National GOVERNMENT POLICIES & SCHEMES 25 Sep Government launches ‘UMMID’ initiative to tackle inherited genetic diseases of new born babies People who cannot afford expensive care for genetic disorders to be benefited: Dr. Harsh Vardhan POINTS TO NOTE UMMID (Unique Methods of Management and treatment of Inherited Disorders) initiative was launched by the Union Minister for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Health & Family Welfare. Minister also inaugurated NIDAN (National Inherited Diseases Administration) Kendras, which is being supported by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), M/o Science and Technology. Taking into account that congenital and hereditary genetic diseases are becoming a significant health burden in India and realizing the need for adequate and effective genetic testing and counselling services. As a part of this initiative, in the first phase, five NIDAN Kendras have been established to provide comprehensive clinical care. 27 Sep Dr Harsh Vardhan launches ‘TB Harega Desh Jeetega’ Campaign Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare today launched the new TB Harega Desh Jeetega Campaign, along with the National TB Prevalence Survey. Multi-stakeholder and community participation shall form the pivot of the countrywide campaign. POINTS TO NOTE The new TB Harega Desh Jeetega Campaign, along with the National TB Prevalence Survey was launched by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare. all, 25 such vans will be part of the prevalence survey, which shall take 6 months and be carried out across the country. This shall present national and state level data, which will be used as a policy tool for further interventions. The three strong pillars include clinical approach, public health component and active community participation. The new TB campaign aims to improve and expand the reach of TB care services across the country, by 2022. POINTS TO NOTE To observe the “Voluntary Code of Ethics” during all future elections including the ongoing General Elections to the Haryana & Maharashtra legislative assemblies and various bye elections being held simultaneously, Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) on behalf of its members has agreed. IAMAI has assured the Commission that the platforms will cooperate in ensuring the conduct of free and fair elections. This came into immediate effect from the day it was presented to the Commission on 20th March, 2019. During the election period,social media platforms took action on 909 violative cases, reported by the ECI. Social Media platforms will voluntarily undertake information, education and communication campaigns to build awareness including electoral laws and other related instructions along with a high priority dedicated grievance redressal channel and to facilitate transparency in paid political advertisements. OTHERS 26 Sep Government of India has instituted ‘Sardar Patel National Unity Award’ - Highest Civilian Award for contribution to Unity and Integrity of India The Award seeks to recognize notable and inspiring contributions to promote the cause of national unity and integrity and to reinforce the value of a strong and united India. The award will be announced on the occasion of the National Unity Day, i.e. the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel on 31st October. POINTS TO NOTE Government of India has instituted the highest civilian award in the field of contribution to the unity and integrity of India, in the name of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The Award seeks to recognize notable and inspiring contributions to promote the cause of national unity and integrity and to reinforce the value of a strong and united India. The Award would consist of a medal and a citation. No monetary grant or cash award would be attached to this Award. All citizens, without distinction of religion, race caste, gender, place of birth, age or occupation, and any institution/organization would be eligible for the Award. POINTS TO NOTE Russia is carrying out massive multinational military exercise with participation from China, India and Pakistan among other countries from September 16 to 21. The exercise is a part of Exercise TSENTR 2019 involving thousands of weapons, military equipment, hundreds of aircrafts, ships and support vessels and the drills are designed to test the combat-readiness of the military command and troops.
