Once you reach the main building, you’ll notice that it is a few steps below the level of the parking lot and sidewalk, because Ishnala is built into the side of a steep hill overlooking Mirror Lake. The building itself is comprised of logs stained a dark brown with matching brown roof and trim. The overall effect is that the building is barely noticeable through the surrounding trees. Once you step inside, the scene becomes complete. Like the exterior, the interior appears to be comprised of virtually all natural elements. Flagstone flooring, rustic log walls, and the original fireplace dating back to the 1800s are just a few of the details that make this place truly unique. Ishnala does not accept reservations and, as we’ve learned, waiting can be part of the supper club experience. This place is incredibly popular and seating is somewhat limited, so either come very early (they open at 4:00 PM on weekdays and 2:30 bar/3:30 seating on weekends) or be prepared to spend some quality time with your dining companions. When you check in at the host station, you’ll receive a remote buzzer that will notify you when your table is ready. While you wait, grab a cocktail and check out your surroundings. The bartenders are top-notch here; a combination of professional, friendly, and cheerful, and very good at making drinks. The cocktails are incredible. The old fashioneds may have even overtaken the top position on my list of the best (but further testing is required to be certain, of course). The Bloody Mary served at Ishnala is also tasty, and visually impressive as well. The skewer of pickles, olives, pepperoni, and cheese cubes is topped with a large shrimp,

Although he played some sketchy places in the early days, none of them were in Wisconsin, he said. When asked for his favorite memories of shows in the state, he couldn’t pick just one. Thorogood has loved them all, even though he and his band are banned in Madison. It seems they were a bad influence on the wild crowds that pillaged and plundered the city’s infamous Halloween celebrations back in the day. “We played there on a Halloween a couple of times … you know Madison on Halloween got on ‘60 Minutes’ as the most outrageous Halloween party – more than New Orleans, more than New York City, more than San Francisco,” said Thorogood. “It’s a phenomenon. So, the founding fathers and the people who work for the city commerce and all that came through and said, ‘Look, we like George’s band, but they’re not playing in this town anymore.’ And we said, ‘Why?’ And they said, ‘That’s like throwing kerosene on a bonfire.’ As much as we love Madison, they said, “Nope, not you guys.” (laughs) Known for blowing the roof off of just about every joint they’ve ever played, George Thorogood and The Destroyers have carved out their own special place in rock history, putting out 16 revered studio , including six that went Gold and two Platinum records for labels such as Rounder Records, EMI and Capitol. 3. Great River Road

By ANASTASIA PENCHI (Courtesy of La Crosse County Convention and Visitors Bureau) There are many sites you shouldn’t miss in Western Wisconsin. We have tree-filled coulees and deeply-carved, lush river valleys that are home to numerous types of birds and wildlife. We are home to artisans with the talent to create tasty varieties of craft beer and cheeses. We have a river system that is crucial to the commodities trade and was made famous by the works of Mark Twain. Plenty of these sites are along Wisconsin’s Great River Road, which is a 250-mile stretch of Highway 35 running adjacent to the Mississippi River from Kieler, Wis., in the south, to Prescott in northern Wisconsin. For a “Can’t Miss” experience, start your tour at one of these locations:

Beauty in God’s Country You don’t have to be Catholic to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, but you can always convert if you want to. The Shrine started as a 70-acre donation from the Robert and Lucille Swing family of La Crosse and took $29 million to finish in 2008. It now encompasses about 100 acres and comes complete with a restaurant and gift shop. Those familiar with the loveliness of the hilly woodlands and meandering trout streams of La Crosse County can attest to the spiritual musings that come when you visit a place like this. And don’t worry about accessibility — they have a fleet of golf carts and will zip visitors around without delay. Go take the Rosary Walk and become inspired. Show how little or how much Spanish you retained in school by attending Spanish Mass at the Shrine Church. There is even a traditional Latin Mass for those who remember that era.

the Potosi Brewing Company became the fifth largest brewery in Wisconsin, and eventually distributed beer across the nation. The brewery survived prohibition, but closed in 1972. A non-profit reopened it in 2008 after a $7.5 million restoration. Nowadays it’s also home to the National Brewery Museum, which is a spot worthy of a visit from Frank Fritz and Mike Wolfe from the “American Pickers” television show. Advertising signs, beer bottle collections and other brewery-related collectibles can be seen there. Who can complain about drinking beer when you are also supporting the local economy?

In Wisconsin, it’s all about the cheese Nelson Cheese Factory no longer makes its own cheese, but it did for more than 100 years. Now this business sells a variety of cheeses made in Wisconsin, as well as cheese that’s made in other parts of the world. Is fresh Mozzarella your weakness? Or maybe it’s Apple Smoked Cheddar? Perhaps you just want to sit outside in the sunshine while you drink some wine and snack on a cheese and sausage plate? It’s possible to go there just to take home some German style sausages and tapenade from the deli. And I’m sure the kids won’t mind eating ice cream while you order gift boxes for family members living down south. You know Wisconsin cheese is what they really want from Midwesterners during the holidays.
