The nature reserve Entry to the visitor centre is free. Gift aid admission to the nature reserve is £5 and free for NWT members and children. Entry tickets can be bought from the visitor centre. The reserve is open daily from 10am.

Visitor centre Our award-winning visitor centre is open every day, all year except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, 10am – 5pm (10am – 4pm 28 October to 28 February). Our staff and volunteers are always on hand to help you. The café serves excellent coffee, cakes, snacks and lunches and has an outdoor seating area on the terrace with breath-taking views. The gift shop has an outstanding selection of books as well as crafts, gifts and pottery.

The gallery Our gallery is located in the thatch-roofed, wooden building. From here, explore the wildlife on the reserve using telescopes. Enjoy fantastic artwork – paintings, photography, textiles, printmaking and glass work – from local artists who take inspiration from the natural world. Optics specialists CleySpy are also located in the centre. They are on hand daily from 10am – 4pm to help you find the right equipment.

Simon Aspinall Wildlife Education Centre Our education centre has been designed for visitors to discover and be inspired by wildlife and includes: • Films, touchscreens and displays • Events for all ages and abilities • Adult learning workshops • Evening talks and performances • The Aspinall Centre can also be booked for business meetings and community use. • Temporary exhibitions The centre is named in memory of naturalist, Simon Aspinall (1958 – 2011) in recognition of his contribution to ornithology and nature conservation, both in the UK and abroad.

School and college visits Cley Marshes provides school groups with great opportunities to explore both coastal and habitats. A school day here will reflect the landscape, habitats and history of Cley Marshes, whilst complimenting school-based learning. We will tailor-make a timetable that suits your group’s requirements. General event information • A large percentage of our events take place outside on the reserve, please dress accordingly to the changing weather of the North Coast. Stout footwear is advised on the nature reserve. • In the event of adverse weather please ring the visitor centre on 01263 740008 to check event alterations. • Please inform our visitor centre if you wish to cancel an event as we often have a reserve list for our events. • All children attending any events must be accompanied by an adult. • Throughout the year we will be offering free taster events in the afternoon. These are short events, advertised on the day at the centre and will give you a flavour of wildlife on the reserve. • We may take photos at some of our events. MEMBERS’ WEEKEND

Friday 18 – Sunday 20 October To celebrate how much our members mean to NWT, we are offering a special weekend to coincide with our AGM. You can bring along a non-member to the reserve for free to show them why Cley Marshes is such a special place. Additionally there will be a members only special event to say thank you for your continued support.

SUNDAY 20 OCTOBER Create a Colourful Aviary with Alice Lee 10am – 4pm Artist Alice Lee will lead a casual and fun workshop colouring a variety of her bird designs (or you can draw your own), then applying them to a wall panel or turn them into flying mobiles. Materials will be provided. If possible, please bring thin cardboard from your recycling. All ages and skill levels welcome. Cost: Free (No need to book)

THURSDAY 12 SEPTEMBER The Archaeology of the Norfolk Coast Norfolk’s coast is a rich resource of archaeological sites. In this illustrated talk, David Robertson will use over 20 years of research to explore its full vastness. Join us in journeying through the deep history of footprints and stone tools at Happisburgh, to pass through Bronze Age timber circles, Roman forts, lost medieval villages and post medieval ports, to finish with 20th-century military remains.

THURSDAY 10 OCTOBER Music in the Landscape Following his talk earlier in the year on Fur, Fins and Feathers, Mike Green will now present a selection of music associated with the sights and sounds of the countryside. The emphasis will be on Norfolk and ; featuring meadows, woodlands, rivers and lakes, floods and people.

THURSDAY 24 OCTOBER Wildlife of Richard Porter, who has spent many years trudging the shingle on the National Trust’s famous reserve, will regale you with tales of the wonderful wildlife to be encountered here. Accompany him on a journey that takes you from seals to sea swallows, and small coppers to sea sandwort. THURSDAY 7 NOVEMBER The Orchids of Norfolk NWT Wildlife Ambassador Roger Jones speaks about the wild orchids that can be found in the Norfolk countryside, anywhere from woods to churchyards, and even quite commonly on roadside verges.

THURSDAY 21 NOVEMBER Midnight Sun and Norfolk Winter Most of our avian winter visitors spend the summer breeding in the arctic before returning to Norfolk.David Horsley, biologist, keen naturalist and wildlife photographer, looks at the lives of birds at both ends of their flyway and explores why they make such huge journeys.

THURSDAY 28 NOVEMBER Ghostland: In Search of a Haunted Country Edward Parnell’s new book Ghostland (published by William Collins, October 2019) is his moving exploration of what has haunted Britain’s writers and artists – and what is haunting him. It is a unique and elegiac meditation on grief, memory and longing, and of the redemptive power of stories and nature. In this talk he will focus on some of the eerie writers and landscapes of Norfolk and East Anglia, as well as the wildlife that is threaded throughout his book. With luck, perhaps Cley’s famous ‘ghost owl’ might even decide to put in an appearance.

THURSDAY 12 DECEMBER Cranes and Sex in Northern Norway Paul Richards is local photographer who is regularly shortlisted in many international salons and wildlife competitions. In this talk, he will discuss his time spent photographing the birds of Northern Norway. He will tell the story of the end journey, the breeding stage for many and other birds that visit the Norfolk Coast. ______

THURSDAY 12 SEPTEMBER Steve Burrows: From Birder to Birder Murder Steve Burrows is an award-winning Canadian mystery writer, journalist, and past recipient of a “Nature Writer of the Year” award from BBC Wildlife. His presentation will take a light-hearted look at his journey from producing non-fiction pieces as a field editor for an environmental magazine, to writing award-winning murder mystery novels.

THURSDAY 26 SEPTEMBER Future Cities: birds and the built environment Mike Toms, author of the New Naturalist volume Garden Birds, explores how birds use the built environment, and how this use is shaped by the challenges and opportunities of urban living.

THURSDAY 31 OCTOBER Charlie Burrell in Conversation with NWT’s Nick Acheson Sir Charles inherited Knepp Castle Estate in West Sussex from his grandparents in 1983. All 3,500 acres of the Knepp Estate are now devoted to a process-led rewilding project involving free-roaming herds of cattle, horses, pigs and deer as drivers of habitat creation. In 2015, Knepp Wildland received a People Environment Achievement (PEA) award for Nature and, in 2017, the Anders Wall award for special contribution to the rural environment within the European Union.

THURSDAY 14 NOVEMBER Seahenge: A Journey into poetry, imagery and archaeology Join Kevin Crossley-Holland, well-known poet translator from Anglo-Saxon, re-teller of traditional tales and prize winning novelist for children, and David Robertson, archaeologist and historian, for an evening discussing Seahenge and its sister. The focus will be Kevin’s latest book of poetry, Seahenge: A Journey, and how its poems relate to archaeology, photography and art of Bronze Age timber circles, burial mounds, henges and the Icknield Way.

NATURAL HISTORY WORKSHOPS

All workshops are suitable for all abilities. They are designed as an introduction to the subject.

SUNDAYS: 8 SEPTEMBER, 15 SEPTEMBER, 22 SEPTEMBER, 6 OCTOBER, 13 OCTOBER, 20 OCTOBER A Beginners’ Guide to Norfolk Birds 10.30am – 3.30pm This six-week series of workshops will be led by local enthusiast, Julian Thomas. Each workshop includes a morning in the education centre – the first half covering a particular aspect of a bird’s life or birding in Norfolk, and the second devoted to the understanding and identification of a group of commoner Norfolk birds. This will be followed by an afternoon walk on the reserve. By the end of the course the participants will have learnt about the life histories and identification of over 140 species that occur regularly in the county. SATURDAY 14 SEPTEMBER Bugs and Beetles 10.30am – 3.30pm Bugs (Hemiptera) and beetles (Coleoptera) are two of the most diverse orders of insects, with more than 5,500 species occurring in the UK. National expert Dr Tristan Bantock will provide an introduction on how to look for and identify these fascinating insects. SATURDAY 2 NOVEMBER Whales, Dolphins and Porpoise of the North Norfolk Coast 10.30am – 3.30pm Carl Chapman is the county’s cetacean recorder. As well as being heavily involved with Sea Watch Foundation’s efforts to monitor whale, dolphin and porpoises around the UK, his search for these elusive mammals has taken him on a search spanning all continents. Carl’s workshop will explore the physiology, occurrence and identification of these creatures and in the afternoon you will be led to the sea wall to see if we can spot any off Cley. SATURDAY 16 NOVEMBER Prehistoric Burial Grounds in Norfolk 10.30am – 3.30pm Prehistoric burial mounds are found all over the British Isles, with over 300 surviving in Norfolk alone. Each one has its own story to tell. This workshop, led by David Robertson from Archaeology East Anglia, will explore the different types of burial mounds and excavated evidence, with an afternoon field trip to Norfolk’s largest prehistoric cemetery. SATURDAY 23 NOVEMBER Winter Trees 10.30am – 1.30pm The ability to recognise different tree species is a valuable skill for ecologists, educators, gardeners and naturalists alike. At this time of the year, trees can be identified by their buds, twigs and bark and we will use these features to introduce you to the key tree species found in the UK. SUNDAY 24 NOVEMBER Winter Waders 10.30am – 3.30pm Waders are one of the favourite groups of birds for most birders due to their amazing migrations, great diversity and often stunningly beautiful plumages. This workshop will cover the identification and ageing of most waders that occur in Britain, with particular emphasis on those that visit Norfolk. FRIDAY 6 SEPTEMBER Create a Miniature Scene with Sally Holman 10.30am – 12.30pm This short workshop will give you the opportunity to try your hand at making a small textile picture using Sally’s special techniques. You will be able to choose from a landscape or seascape kit and will learn a variety of techniques that can be applied to other projects. Please bring a basic sewing kit. FRIDAY 6 SEPTEMBER Knit a Rag Rug Sample with Sally Holman 1 – 3pm Learn this old technique of making rag rugs and recycle those old cotton garments. This is a simple but interesting technique that embraces the theme of recycling, with the added satisfaction that comes from the peaceful and therapeutic craft of hand knitting. Please bring a pair of 4.00mm Knitting Needles (old size 8’s) and some washed and ironed cotton garments/fabric (Note: furnishing fabric is not suitable) for recycling. SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER Leaping Trout – Effects in Acrylic 10.30am – 3.30pm Using controlled splashing techniques you will create a dynamic and individual backdrop for our trout. In this workshop, you will take a stroll on Cley reserve to gain inspiration from the sights and sounds which surround you. Once you return to our centre, workshop leader and floristry expert Nicole Rivett will help you to use your experiences to create a handtied bouquet which is yours to take home. Each week will include a walk and the opportunity to write outside in a different location within and around the Cley to Salthouse Living Landscape. Time will also be spent in the Education Centre reading and creating poems and prose inspired by place, landscape, weather and the natural world. At the end of the course, participants will be offered the chance to join in a reading event and a display of a selection of their work in the Education Centre. Spend some time learning the basic techniques of construction using a specially prepared terracotta clay; after a short walk, viewing the abundant bird life for inspiration, we will complete our final piece. Each piece will be completed on the day and then, after a period of slow drying, the work will be kiln-fired for you, to be collected from the visitor centre at a later date. WEDNESDAY 18 SEPTEMBER – TUESDAY 1 OCTOBER A Varied Display in the Traditional Style of Chinese Brush Painting A display of both colourful and black/white paintings covering landscapes, flora, fauna and some appropriately seasonal works. Several artists from Blakeney Chinese Brush Painting will be exhibiting. Most of the paintings on display will also be available as greetings cards.

WEDNESDAY 2 – TUESDAY 15 OCTOBER Maureen Cherry Norfolk born Maureen Cherry works in oils. She is inspired by the Norfolk skies, seas and marshes, the emotion from the beauty, freedom and sometimes the destruction by the which surges around our shores.

WEDNESDAY 16 – TUESDAY 29 OCTOBER Wildlife Around Us A series of paintings by Steve Cale capturing the moments from the lives of the wildlife that live alongside us both near and far.

WEDNESDAY 30 OCTOBER – TUESDAY 12 NOVEMBER Rural and Wild Norfolk This photographic exhibition by Sarah Weston is themed around water and waves and all that the eye does not see, from the wildlife that are constantly around us to the seascapes with their furling waves and patterns.

WEDNESDAY 13 – TUESDAY 26 NOVEMBER Light Fantastic Sally Temple is an accomplished landscape artist. An associate member of the Institute of East Anglian Artists, she has painted for over 30 years. Sally’s Light Fantastic is an exhibition of Norfolk landscapes in traditional oil paints, created using only her fingers.

WEDNESDAY 27 NOVEMBER – TUESDAY 10 DECEMBER Wildlife a Different Perspective A display of UK wildlife by photographer, Josh Jaggard from different perspectives and angles. From abstract gannets to arty backlit otters, unique aerial shots to the underwater world.

WEDNESDAY 11 DECEMBER – TUESDAY 7 JANUARY The Art of Nature Photography The abstract nature and simplicity of Paul Richard’s pictures makes them feel and look more like paintings than photographs. Paul has previously been shortlisted for Bird Photographer of the Year.

SATURDAY 9 – SUNDAY 24 NOVEMBER Martin Woodcock: a retrospective exhibition 10am – 5pm Martin Woodcock was a keen ornithologist who illustrated close to 4,000 species of the world’s birds in many books, including his most well-known series, The Birds of Africa. He was a keen supporter of , having known Cley Marshes nature reserve since 1951 when he was 16. The reserve and its birds feature in many of his paintings. This retrospective exhibition gives an example of some of his beautiful paintings, usually of birds in their habitats capturing the atmospheric feeling of his experiences. ______

SATURDAY 12 OCTOBER Salt House 6.30pm doors for food and bar, 8pm performance Salt House is Jenny Sturgeon, guitarist, harmonium player and holder of a PHD in seabirds, Ewan MacPherson, Singer and guitarist and Lauren MacColl, Fiddler and viola player. Their album Undersong, which was recorded in the stunningly restored Telford Church on the island of Berneray, has been praised by folk bible Roots for bringing “startling freshness” to the British song tradition. Songs are central to Salt House. New songs that sound as if they’ve always been here. Ancient ballads woken up, poems given the tunes they’ve long deserved. Capturing Cley – Wildlife and Wild Spaces 10am – 4pm Take up the challenge to contribute to our ‘Wildlife and Wild Spaces’ film. Head out on to the reserve with one of our handheld cameras to independently explore and film the wildlife and wild spaces of Cley. We will use your favourite footage in our short film. If you would like to take away a copy of your films from the day, please bring a USB memory stick (minimum 2GB capacity) with you. Cost: £5 camera hire + £50 refundable deposit required. We’ll be talking about the bigger picture of ocean conservation, looking at some of the detritus littering the shore, and thinking about ways to stop it from getting there. How to Give Up Plastic with Will McCallum 4.30pm – 5.30pm Will McCallum has been working with governments and companies to prevent our plastic crisis, as well as researching what everyday consumers can do to reduce plastic pollution.
