    “INFINITE EARTHS”: CROSSMEDIA ADAPTATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONTINUITY IN THE DC ANIMATED UNIVERSE Alex Nader A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2015 Committee: Jeff Brown, Advisor Becca Cragin © 2015 Alexander Nader All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeff Brown, Advisor This thesis examines the process of adapting comic book properties into other visual media. I focus on the DC Animated Universe, the popular adaptation of DC Comics characters and concepts into all-ages programming. This adapted universe started with Batman: The Animated Series and comprised several shows on multiple networks, all of which fit into a shared universe based on their comic book counterparts. The adaptation of these properties is heavily reliant to intertextuality across DC Comics media. The shared universe developed within the television medium acted as an early example of comic book media adapting the idea of shared universes, a process that has been replicated with extreme financial success by DC and Marvel (in various stages of fruition). I address the process of adapting DC Comics properties in television, dividing it into “strict” or “loose” adaptations, as well as derivative adaptations that add new material to the comic book canon. This process was initially slow, exploding after the first series (Batman: The Animated Series) changed networks and Saturday morning cartoons flourished, allowing for more opportunities for producers to create content. References, crossover episodes, and the later series Justice League Unlimited allowed producers to utilize this shared universe to develop otherwise impossible adaptations that often became lasting additions to DC Comics publishing.

    ENG 1131: POLITICS OF THE SUPERHERO, SPRING 2019 ENG 1131: Politics of the Superhero (Class #13890) Instructor: Megan Fowler MWF Period 5; W Period E1-E3 Email: [email protected] Office: Turlington 4321 University of Florida Office hours: W Period 6-7 COURSE DESCRIPTION The superhero has had a lasting cultural legacy starting from the archetype’s 1930s origin and continuing with an almost overwhelming proliferation of superhero media into the 21st century. This course will examine that legacy, focusing on the political and cultural contexts that shape superheroes and how superhero narratives respond to these contexts. In addition, as this is a Writing Through Media course, we will be exploring the myriad of different mediums creators utilize for superhero stories, including comics, animation, blockbuster films, television shows, radio shows, etc. This course will begin by introducing some of the pulp heroes that served as superhero antecedents, such as Zorro, the Scarlet Pimpernel, and the Phantom. We will then explore the relationship between the superhero and American identity, focusing on the emergence of the Golden Age of superhero comics with characters such as Superman and Captain America. This exploration will demonstrate the cultural legacy of Jewish identity on the origin of the superhero, the pivotal role superhero comics played in WWII, and the continued political relevance of these characters in contemporary American culture. The next unit will center around superheroines, beginning with Wonder Woman and the influence of first wave feminism on her genesis. Moving into the contemporary, we will look at a number of postmodern takes on the superheroine in a range of formats from independent webcomics to anime to television.

    BLACK VEIL BRIDES – Nytt Album Ute 31:E Oktober!

    29-10-2014 10:00 CET BLACK VEIL BRIDES – nytt album ute 31:e oktober! Black Veil Brides hade en vision inför sitt självbetitlade fjärde album, bandets första som släpps på Spinefarm Records. De tog legendarisk producenten Bob Rock till hjälp för att hitta tillbaka till det sound bandet en gång haft, hitta själva kärnan av deras musikaliska existens. Efter deras konceptuella ”Wretched and Divine:The Story of the Wild Ones” och en samhörande film vid namnet ”Legion Of the Black”, så kände dem att det var dags att rannsaka sin kreativa sida. Bandet valde att sätta sig i studion och skriva som dem gjorde i början, tillsammans i en studiomiljö med full fokus på musiken. Efter många timmar i Bob Rock´s studio i Vancouver och Jim Henson Studios i LA, så hade de skapat ett Black Veil Brides-sound som var äkta och troget deras vision för det här albumet. Sångaren Andy Biersack säger själv att det aldrig skulle kunnat hända utan Bob Rock: "His level of knowledge in terms of song building is incredible," the singer enthuses. "He's an orchestrator, and he taught me so much about what goes into making a great song. I learned more about song-craft in the past couple of months than I did in my whole life. His work continues to be inspirational to all of us—from Dr. Feelgood to The Black Album. Working with Bob was a real treat." Andy Biersack (Vocals), Ashley Purdey (Bass, Backing Vocals), Jake Pitts (Lead guitar), Jinxx (Rythm Guitar, Violin) och Christian ”CC” Coma (Drums) har haft ett helt annat tillvägagångssätt när det kom till att skapa den här skivan.
