teachers are getting trained to use computer and they can enroll (Both full time and part-time) as the students of Diploma course in Computer Science. Internet facility is available in the college library and college office.

29. Financial Aid to Students:

Apart from the Government Freeships and Scholarships, the college offers 120 endowment and scholarship prizes to the meritorious and deserving students. The details of different scholarships given to the students (apart from endowment) are enclosed in Annexure – 7.

14 30. Activities and support from the Alumni Association:

Apart from spreading goodwill, the Association is encouraging the students by giving a few Scholarships and Endowments.

31. Activities and Support from the Parent Teacher Association (PTA):

Apart from spreading goodwill, the Association is encouraging the students by giving a few Scholarships, Endowments and donation to Mid-day Meals‟ fund. The Association honoured the rank holders, who brought laurels to the college in the previous University Examinations 2009. Retired teachers were also honoured during the College Day Celebrations.

The College is continuously encouraging students to participate in Sports and Games. Many of our students have actively participated in various sports and games meet at University level and State-level.

Encouragement is given, by providing tracksuits and refreshments to the students during the time of rehearsals and coaching camps. Freeship has been given to the special Sportsman.

Guidance and counseling unit is functioning under the leadership of Prof. Yashawanthi Salian, Dept of commerce and Prof. Sandhya Nambiar, Dept of English.

37. Placement Services provided to students:

The Placement Cell has put Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College on the map of Campus recruitment. The cell has facilitated several placement interviews and motivated many students to be career oriented even before they get their degrees. This year we have done „POOL CAMPUS DRIVE‟ wherein, many students of the nearby colleges like Sri Bhuvanendra College-, Poorna Prajna College & Govt. College for women- Udupi, Vijaya College-Mulky, Bhandarkars College-Kundapur and SMS college- Bramhavara were also benefited.

The prominent companies who visited our campus were Fides Global Consultants Private Limited , Wipro Technologies, Mphasis, MyComputer, iGate, Infosys, Wipro Infotech, Telenetix Pvt. Ltd., Manipal and Syscomp, Udupi.

We are happy to state that more than 40 students have been selected and many short listed by different companies.

She has attended a National Seminar on „Nationality, Prof. Sandhya Nambiar, Language and Culture: Contestations in Contemporary Dept of English writing‟ on 8th and 9th Jan 2010 at St.Aloysius College, Mangalore. She has conducted a one week‟s course in spoken English for the Pre-university N.S.S. students in the month of September.

He has attended a National Seminar on ELT on 30th and 31 Dr. A. Srinivasa Rao, Jan 2010 at S.S.B.N.College, Anantapur. He is guiding 2 Dept of English Ph.D. students of Dravidian University, Kuppam.

He has given a talk on All Radio, Mangalore, under Dr. H. S. Shivaswamy, the programme, chinthana manthana. He is the Resource Department of Kannada person for the research students of Dravidian University, Kuppam, and has given a talk on Research Methodology, in Shimoga. He has been invited as resource persons for many literary functions. He is a member of the text book committee, to prepare the new language text books.

He has published a book titled ‘festivals of Karnataka’ Dr. D. R. Panduranga, published by Indian Book house, Bangalore and Department of Kannada ‘Sahrudaya Spandana Vimarsa Sankalana’ published by Mahima Prakasana, Mysore. He has edited a book of Lakshmisa‟s epic ‘Jaimini Bharatha’. He has rendered Gamaka recital and co-ordinated many programmes thoughout the Udupi District.

Mrs. Shailaja H., She was awarded M.Phil. Degree, from Annamalai Dept. of Physics University for the topic “Gamma Spectrometric Analysis of Geological Samples of Coastal Karnataka”. She has attended National Seminar on current trends in Material Science at MIT Manipal on 2nd and 3rd December 2009 and Inter National Intra Disciplinary Conference on Frontiers of Astronomy at Field Marshal K M. Kaveriappa College, Madikeri from 28th to 30th December 2009.

Sri B. Arun Kumar, He has attended National Level Workshop on „Chemistry Department of Chemistry for sustainable future‟ held at Sri Bhuvanendra College, Karkala, on 9th to 11th October, 2009. He has been sanctioned a Minor Research Project by the U.G.C. to work on the topic „Microwave Assisted Transesterification of a few available vegetables‟. The co-investigator to the project is Ms.Vidya C.

Dr. Hala Nayak, He has successfully guided two M.Phil students and Dept. of Commerce guiding one Ph.D. student. He has also guided 6 candidates for their M.B.A. projects. He has successfully completed 5 year term of office of the Director of Teacher Co-operative Bank, Udupi. He has delivered guest lectures to the students of M.S.W., at Govt. College, Thenkanediyur, Udupi. He has attended an International conference on harnessing the entrepreneurial potential of women in economic growth from 22 to 25 Jan, at Manipal.

He has worked as Chief Coordinator for the NAAC Dr. Sureshramana Mayya, preparations of this College during this academic year. He Department of Commerce co-ordinated the NAAC Visit for re-accreditation of MGM

College.

advances of SBI, Pollachi) and Mrs. Jayalakshmi, Faculty, MPM college, Manipal (Topic : A study of HRD practices prevailing in First Grade Colleges of Udupi district) were awarded M.Phil. during the year 2009 by Madurai Kamaraj University and Mrs. Ashalatha, Faculty, Government First Grade College, Sringerei (Topic: Problems and prospectus

of cashew industry – A study of Udupi district) was

awarded M.Phil. from Alagappa University.

During this academic year, he completed a research project

sanctioned by Accounting Research Foundation, Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, New Delhi and submitted the final project, namely, „Emerging Opportunities for Environmental Auditing: A Study of Large Scale Industries of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi

Community Services rendered:

NCC Naval wing:

The Naval NCC Sub Unit in MGM College entered 15th year of function after his timely Rejuvenation in 1995-1996. Our NCC Naval sub Unit is affiliated to 6 KAR Naval Unit, NCC Udupi. Lt. Prof S.R.Shet is working as ANO of the NCC unit of the college.

 This year our cadets actively participated in tree plantation in the month Aug, Boat Pulling during September – October and Blood Donation on 1st Nov 2009.

 On 15th August 2009 our college sub unit presented impressive March Past & the Guard of Honour to the Chief Guest, Principal Dr. P V Gowda. Our cadets attended Independence day Parade at Ajjarkad and got 1st prize in March Past competition.

 It is significant to note that 8 cadets got selected for attending for All India Nav Sainik Camp at Vishakpattan from 1st October to 14th October 2009.

 On January 26th 2010, our cadets presented most impressive march past and the Guard of honour to the chief guest Capt. Anand Shirali, Indian Army (our ex Cadet Captian ).

NCC Army Wing:

The N.C.C. Army wing of the college is sub-unit of 21 Kar BN N.C.C. Udupi. It has stepped into 10th year of functioning. It is working under the guidance of Mrs. Gladin, Lecturer, Dept of Commerce.

All the cadets of NCC Army wing have participated in all the community services rendered by the NCC naval unit.

NSS :

All the NSS activities are guided and monitored by Mr. Laxminarayana Karanth, Mrs. Namitha Acharya and student leaders- Mr. Prashanth Desai and Ms. Prajnashree. The activities for the year were inaugurated by Dr. Gananath Ekkar, Co-ordinator, Mangalore University on 24th July 2009.

28  A programme on „NSS orientation‟ was organized on August 22nd 2009 by Prof. Somayaji, of S.M.S College, Brahmavara.

 On September 24th, 2009 a one day University legal awareness camp for the volunteers was held. Mr. Girdhar kamath and Sudhakar Shettigar were the resource persons.

 A talk on HIV AIDS was organised on 13th January, 2010 by Prof. Arun Kumar B, HOD of Chemistry. Students visited „The Red Ribbon Express‟ at Udupi Railway Station on 20th January, 2010.

 A trekking to Gangamoola was conducted on 7th March 2010 for 65 students.

 On 6th March, 2010 a Leadership Training by Mr. Mohammed Suhan, JCI, Udupi was organized.

 NSS Annual Camp was held at the Zilla Panchayath primary school, Padu Anjar. Mr. Manjunathayya, BEO, Udupi, inaugurated the camp. Mr. Krishna Shetty inaugurated the Shramadhan. A Volleyball court and extension of the School Ground were the Shramadan Programs. Mr. Kudi Vasantha Shetty, Ms. Poornima Nayak, Dr. Mohammed Rafiq, Sri. Shyama Bhat, Sri Mohana Kadaba, Mr. Vinaya Acharya were the resource persons for the Everyday educational programs.

Kasturba Rangers Unit:

Kasturba Rangers Unit of the College is functioning under the able leadership of Prof. Leelavathi U, Dept of commerce as the staff Advisor and Smt. Vasumathi Bhat, Dept of Sanskrit & Smt. Vanitha, Dept of commerce as Ranger Leaders. Shubha Mallya, student of second B.Com is the secretary.

 The annual activities of the unit were inaugurated on 1st Sept 2009 by Sri Shekar Alevoor, secretary of Scout association, Udupi.

 On 19th Sept 2009 , one day hiking program was organized for the benefit of the members to Naturopathy Hospital and Old Palace at PARIKA about five kilo meters from the college.

 On 24th 2009, embroidery training on mirror work was conducted with kind assistance of Smt. Sandhya of Udupi.

29  A university level Rangers and Rovers Meet was organized by the district Scouts & Guides, association, Udupi in association with Madhava pai Memorial College, Manipal on 27th & 28th February 2010.

 On 3rd March 2010 a demonstration cum training programme on knots & lashes were conducted. The resource person was Sri PrabhakarBhat, District Training commissioner, Scouts & Guides, Udupi District.

Apart from the above activities, members of the unit has also participated in campus cleaning programme, Independence Day and Republic day Parades

Youth Red Cross:

The activities of Youth Red Cross were inaugurated on 8th August 2009 by Mr. Rajeev Shetty, Vice President, District Red Cross Unit. Dr. Sharath Kumar Rao, District Secretary of Red Cross unit was the Chief Guest. Same day Blood Grouping & Blood donation camp was conducted. 112 students and 12 staff members donated the blood on that occasion.

 Volunteers of Youth red Cross unit contributed generously to the Karnataka Natural Calamities Relief Fund on 21.10.2009.

 A talk on „Diseases related to Modern Life style‟ was given by Dr. Rafiq, Chief Medical Officer, SDM Nature Cure Centre, Pareeka on 22.10.2009.

 A trekking programme to Koosalli was conducted on 7th march 2010. 65 students participated in this programme.

She won 3rd place in National level Bharathnatyam competition, Yuva Janotsav held at Bhubaneshwar in Orissa in the month of January 2010 conducted by the Department of Sports and Youth Service, Government of India. She won 1st place in state level classical dance competition under the extra-vagenza held at Bhuvanendra College,Karkala. She got District level Independence Day award at Ajjarkad for her various performances in dance. She was awarded with the title “Natya Rani” by Mangala Sahitya Vedike, Parkala.

 Mr.Sharath of I BCom secured 2nd place in Tabla competition at University Level Competition held in Vijaya College, Mulki. He also secured 2nd place in Tabla competition held on Founder‟s day at Bhandarkar‟s college, Kundapur.

 Ms. Apoorva of III BA got 2nd place in Inter-collegiate Mangalore University level S.D Samarajya Memorial elocution competition on Gandhian thought held at Sri Mahaveera college, Moodabidri. She also got 1st place in Tulu speech competition at Taluk and District level conducted by Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and also participated in State level competition held at Sudana School, Puttur.

 Ms. Shwetha Shet of II BCA secured 2nd place in drawing at PPC Fest “Sandhyotsav” and also in Vaikunta Baliga college of law “Inchara”.

 Ms. Melissa of II BSc secured 2nd place in Statistics poll and presentation & Ms. Pallavi III BSc and Ambika III BSc won 2nd place in debate competition in “Prajna Fest” held at PPC, Udupi.

 Karthik, Rashmi, Ajay, Apoorva, Sachin, Apoorva Hegde, Vijay, Pradeep, Melissa, Sharadi, Shilpasri, Shwetha and Hamsa participated in the fest “Vidhothana” of Vidyanikethan College, Kaup and won prizes for the following competitions: 3rd place in Fashion show, Nayi mattu moole and folk dance and 2nd place in Chennamani and singing.

 Mr.Sachin P N of I BCA has been promoted to Black Belt 2nd Kyu in the Examination conducted by All India Budokon Karate Federation (AIBKF).

 ‘Manifesto 2009-10’ was held at Milagres College Kkallianpur on 20th and 21st Oct 2009. It was inter collegiate fest organized by department of Management and Commerce of Milagres college, Kallianpur. Mr Nagaprasad and Mr.Vineeth of III BCom bagged first prize in quiz. Ms. Manisha and Ms. Sadaqath won second place in Jam roadies respectively.

 An Inter college cultural fest „Samskruthi’ was held on 26th Sept 2009 at S.D.M Law college, Mangalore. Nitin Rao of III BSc secured second place in Mock press. Mr. Saleem Javed and Manjunath of III BA bagged the second place in quiz.

 The National level Inter college Fest ‘Revealer’ was held on 29th & 30th Sept 2009 at St.Agnes college, Mangalore. Mr. Mudassir Mohammed of III BCom and Faranaz of II BSc secured Second Place in the event Fund raising.

The details of the healthy practices of the Institution are as follows:

 The members of the staff submit self appraisal report every year to the management and the Joint Director of Collegiate Education. The confidential reports of The Principal submitted to the management help to maintain the required standard and discipline.

 The Principal and the heads of the Departments will monitor the work done by the Staff members written in „Work Diary‟.

 The academic performance of the students is checked by adopting the following mechanism:

The Staff members will play the role of Academic Advisors of the students. The students of each class are divided into small groups of twenty or twenty five. The over all academic performance, character, discipline and participation in co-curricular activities of these groups are supervised by the concerned Academic Advisors. The cumulative record is the document maintained by the Academic Advisor. This document is signed by the Academic Advisors and forwarded to Parents/Guardian/Warden to appraise them of the students performance.

 Two tests are conducted to equip the students for the University Semester Examinations and also for the calculation of Internal Assessment marks. Proficiency prizes are awarded on the basis of these examinations and this inspires the students to perform better in Final Examinations.

 Parent – Teacher meet is organized twice a year in order to provide an open platform for free and healthy interaction.

 The Staff Council consisting of Heads of Departments helps the Principal to take decisions regarding academic matters, examinations, co-curricular activities etc.

 TQM & HRD Center of MGM College conducted several programmes keeping in view of personality development of students. Mr Sadaqath of final BCom was the Secretary of this Club. Some of the progrmmes conducted during the year focused on public speaking, Basic Ingredients, types of speeches and practical sessions on public speaking. Leadership training focusing on self esteem self discovery, attitude and self-development by Dr. S R Mayya and a number of other personality development programmes by Dr. Puthy Vasanth Kumar were conducted.

47  10 days NSS Camp is organized annually to provide the enrolled students an opportunity to interact with society in the context of social service, like road construction, extension of School grounds etc. The value of life close to nature becomes a value in practice.

 The rules and regulations of the college for the students include the dress code for boys and girls. Decent and un-provocative dress is a must for the students. Uniform has been made compulsory for the I year degree students from this academic year.

 The college starts with prayer ‘elli manakalukirado...... ’

 Vadiraja Vidyarthini Nilaya – Ladies Hostel:

We have 181 inmates in the Ladies Hostel. From time to time various programmes and talks have been held in this academic year for the all round personality development of the students. Yoga classes have been held once in a week. The inmates have been very active participants in the various co-curricular activities of the college.

 Mid-day Meals scheme:

The Mid-day Meals Club of the College has been providing free meals to the under privileged students of the college. We are happy to acknowledge the voluntary contribution made by various donors towards the Mid-day Meals‟ Fund. This year 132 students have been the beneficiaries of this scheme.

 MG.M. College Students’ Co-operative Stores:

The Co-operative store of the college provides books and stationery to the students at reasonable rates. Prof. Dr. P V Gowda as the Honorary president, Prof. Dr. N Hala Naik as the Honorary Secretary with the support of the Directors from among the teachers and student representatives has ably managed the working of the Co-operative Stores. A certain percentage of the profits from the sales is set aside every year for the granting of scholarships to deserving students. Mr. Udaya, the clerk is the in-charge of the Stores in conducting the business. The accounts of the stores are audited by the Government auditors of the Co-operative Department from time to time.

 Department of German:

The activities of the Department of German have been on a low-key this year owing to the difficulty of finding a common free-hour during the week days. Hence classes were conducted on Sundays from 9 to 12 for the beginners and 2 to 5pm for the advanced students. Even this schedule is affected sometimes by special classes in other subjects. 17 students have enrolled for the certificate course in German, 2 for the Level 2 course and 2 for the level 3 course.

The certificate and Junior Diploma Exams were held at the Department level in Aug. 2009.

 Students Welfare Council:

We have a promising and enthusiastic band of members in the Students Welfare Council this academic year. The SWC under the guidance of Prof. Dr. N Hala Naik, Student Welfare Officer and two Chief Staff Co-ordinators namely Prof. Radhakrishna & Dr. H.S. Shivaswamy, helped in conducting the various activities. On 16th & 17th a unique MGEM UTSAV an Inter Collegiate Fest was held involving all the departments.

 Science club:

The science club of M.G.M College is under the guidance of Prof. Kusuma Kamath. The secretaries are Mr. Bipin Shetty and Miss Divya M of final B.Sc.

On 25th July 2009, Dr. N S Rajaram, a famous historian, mathematician and also a scientific advisor to NASA gave a talk on „Science Sheds Light on Ancient India‟

On 27th July 2009, Mr. Anirudh an alumnus of M.G.M. college studying in Indian Institute of science, Bangalore interacted with the students about „Scholarships and higher studies at Indian Institute of Science‟

International year of Astronomy was celebrated jointly with APTMU on 11th September, 2009. Dr. S Chatterjee an Astrophysist from Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore spoke on the topic „Landmarks in Astronomy‟.

On 30th September Ms. Dhanya Sunil from the Dept of Chemistry of MIT, Manipal, released the chemistry in house bulletin „CRYSTAL‟ and spoke on the topic „acquiring scientific temper‟.

M.G.M college jointly with Karnataka Science and Technology Academy, Karnataka Rajya Vignana Parishat and Dept of Collegiate Education, Bangalore organized a Science exhibition competition for under graduate students of Mangalore zone about „Protect the Planet Earth‟ on 29th and 30th December 2009.

Dept of Mathematics organized a Karnataka Regional Mathematics Olympiad Training program from 20th Jan 2009 to 24th Jan 2009 for PUC and high school students of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Prof. A Jayaram, Dr. Ramesh from M.I.T. Manipal, Dr Sudhakar Adiga from M.I.T. Manipal were the resource persons.

 IT Club:

The IT club activities were organized by the staff advisor Prof. Vishwanath Pai, Head of the Dept of Computer science along with the secretaries Mr.Sumanth Acharya of final B.Sc and Nithin Shetty of final B.C.A.

The activities of this club were inaugurated on 7th August 2009 by a talk on `Hacking‟ by Mr Srikanth Shenoy, Partner, My Computer, and consultant Sun Micro Systems, USA.

The IT Club organized an interaction with the students who were placed through the placement cell of the college. The students were Ms Arpitha from Infosys, Mr Akshay from Accenture and Ms Shilpa from TCS.

Aptitude test training classes were conducted for the final year students of BCA and BSc by the staff members of the Computer Science department.

The Arts Club has been functioning actively under the guidance of Prof. Gurudeva and with the assistance of the Secretary, Ms Fiona Mendonza, Final BA.

The Club conducted a talk on „Women‟s empowerment‟ by Prof. Dr. Sulochana Narayan, Dept of Political Science, Besant College, Mangalore on 28th August 2009.

On 2nd October 2009, Ku Shi Haridas Bhat Memorial intercollegiate essay competition was conducted on the topic “India of my vision by 2020.”

The Club conducted a survey regarding mental health status of 400 respondents.

 Commerce club:

The commerce club of M.G.M is functioning under the guidance of Prof. U . Leelavathi. The secretaries are Mr. Abid M final B.Com and Miss Preneta of final B.Com.

The activities of the commerce club were inaugurated on 21 August 2009 by sri Muralikrishna Tantry an alumnus and credit analyst, Treasury department, Abudhabi.

Under the auspices of commerce club, an exclusive QUIZ contest in Commerce was held on 4th October 2009.

On 31st October 2009 nearly 100 students from first and second year B.Com actively participated in a Industrial Visit to Udaya steels and Manipal Fishnets.

A Guest Lecture by Sri Sripab Shastry, Retd. DGM, Syndicate Bank, Manipal was organized on 30th January 2010, for the benefit of the members of the club on the topic: Global Meltdown – Its impact on Banking, World Economy & India

On 20th February 2010,the second Industrial Visit was organized for the first year B.Com students to Commercial Printing Division of manipal press

 Literary and fine arts club:

This club has been functioning under the able and efficient guidance of Mr. Manjunath Bhat with the assistance of the secretary Miss.Vanditha V Bannanje of Final B.C.A.

Various competitions for the annual day were conducted on 8th and 9th March 2010.

To commemorate 500th year of Pattabhisheka of Sri Krishna Devaraya various competitions such as elocution, essay and drawing were conducted.

Training from a renounced vocalist, composer Mr. M S Giridhar from Bangalore was given to our students on 9th and 11th March 2010.

 Sports club:

The staff advisors of the sports club for the academic year 2009-2010 were Mrs. Jayashree Nayak and Mr. Sathish Hegde. The secretaries Mr. Ranjith Salian and Ms. Reshma assisted them.

Volleyball tournament „M.G.M Trophy‟ was held on 26th Feb 2010.

The college volleyball team for men won the runners-up in the Lions Club Invitation volleyball tournament held at Udupi. They were the winners in the Invitation volleyball tournament held at Yennehole.

The team emerged runners in the M.G.M Trophy 2010 an intercollegiate Floodlit volleyball tournament.

The college organized the Mangalore University Inter collegiate weight lifting and Best Physique Championship.

 Sagrisentinal – Kannada wall magazine:

Under the guidance of Prof. Sandhya Nambiar and student coordinator Ms Prarthana Shenoy and Ms Priya, articles, poems, drawings and paintings were collected from students regularly and put up on the college wall magazine housed in the old block.

The best among them will be published in the college magazine.

 Vadiraja Kanakadasa Music Festival

Vadiraja Kanakadasa Music Festival was held on 13th March at Muddana Mantapa. Santha Bhadragiri Achuta Dasa rendered Harikatha. A dance recital, ‘Kanaka Darshana’, was performed by Kiran Subramanyam. A classical Music concert was given by Vidushi Bombay Jayashree and Party, Channai. It is has been conducted for the past 31 years, and this is 32nd year of Celebrations.

 Gandhian Study Centre:

Gandhian Study Centre has the following objectives –

. To encourage to do research on life and works of „Gandhiji‟.

. To conduct seminars/workshops/lectures on „Gandhiji‟.

. To collect books written on „Gandhiji‟.

. To organize Quiz/Debate Competitions on „Gandhiji‟ for the students of schools and colleges.

. To translate English and Gujarathi books written on „Gandhiji‟ to Kannada.

. To conduct programmes as directed by the executive committee.

„Gandhi ideals are more relevant now than ever before‟, said Writer and Journalist, Mr. Ramzan Darga. He was speaking on „Gandhi and Human relationships, on Oct 2nd on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi Celebrations, held under the auspices of Gandhi Adhyayana Kendra. He said that „people should themselves analyze and put into practice the ideals of Gandhi. However, such activities should not be confined to Oct 2nd and respect for Gandhi‟s thoughts had increased in recent times because of the global economic meltdown. Gandhiji‟s teachings emphasized the importance of unity, harmony, and human relationships‟.

He also said that „remembering Gandhi is nothing but self-criticism‟.

A Bhajan program was also conducted before the meeting.

 K.S.O.U.:

The Study Centre of M.G.M. College Udupi of Karnataka State Open University Manasagangotri, Mysore attracts several students in and around the district, as well as those outside Karnataka State for studying different courses as B.A., B.Com, B.Lib., BSIT, M.A., M.Com., M.B.A., MSIT, M.Tec., M.Lib., and different Diploma and Certificate courses.

More than 2500 students have been registered to take examinations at the end of this academic year.

The Centre organizes Contact Programmes (Short duration) every year, as directed by the K.S.O.U. of Mysore, from time to time. The centre offers help and encouragement to needy students belonging to various classes of degree students during their studies.

 Science Model Exhibition Competition.

In connection with Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, Science-model exhibition for the students who are coming under Mangalore University, in association with The Karnataka Science and Technology Academy, K.R.V.P., Collegiate Education, was held on 29th and 30th Dec 2009. The theme of the exhibition was „Save the planet Earth‟. C.D.Patil, honorary secretary of Karnataka Rajya Vignana Parishat was the chief guest on that occasion. He expressed the lack of concern on the part of the students to study basic Science and opined that it was detrimental to the development of the nation. K.N. Ramesh, AC of Kundapur, inaugurated the exhibition. 14 colleges participated in the exhibition. Our college bagged 3 prizes in different categories.

 NAAC Peer Team Visit.

A three member NAAC peer team comprising, Prof. Naresh Dadhich, Vice- chancellor of Vardhman Universiy, Kota, Rajasthan, Prof. Madan Mohan Chaturvedi, Department of Zoology, University of Delhi, and Dr. M.M.Boominathan, Principal of Bishop Heber College, Tiruchirapalli, visited our college from 21st to 23rd Jan 2010 for the reassessment. The team visited and inspected all the departments, ladies hostel, playground, R.R.C. and Yakshagana Kendra. They also interacted with the old students, parents and the present students. They complimented the co-curricular, extra-curricular activities and the progress achieved by the college over a period of 60 years.

 Diamond Jubilee Festival :

Late Dr. T M A Pai, under the aegis of Academy of General Education, Manipal founded MGM College as the first institution of higher education. In the history of the college, this academic year is a landmark year, which celebrated Diamond Jubilee. Multifarious activities have been conducted for the students through out the year and the Diamond Jubilee Festival was celebrated from 12th March to 15th March 2010 in a befitting manner.

There was an Educational exhibition arranged for the benefit of students and public, which included exhibition of artifacts relating to Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Home-science, Astronomy, Anatomy (KMC) etc, exhibits from NAL, Forest Department, Department of Agriculture, Sericulture, Animal Husbandry etc, Photographs depicting the history of the college, NCC camp area, Changes ushered in higher education etc..... The programme included speeches by well known personalities like Rajarshi Dr D Veerendra Hegde and others. The light music & Bhajans by the international fame Mr Suresh Wadkar was well appreciated by all. The present students, Alumni and the public enjoyed the literary & music festival. The online chatting programme with MGMites around the globe using modern web technology was also arranged during the festival.

RASHTRAKAVI GOVIND PAI SAMSHODHANA KENDRA, UDUPI :

Sediyapu Award 2009 : The Annual Sediyapu Award was presented on June 6, 2009 to the known researcher & historian Dr A.V Narasimha Murthy, Mysore retired Professor of Mysore University. The programme was jointly conducted with Karkala Sahitya Sanga, Karkala. A special lecture was delivered by Dr N.S Taranath, Mysore on the subject – The three episodes of Mahabharatha. The poems of late Sediyapu were rendered by Sri Chandra Sekhara Kedlaya.

A symposium on Bhumi Geetha, of poet Gopalakrishna Adiga was conducted on July 4, 2009. Dr Ramachandra Deva gave the keynote address. Prof Pattabhi Ranga Somayaji, Smt Jyothi Guruprasad and Sri G. Rajshekar reacted to the address. On this occasion Prof Ramdas, who wrote „a Praveshika to Bhumi Geeta’ was felicitated. Sri Ambatanaya Mudradi, Dr H. Shantharam were on the Chair.

Tributes were paid to Pattammal and Gangubai under the joint auspices of Rashtrakavi Govind Pai Samshodhana Kendra, Kanakadasa Samshodhana Peetha and Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, at M.G.M College, Udupi on 2nd August, 2009.

In the Kadengodlu Memorial Lecture delivered under the auspices of Govind Pai Samshodhana Kendra on 9th August, 2009 well known journalist Sri Jayanth Kaikini surveyed the present scenario of Journalism and regretted that the sense of social responsibility is generally lacking in today‟s world of journalists. The young poet K. Govind Raju was awarded the 2009 Kadengodlu Poetry Award.

Dr Hampa Nagarajaiah delivered on erudite Lecture on ‘Vaddaradhane’, the ancient Kannada Prose work on 29th Aug 2009. On the same day Dr. Nagararajaiah was presented with the Taltaje Keshava Bhat Award instituted by the Kendra with the endowment granted by the heirs of the late scholar Taltaje Keshava Bhat.

The Kanaka Adhayayana Peetha of the Kendra in collaborate Paryaya Sri Puthige Matha, Department of Kannada & Culture, Udupi District Administration and Academy of General Education held a five day Kanaka Jayanthi Festival from 1st to 5th Nov. 2009. The venue for the inaugural session was Rajangana, Sri Krishna Matha, Udupi. Under the presidentship of His Holiness the Swamiji of Sri Puthige Matha, Honourable Home Minister of Govt. of Karnataka Dr V S Acharya, inaugurated the session. The session was adorned with the presence of His Holiness Sri Raghumanya Theertha of Sri Bhimana Katte Matha. A special lecture on Kanakadasa was delivered by Sri Bannanje Govindacharya. Sri K. Raghupathi Bhat, MLA, Udupi addressed the gathering. A dance recital ‘Kanakanrithya Dhare’ was also arranged. Dasavani, a Bhajan programme was presented by Sri Sheshagiridas and party, Raichur on 3rd, 4th and 5th Nov 2009. Nov 3 witnessed a Harikatha Recital contest in Kanaka Mantapa of Sri Krishna Temple. In the evening a unique ‘Antyakshari’ contest was held in reciting songs of Kanakadasa. The contest was organized by Smt. Sangeetha Balachandra.

A special programme in honour of the late T.S Satyan, artist of international fame was held on 21st Dec. 2009. An exhibition of photographs taken by Sri Astro Mohan was arranged on the occasion. Heartfelt tributes to the departed soul were offered by Sri A Ishwaraiah. The Udupi District Artist‟s Forum collaborated with RG Pai Kendra in organizing this programme.

Vishwa Tulu Sammelana: Two day Tulu Festival was held on 21st and 22nd Nov 2009 by Rastrakavi Govind Pai Samshodhana Kendra of M.G.M. College in collaboration with several organizations and individuals of Udupi region as a forerunner to the final phase of World Tulu Sammelana which was held from 10th to 14th Dec at Ujire. A week earlier the members of the Dharmasthala Rural Development Project of Udupi joined together to organize a huge folk games festival on the ALN Rao grounds of M.G.M College.

A literary session in commemoration of the Birth centenary of the late M V Seetharamaiah was held on 6th Feb 2010, in the presence of several writers. The Key note address was delivered by Dr P V Narayan, President of BM Sri Memorial Foundation, Bangalore. Dr. G B Harish spoke on the life and works of M V Seetharamaiah. Dr. Na. Geethacharya spoke on Ancient Manuscripts and MVS. The programme was presided over by Dr Taltaje Vasantha Kumar.

A unique programme in honour of Prof. A.K Ramanujan was held on 6th Feb in collaboration with Rathabeedi Geleyaru Udupi.

YAKSHAGANA KENDRA, UDUPI:

Ku.Shi Commemoration, 2009 : The founder Director of the Centre, Prof. K.S Haridas Bhat was remembered for his outstanding work in the field of Folklore in a commemoration programme on 22nd Aug. 2009.

Annual Day of Yakshagana Kendra, April 25, 2009 : Students of both I year and II years of 2008-09 presented the final day programme on April 25, 2009. Dr. Shantharam H was on the chair and he distributed the certificates to the outgoing students of the Kendra. On this occasion we honoured our founder Guru Sri Hiriadka Gopal Rao on his

57 completing 90 years of age and also two members of the newly formed Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Akademy, Sri Murali Kadekar and Krishnamurthi Tunga. Yakshagana Saptotsava, May 10 to 16, 2009 : Dr Bhaskarananda Kumar , a veteran artiste of Badagu style is our well wisher and a casual artiste performing with our troupe. He is known for his mature presentation of characters like Ravana, Kamsa, Vali etc. He is in his sixties. On that occasion the art lovers of Udupi planned to honour him. Therefore the Kendra joined hands with other organizations of Udupi to organize a week long festival where each day a character was delineated by Dr Bhaskarananda Kumar who stole the show.

Yakshagana Kendra received a prestigious invitation from National Centre for Performing Arts and Dept. of Cultural Affairs, Govt. of Maharashtra. The performance held on 23rd January and the demonstration on the following day was a great success. Dr. Vyasarao Ninjoor helped us as our spokesman and introduced Yakshagana to the audience.

The performance of Yakshagana Kendra troupe was highly applauded at the Natya Samaroh festival organized by the National School of Drama on 5th Nov. 2009 at Nazrul Kalakshetra, Agartala. Amba Pratijna in the ballet style presented by Yakshagana Kendra, was regarded as the best performance.

It was a great day for the Kendra when the Yakshagana troup participated in a UGC sponsored National Level Seminar on ‘Dashavathar and Yakshagana – a Folk Wealth’ organized by Rao Saheb Gogate College of Commerce and Smt Saraswathi Bai Ganshat Walke College of Arts, Sawanthawadi.

A workshop in Yakshagana dance and acting was held for high school students of the Udupi District on 27th and 28th of Feb 2010. The two day workshop involved 154 High school students and was a great success.

Guru Sanjeeva Suvarna was honoured on different occasions by different organizations during this year. The 55 year old artiste is one of the best exponents of Badaguthittu Yakshagana of the present day.

Book Release and Launching of Website, 28.12.2009 : It was a great day in the history of the Kendra when 5 books on folk literature and culture were released by reputed folklore scholar Prof B A Viveka Rai, former Vice Chancellor of Hampi Kannada University and Karnataka State Open University, Mysore.
