  • Young Americans to Emotional Rescue: Selected Meetings
YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music.

  • Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)”—The Eagles (1976) Added to the Registry: 2016 Essay by Marc Eliot (Guest Post)*
“Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)”—The Eagles (1976) Added to the Registry: 2016 Essay by Marc Eliot (guest post)* The Eagles In 1971, the arrival of The Eagles signaled a major shift in popular musical tastes in America. If Woodstock was the funeral for both the music and the culture of a decade of drugged out, hippie, free love and cultish idealism, the Seventies was the decade of blatant decadence, political cynicism, sexual distrust, and rampant narcissism. No band represented both the rejection of the Sixties and the celebration of the Seventies more than its crown princes, the Eagles. Songs like “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Witchy Woman,” “One of These Nights,” and “Already Gone,” filled with spirited playing, close harmonies and an overlay of the Eagles’ war between the sexes, comprise four of the ten selections included in the initial compilation of Eagles’ hit songs from their first four albums, “Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975).” Ironically, although the Eagles’ laid-back sound was bright and natural as Southern California sunshine, none of the original four members were Golden State natives (Don Henley, vocalist, lyricist, drummer, was from Texas, bred on bluegrass and country music; Glenn Frey, vocalist, lyricist, rhythm guitar, pianist, came from the streets of Detroit, influenced by the music of Motown and mentored by Bob Seger; Randy Meisner, on bass, was a veteran bar band night sider out of Nebraska; Bernie Leadon, guitar, mandolin, banjo, was a Minnesotan who loved and loved to play classic country). Each migrated separately to Los Angeles, like lemmings, to The Troubadour, the musical and cultural ground zero club on Santa Monica Boulevard, owned and operated by Doug Weston, who favored putting on his stage country-rock bands and female vocalists.

  • 55 Years of Country-Rock, 1965-Present
55 years of country-rock, 1965-present: Creating a new American musical genre--how two immensely popular genres of music merged to create a timeless style, uniquely American in every aspect. This class will cover the historically significant country-rock movement which started in LA in 1965 and spread across the country, changing the musical landscape of popular music. • Scape of America in the Seventies, Casting the Social Mores of Those High-Flying Years Into Keenly Observed Songs That Everyone Came to Know by Heart
O RP E R F O RP MERS THE EAGLES SOARED ABOVE THE RAPIDLY CHANGING LAND- scape of America in the Seventies, casting the social mores of those high-flying years into keenly observed songs that everyone came to know by heart. In their flight across a decade that they defined as authoritatively as any band, the Eagles mirrored the larger changes tak ing place in society They began as wide-eyed innocents with a country- rock pedigree and ended as purveyors of grandiose, dark-themed albums chronicling a world of excess and seduction that had begun spinning seriously out of control. A Hollywood scriptwriter couldn’t have plotted out the parallel history of a band and the decade they inhabited any better than this: The Eagles were born in 1971 and died in 1980. The ultimate plot twist is that they were reborn in 1994 for anoth er go-round as the public demonstrated an insatiable appetite for their music and messages. (LThe stats on the Eagles are hugely impressive. A best-of collection, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, has the distinction of being the second biggest-selling album of all time, having sold in excess of twenty-four million copies to date. It was also, The Eagles, 1979: Glenn incidentally, the first album ever to be certified plat Frey, Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit, Don Felder, Joe inum (one million sold) by the Recording Industry Walsh (from left) Association of America, which introduced that classification in 1976. How complete was the Eagles’ conquest of the Seventies, particularly the latter half of the decade? Consider that they released four consecu tive Number One albums between 1975 and 1979 - One o f These Nights, B Y P A R K E P U T 1 R B AU G lü Their Greatest Hits, Hotel California and The Long Run - which collectively topped Billboards album chart for twenty-seven weeks.

  • The Boys of Summer
29 The Boys of Summer 1/5 ON RAMP Written by Eagles front man Don Henley and longtime Tom Petty lead guitarist Mike Campbell, “The Boys of Summer” was the first single from Henley’s 1984 solo album, Building the Perfect Beast. The song swiftly broke into the top 10 . Ostensiby the protagonist in the song is singing and reminiscing about a lost love . Many have further interpreted the song to be about how this lost love is spending the summer by having flings with several guys (hence the title) . But really the overarching theme is longing for a time that has long passed and can never be lived anew . ROADMAP The song is played as if it were in the key of C≥ minor/E major, with a capo at the 2nd fret 66 transposing everything up one whole step to the key of D≥ minor/F≥ major . Keep in mind that all fretboard positions are relative to the capo, meaning everything is actually played two frets higher than written . This song features Campbell’s tastefully understated, soulful lead playing . The guitarist’s signature style is all about feel and making his instrument sing, as opposed to playing at blazing speeds . While he can rip when he wants to, as he does at the end of Petty’s “American Girl” (also featured in this book), it is Campbell’s full tone, organic touch, and polished string bending and vibrato techniques that make his lead guitar playing so appealing and musical . “The Boys of Summer” features some of Campbell’s most tasteful lead playing and serves as a great example of how to make your guitar sing .

It allows you the listener to hear the music exactly as it was recorded, before it was altered to fit on a CD or squashed down to MP3 size. So sit back and relax as you we uncover the life, loves and inspiraqtions of America’s favourite country rockers. Experiencing success beyond their wildest imaginations, The Eagles invented ‘Life in the Fast Lane’: partying hard, throwing TVs out of windows, and all the while still producing carefully crafted tracks full of finely-honed harmonies. ‘Rescue Me’ - Linda Ronstadt SPOTIFY In their earliest formation, The Eagles began as the nameless backing band for American sweetheart Linda Ronstadt – a popular country, folk singer. After completing a whirlwind tour across America during the summer of 1971 and recording on her 1972 self titled album, Don Henely, Glen Frey, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner had caught a taste for fame and desired to embark on their own Rock & Roll adventure. With Linda’s blessing, the four lads formed a band of their own – seeking to produce music that encapsulated their original country rock sound. Henley was on drums and vocals, Frey sang and played guitar and keyboard, Leadon laid down the lead guitar role and Meisner filled in the bass. Soon they were signed to Asylum Records, a fledgling music label that had been recently started by David Geffen.

  • One of These Nights – the Eagles Strumming Pattern
One Of These Nights – The Eagles Strumming Pattern: This one needs a little explanation. For the most part, the entire song is strummed as: DDD, DUDUDU, DU until it reaches the B7, which is just a DDDD. As far as any sliding on the strings I did, really it is just a ‘time filler’ due to some of the pauses in the song. Simply slide down to the 12 th fret of the Low E string real quick and then back to the open position to provide a dramatic tension. Chords Used: Intro: Em - Cmaj7 - Am - Em - Bm Em Cmaj7 One of these nights, one of these crazy old nights Am Em we're gonna find out, pretty mama, what turns on your lights Em D The full moon is calling, the fever is high Cmaj7 and the wicked wind whispers and moans, Am you got your demons, you got your desires, Em Bm well, I got a few of my own.
