The post-war story of the 24 Heures du Mans begins in the year 1949. And already in 1951 – the pro - duction of the first sports cars in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen commenced in March the previous year – a small delegation from Porsche KG tackles the high-speed circuit 200 kilometres west of Paris in the Sarthe department. Class victory right at the outset for the 356 SL Aluminium Coupé marks the beginning of one of the most illustrious legends in motor racing: Porsche and Le Mans. Race cars from Porsche have contested Le Mans every year since 1951. The reward for this incredible stamina (Porsche is the only marque to have competed for 63 years without a break) is a raft of records, including 16 overall wins and 102 class victories to 2013. The sporting competition and success at the top echelon of racing in one of the world’s most famous arenas is as much a part of Porsche as the number combination 911. After a number of class wins in the early fifties with the 550, the first time on the podium in the overall classification came in 1958 with the 718 RSK clinching third place. -

Marques De Portago
La aristocracia en el automovilismo: El marqués Alfonso de Portago Entre las curiosidades de la historia del automovilismo, encontramos en ciertas ocasiones, la presencia de personalidades extravagantes, como lo fueron los aristócratas, pilotos de sangre azul. Entre ellos encontramos hacia los años 50 al marqués de Portago, cuyo nombre completo era Alfonso Antonio Vicente Eduardo Angel Blas Francisco Borja Cabeza de Vaca y Leighton, quien había nacido en Londres en 1928 y fue apadrinado por el rey Alfonso XIII de España. Su trayectoria en el automovilismo no fue muy extensa, ya que debutó en 1953, y murió en un accidente en 1957. No obstante, y a pesar de que no era un piloto demasiado efectivo, conquistó algunas victorias, mayormente compitiendo con Ferrari. Al principio, participó de carreras como copiloto, debutando en la carrera Panamericana de México en 1953, aunque poco después competiría él en otros autos, sin problema alguno para adquirirlos, dada su estirpe noble y su riqueza. Disputó pocas carreras en F1, pero participó en competencias de coches sport, de larga duración, como las 24 horas de Le Mans, y la Mille Miglia. Anduvo también por Argentina, participando en los 1000 kms. de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Si había algo que caracterizaba al noble español, esto era ser un gran velocista, aunque en muchas ocasiones no terminaba las carreras por su ímpetu. No obstante, triunfó en una carrera para coches no oficiales en las islas Bahamas, sobre una Ferrari 750 Monza que había adquirido, para luego obtener un segundo puesto en ese mismo sitio. El marqués de Portago siempre fue admirador de los Ferrari, aunque tardó en convencer a don Enzo para que lo contrate como piloto. -

Il y a là quelques clients fidèles, surtout des ménagères qui font leurs courses avant le repas de midi. Un fort mistral souffle ce matin-là, « La Cave du Pétoulet » est d’autant plus accueillante. « Pétoulet » c’est le surnom de Maurice Trintignant (1917-2005, Nîmes), coureur (ou pilote) automobile fameux, heureux vigneron, spécialisé plutôt dans le rosé, tiré de ses 45 hectares, au Mas d’Arnaud, entre Vergèze et Vauvert, dans la campagne gardoise. Depuis 1930 Maurice est l’oncle de Jean-Louis. Trintignant est rentré de La Havane où il a participé au 2E Grand Prix de Cuba (24 coureurs) le lundi 24 février, au volant de la Maserati de… Fangio, empêché. Et pour cause, le quintuple champion du monde de Formule 1, vainqueur du 1 er GP de Cuba l’année précédente, a été enlevé la veille, dimanche, par un groupe de rebelles cubains du Mouvement castriste du 26 Juillet. Fidel Castro, Raul, le Che, Camilo Cienfuegos et leurs hommes (combien ? peu) sont quelque part dans la Sierra Maestra. Fangio L’Argentin Juan Manuel Fangio (1911-1995) sera « retenu patriotiquement » quelque 26 heures. Si le compte est bon, le groupe était formé de quelque 26 hommes et femmes (7) ça ne s’invente pas. Ce matin de fin mars 1958, « Pétoulet » raconte pour l’assistance du jour. Le journaliste parisien Georges Pagnoud n’est pas là par hasard. -

They were only ever on sale at the circuit, and were sold to raise funds for things going on in Silverstone Village. Being sold on the circuit gave them access to some very hard to find signatures, as you can see from this initial selection. Targa Florio Winner in the Porsche 908
Gerhard Mitter – Targa Florio winner in the Porsche 908 Gerhard Mitter was one of the greatest racing drivers Germany has ever produced. A Porsche works driver who took three European Hill Climb Championship titles, he suffered a fatal accident shortly before his planned move to Formula One. In the 1960s, the European Hill Climb Championship was one of the premier competitions in motor sport. The most successful driver of the era was Gerhard Mitter, who had been recruited to the Porsche works team to replace the late Edgar Barth. Mitter emulated Barth in taking three European Hill Climb Championship titles and even surpassed the achievements of his predecessor by winning them in consecutive years. In 1966, 1967 and 1968, he triumphed against rival entries from Ferrari, BMW and Abarth – and successfully fended off his ambitious teammate Rolf Stommelen in the latter two seasons. The cars that took him to these victories were primarily the Porsche 906 Carrera 6 and various versions of the Porsche 910. With his ability to focus all his energy and concentration on a period of a few short minutes, Mitter became one of the most dominant racers in the mountains. In 1969, Mitter was among the drivers who entered into Porsche legend by steering the company to its first ever title in the International Championship for Makes. He went on to record his greatest victory in the May of that year, taking first place at the Targa Florio – part of the World Sportscar Championship – with Udo Schütz in the Porsche 908. Within the large works team, Gerhard Mitter was the first point of contact for the engineering team around Peter Falk. -

Motorworld Motorworld Motorworld Motorworld Motorworld Motorworld by Unknown Motorworld Motorworld Italy I’ve been fortunate enough over the years to stay in many truly outstanding hotels where obsequious waiters compete for your attention with the view – hard when it’s Hong Kong harbour, San Francisco Bay or St Mark’s. But my favourite is the Locanda del Sant’ UffizioDa Beppé in Asti, where I stayed when we were filming the Fiat Coupé for Top Gear. It’s a beautiful building, the food is as good as you’ll eat anywhere and the owner redefines the concept of friendliness. Here’s a man who would very probably stick his tongue down your throat if you ever went back for second helpings. But I enjoyed my fourday stay there most of all because over lunch, on the second day, we shared the dining room with an Italian family. I’m not talking here about a bearded father in grey shoes, a woman called Janet in Marks and Spencer’s finest and two children. I’m not talking about the nearsilence that accompanies most British family days out. No, here we had granddad and grandma, her mother, their six children, various inlaws and an indeterminate number of grandchildren. It was impossible to say how many exactly because they were never all at the table at the same time – they’d get one seated and another would be off, making tyresquealing noises round the dessert trolley. It was a huge feast which appeared to have been ruined as the eighth course was being cleared. -
