The Jackson 5/The Jacksons Research Paper Joseph Walter Jackson met Katherine Scruse at a nightclub when he was performing with his band “The Falcons”. They later got married and had 10 kids together, Brandon, died a stillborn, being Marlon’s lost twin brother. The Jackson Brothers loved music and one day Tito, who was playing his father’s guitar, not only without permission but without Joseph’s knowing broke a string, once the string was fixed and after a beating on Tito, he told him to play, and Joseph was impressed, he then went and bought Tito his own guitar. Soon after that Jackie and Jermaine had interest in Singing and Jermaine was bought a Bass Guitar. They then started the group “The Jackson Brothers”, with Marlon on congas, and Michael on tambourine, they then went and started practising and Michael became an official member, once his mother Katherine heard him singing while Joseph was at work. They then started entering competitions, winning most of them. They then changed their name to “The Jackson 5” and started performing at Theaters and Strip Clubs. They then signed to Steeltown Records and recorded several songs, one being “Big Boy” which became popular in the area. Joseph had became friends with Gladys Knight and she told them to audition to Motown, but they were shot down, and continued touring, winning an Apollo Theater competition they then went and auditioned this time and actually made it, they were signed to Motown Records, Joseph and the five Jackson boys moved to Los Angeles, half living with Berry Gordy Jr, the other half living with Diana Ross, Michael being one of them living with Diana. They then started the process making albums, between May and August they recorded their first album, “Diana Ross Presents The Jacksons” They then recorded their second album ABC, they then started playing shows, they played the Ed Sullivan Show. Then went on tour, playing in LA, Japan, anywhere and everywhere. They also released their third album, titled “Third Album”, they were large, larger than life, they were the black Beatles. They also released a Christmas album, 3 albums recorded, then released in 1970. They started releasing albums, that were not doing so well on the charts, they weren’t having the success they had earlier in their career. Their father was upset with how Motown was treating them as an act. They then left Motown. They started looking into labels to sign a contract with, they ended up signing with CBS Records/Epic Records, they started producing records with Gamble & Huff. They recorded The Jacksons, and they also recorded Goin’ Places, both did not sell so well. They then renewed their contract with Epic Records, and began working on an album that would then be known as “Destiny” they went on tour to support it, after Michael’s schedule was clear, because he was working on a solo record that would be called “Off The Wall”. The initial reaction to Off The Wall is incredible, it took several months to record. But once it was finished it happened to be very large. Michael wrote only two songs on his own, but co- wrote “Get On The Floor”. This album was largely influenced around the songs he had written for Destiny, it had the same feeling, but at the same time it wasn’t the same feeling. Michael wanted a producer that would expand him, he asked Quincy Jones, to help him find a producer, but at the end, Quincy offered to produce it, and Michael said yes! They started with some songs Michael had, one of them became Don’t Stop till you Get Enough. Rod Temperton wrote three songs “Rock With You, Burn This Disco Out, & Off The Wall, they took all three of them. Michael loved all the songs he was given. Paul McCartney gave him a song that Paul had written with Michael in mind called “Girlfriend” Stevie Wonder wrote a song with Susaye Greene called “I Can’t Help It”. Michael then went back on tour with his brothers on the Destiny World Tour. After the Destiny tour, Michael and his brothers started working on their follow up record to Destiny, Triumph. They started work on the album late June 1979 and finished June 1980. It was their first Number One record since Maybe Tomorrow in 1971. They then went on tour for the record, and recorded a Live album in support of the tour and Triumph. Michael then went on to start work on his biggest record ever, Thriller. At the time they didn’t know it would be that big, but Michael knew. He had songs written for the album, and songs that he wrote. He wanted to make the biggest selling album in the world. He recorded a duet with Paul McCartney, as a thank you favor towards Paul’s contribution to Off The Wall with Girlfriend. The song was called “The Girl Is Mine”. One of the biggest hits on the album was “Billie Jean”. He then won 8 awards for the album, and began work on a new album with his brothers called “Victory”. They went on a tour that flopped, called “Victory Tour”. It was an amazing tour but it just didn’t do so great money wise. After the tour, he began work on the album called Bad. He wrote songs for that album, several more songs than the last album. He had Quincy Jones produce it again like last time. But this album would not be the same as Thriller. This album was special already, because it was his first solo follow up to Thriller. This album had many outtakes, songs that didn’t make the album, but those songs deserved to be released, which they were, 25 years later. The album took longer than Thriller, but in ways it was worth it. He recorded this album with different producers, but the actual “album” mastered version where all produced by Quincy Jones. This album would have done a lot better if it wasn’t for the hype it had, because it was the follow up to Thriller. After the album he began a tour in support of the album. After that incredible tour, he started work on an album, the album would not be remembered as much as the things that happened during that era for the album. Dangerous was released in 1991. He went on tour in 1992 in support of the album. He was then accused of things that will not be mentioned. But he used the anger from that in his next album HIStory. Then he went on tour for History, one of his greatest tour ever. He then began work on another album titled “Invincible”. He wanted to tour for that but once the 9/11 attacks happened he was not interested in it. He then began work on another album, but was canceled because more allegations. He worked on music for the many years, literally days up until his death in 2009. He died June 25th 2009, his estate has released two posthumous albums. “Michael” & “Xscape”, they both have had controversy surround them, but they are good albums. Reply to: [email protected] .

    MA 330.004 / MA430.005 /AMST 341.002 Fall 2016 Revised: 10-7-16 The Cinematic Worlds of Michael Jackson Course Description: From his early years as a child star on the Chitlin’ Circuit and at Motown Records, through the concert rehearsal documentary This is It (released shortly after his death in 2009), Michael Jackson left a rich legacy of recorded music, televised performances, and short films (a description he preferred to “music video”). In this course we’ll look at Jackson’s artistic work as key to his vast influence on popular culture over the past 50 years. While we will emphasize the short films he starred in (of which Thriller is perhaps the most famous), we will also listen to his music, view his concert footage and TV appearances (including some rare interviews) and explore the few feature films in which he appeared as an actor/singer/dancer (The Wiz, Moonwalker). We’ll read from a growing body of scholarly writing on Jackson’s cultural significance, noting the ways he drew from a very diverse performance and musical traditions—including minstrelsy, the work of dance/choreography pioneers like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, and soul/funk legends like James Brown and Jackie Wilson—to craft a style uniquely his own. Crucially, we will ask how Jackson’s shifting public persona destabilize categories of gender, sexuality, and race----in a manner that was very different from his contemporaries: notably, the recently-deceased David Bowie and Prince. Elevated to superstardom and then made an object of the voracious cultural appetite for scandal, Michael Jackson is now increasingly regarded as a singularly influential figure in the history of popular music and culture.

Even as this article is written, controversy rages not only over the cause of his death but also the legacy he has left behind. 2 Michael manifested all that we loved and loathed of our humanity – a desire to restore the innocence of the world and yet a dark inclination towards deviant transgressions. He was very much an enigma that many imitated but few identifi ed with. Although he was a hypersensitive recluse victimized by an abusive childhood, his transformations of physiognomy caused him to be the focus of uninterrupted media attention. Only a handful of albums come anywhere close to its seismic cultural impact: the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper,” Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon,” Nirvana’s “Nevermind.” Yet “Thriller” remains, by far, the best-selling album of all time. Current estimates put U.S. sales at close to 35 million, and global sales at over 110 million. Its success is all the more remarkable given the context. In 1982, the United States was still in the midst of a deep recession as unemployment reached a four-decade high (10.8 percent). Record companies were laying people off in droves. Biographical Note by The HistoryMakers® R & B singer and songwriter Kim Lamont Owens (KEM) was born in Nashville, Tennessee. When he was young, his family moved from Nashville to the Detroit suburb of Southfield, Michigan. Owens began to explore the keyboard when he was four, and became fascinated by music in high school in the 1980s. However, upon graduation, he dealt with homelessness, addiction, and isolation from his family. Owens recovered in 1990 and took a job as a waiter at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Dearborn, Michigan. He also booked weddings and other shows that allowed him to perform original music. In February of 2001, Owens self-released his first album, Kemistry, which sold nearly 15,000 copies and piqued the interest of Motown Records. Motown signed Owens to a five-record deal in November of 2001 and re-released Kemistry in 2003.
