Image not found or type unknown Landa, Paul Joseph (1941–1997) MILTON HOOK Milton Hook, Ed.D. (Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan, the United States). Hook retired in 1997 as a minister in the Greater Sydney Conference, Australia. An Australian by birth Hook has served the Church as a teacher at the elementary, academy and college levels, a missionary in Papua New Guinea, and as a local church pastor. In retirement he is a conjoint senior lecturer at Avondale College of Higher Education. He has authoredFlames Over Battle Creek, Avondale: Experiment on the Dora, Desmond Ford: Reformist Theologian, Gospel Revivalist, the Seventh-day Adventist Heritage Series, and many magazine articles. He is married to Noeleen and has two sons and three grandchildren. Paul Joseph Landa was a religion and history professor in North America. Early Life, Education, and Marriage Paul Joseph Landa was born in Constantine Province, Algeria, on January 31, 1941, when his parents, Eugene and Emmanuele (Baldino) Landa were missionaries. A younger sister, Ruth, was his only sibling.1 The family remained in Algeria until World War II ended2 and then transferred to France, first at Marseille and later at Angers.3 In 1951 they moved yet again so that Eugene could adopt the role of superintendent of the Israel Mission.4 Later, in 1954, Eugene was appointed to be the secretary of the French Oceania Mission.5 For Paul the five major moves during the first fifteen years of his life disrupted his early schooling, but he endured the circumstances without any apparent disadvantage. When he was sixteen he enrolled at the Australasian Missionary College (AMC), 1957, and repeated his last year of academy level education in order to be sure of his readiness for college level studies. -

"Tumbleweed" … that was it because he always looked as if rolled across the prairie somewhere. He was good. One of the things I learned from him was that you should always ask questions. "You never know less than when you started," was his favorite saying. We'll over the last few days, I have asked a lot of questions. And my question is: what have I learned? It was Tuesday evening in April 2003 and Peter Caswell and his good friend, Alan Dawes, were having a well-earned latte at the local Starbuck's. This was their regular racket ball night and they had played together virtually every Tuesday since they were roommates in college. Peter continued: As I mentioned a couple of weeks back, I received a call from a guy who does business brokerage with the information that the Brustlin Bottling Company for sale. I knew Tom Brustlin when I worked for my father. He's a nice guy but he must be in his late seventies now. So, I guess he's retiring and putting the business up for sale. Anyway, I went out and took a look at it. It is old but perfectly functional. And I think he's take $250,000 for it. So, I did some research on the bottling industry and also made calls to a number of local bottlers to get a feel for what's going on in the industry. -

Pastor Rojas, director of Volunteer Ministries for the North American Division, was the principal speaker for the event. The conference was the first international youth conference organised by the Adventist Church and attracted young people from more than 70 countries. Before arriving at the conference, most participants were involved in one of about 30 service projects across Thailand. According to Pastor Gilbert Cangy, director of Youth Ministries for the South Pacific Division, this was an integral part of planning this event. Statistics “What sparked the imagination of all the leaders was the notion that the conference would be located in a part of the world where there is hardly any Christian presence and that the whole exercise would be driven by service and evangelism,” he recalls. “Thailand was seen as a place that that would provide a great opportunity to make a difference for God.” Pastor Cangy reports that young people from around the world—including 170 young people from the South Pacific Division—were involved in a variety of service activities. -

Sabbath Observance Among the Akan of Ghana by Bonsu
Sabbath Observance among the Akan’s of Ghana and Its Impact on the Growth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Ghana Robert Osei-Bonsu ABSTRACT—Akan traditional religion is rooted in their custom and traditions. Sabbath rest was an integral part of Akan tradition and custom in antiquity. When the Seventh-day Adventist Church message came to the coast lands of the then Gold Coast, now Ghana, it did not make much impact until it moved to the Ashanti hinterland. The question of interest to this study is, why is the Adventist message still gaining much ground among some Akan tribes in spite of the fact that this tradition of Sabbath rest is no more practiced? Are there certain conceptual commonalities shared by the Akans and the Adventist church with respect to Sabbath observance? What role has the Akan culture played in the history and spread of Adventism in Ghana? The study concludes that Akan traditional religion and Sabbath veneration, one way or the other continue to serve as a catalyst for the spread of Adventism among the indigenes. Sports Sponsorships of Food and Nonalcoholic Beverages

Brownell, Food PhDg and Nonalcoholic Beverages BACKGROUND: abstract Food and nonalcoholic beverage companies spend millions of dollars on professional sports sponsorships, yet this form of marketing is understudied. These sponsorships are valuable marketing tools but prompt concerns when unhealthy products METHODS: are associated with popular sports organizations, especially those viewed by youth. – This descriptive study used Nielsen audience data to select 10 sports organizations with the most 2 17 year old viewers of 2015 televised events. Sponsors of these organizations were identified and assigned to product categories. We identified advertisements promoting food and/or nonalcoholic beverage sponsorships on television, YouTube, and sports organization Web sites from 2006 to 2016, and the number of YouTube RESULTS: advertisement views. The nutritional quality of advertised products was assessed. Youth watched telecasts associated with thesen sports organizations over 412 million times. These organizations had 44 food and/or nonalcoholicn beverage sponsors (18.8% of sponsors),n second to automotiven sponsors ( = 46). The National Football League had the most food and/or nonalcoholic beverage sponsors ( = 10), followed by the National Hockey League ( = 7) and Little League ( = 7). We identified 273 advertisementsn that featured food and/or nonalcoholic beveragen products 328 times and product logos 83 times (some advertisements showed multiple products). Seventy-six percent ( = 132) of foods had unhealthy nutrition scores, and 52.4% ( = 111) of nonalcoholic beverages were sugar- CONCLUSIONS: sweetened.
