State and local officials tour new Mirmont outpatient site in Broomall By Lisa Kalkes, assistant marketing manager, MLH

On October 7th, Mirmont Outpatient Services hosted an open house at its new facility in Broomall, attended by more than 150 guests including PA Senator Tom McGarrigle and Delaware County Councilman Mario Civera, Jr., and Kate Schramm, Southeast Regional Manager for U.S. Senator Pat Toomey. MLH Behavioral Health opened the new Broomall location to treat substance abuse and acute mental health issues. Mental health services at Broomall include partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient therapy, group and individual counseling. Substance use disorders treatment includes early intervention classes, intensive outpatient, and individual and group counseling. The open house included tours of the new facility, refreshments and entertainment by the cover band Chico’s Vibe, which features Mirmont’s own Ed Mount. Guests could also take part in a 5- minute meditation class to experience how Mirmont takes a unique, holistic, integrative approach to behavioral health. “It was a wonderful event in a beautiful new facility with great energy, good food and innovative programming worth talking about," said Main Line Health Behavioral Health President Tom Cain. "Everyone who attended had nothing but positive things to say. Thanks to the Broomall staff who did a wonderful job in welcoming people, giving tours and representing Main Line Health in such a positive light.” In photo: Jocelyn Spencer-Sagrati, Therapist and Yoga Instructor at the new Broomall location, describes the Mindfulness Center, where meditation/yoga is offered to patients as part of the holistic “mindfulness-based” treatment approach to Patrick Dowling, Divisional Director, Mirmont Outpatient Services, and State Senator McGarrigle.

Healthcare Security Week: Good time for update on MLH actions By Barbara Wadsworth, Chief Nursing Officer, Paul Yakulis, SVP, Human Resources, and Robert Feinberg, director of Emergency Management

The recent mass shooting in Oregon and other recent news has triggered some questions from within MLH about our safety and security as it relates to active shooters and other types of violence. As October 11-17, 2015, is Healthcare Security and Safety Week, is appropriate that we update our progress in this area. As reported earlier this year in Connections, we have taken several steps to enhance the preparedness and safety of all MLH staff and campuses, including work by an interdisciplinary team to review best training practices and the distribution of a How to Respond poster to employees. Recently, approximately 60 individuals from across MLH participated in a pilot of a System- wide educational program. Their evaluations are currently being reviewed, and we expect to launch a final educational program for all employees -- in both clinical and office environments -- in early 2016. Nationwide studies have shown that violent behavior in health care most frequently occurs in Emergency departments. MLH began a vigorous effort addressing ED violence and staff safety in March 2013 when a modified ENA Violence Staff Assessment Survey was launched to staff in our four emergency departments. More than 400 staff participated. Following the survey, a multifaceted action plan was developed under the direction of Barbara Wadsworth, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, to improve staff safety and to mitigate ED violence. Safety teams were formed at each hospital and phased system initiatives were initiated. The largest investment in this phase of the action plan promoted staff education. In 2014, clinical nurse educators from the four EDs collaborated to develop a one-hour presentation to provide clinical staff the necessary tools to promote stretcher-side safety on a daily basis. An outside consulting agency then did a thorough assessment and evaluation of each MLH campus, leading to a number of improvements, including: • Green wrist banding of Emergency Department visitors • Mother Baby/Nursery badges added color to increase infant security • New Event Reporting feature on Event Report to monitor and track verbal and physical assault. • MLH signage addressing weapons/smoking and disrespectful behavior • Gun Lockers in Security • Weapons Policy • Calling Security and 9+911 simultaneously if needed • Restricting access of non-Emergency Department staff through the Emergency Department • Around-the-clock Security presence in ED • New ED Visitor Policy & Visitor Guidelines • Personal panic devices for Emergency Department staff A four-hour educational program is currently rolling out to all Emergency Department staff, addressing the aggression cycle, techniques to verbally de-escalate a situation, and hands-on maneuvers to protect staff if they are physically assaulted. Employees are reminded that Main Line Health does not allow weapons on any hospital/facility property, with the exception of licensed law enforcement officers employed by a police agency. For additional information, please review the MLH Weapons on Hospital/Facility Property. We are focused on this work and hold our employee safety in the highest regard, please let us know if you have additional suggestions. 2

Best Places to Work: MLH comes in #2 among extra large companies Business Journal’s annual listing of Best Places to Work was capped last week with the announcement of the top organizations in various categories related to the companies’ size. After receiving the Gold Award last year in the Extra Large Company category, MLH took second place this year, finishing after Virtua and above Sugarhouse Casino and Comcast. Human Resources Senior Vice President Paul Yakulis said, “Being recognized as one of the region’s Best Places to Work is always an honor. Main Line Health has been consistently among the top three employers year after year, reflecting the efforts of employees across the System to develop an environment that prioritizes safety, respects diversity, and finds fun ways to engage colleagues in important initiatives. I fully expect that Main Line Health will be among the leaders for years to come.”

2-factor authentication coming for several remote applications By John Abella, Security director, Information Services

As part of our ongoing commitment to protecting both patient and employee data, Main Line Health is continuously working to improve the security of the systems that we use. Now more than ever, health care providers are the target of well-organized criminal enterprises looking to steal data. One of the upcoming improvements will be the wider deployment of two-factor authentication for access to some remote applications. Already in place for users of PhoneFactor, two-factor authentication will begin over the coming weeks for users seeking remote access to applications including MLH Self Service, Kronos, and Outlook Web Access. This means that in addition to your normal username and password, you will need to be near a phone to receive a call or have a mobile device with you to complete your authentication if you are accessing the application from home or from somewhere not on the MLH network. Enabling this extra security will ensure that no malicious actors can try to guess employee passwords to access these applications. As these improvements are rolled-out, more details will be provided about how the changes may impact staff.

Making Life Healthy Rewards expanded for 2016 By Dan Buckalew, manager, Employee Health Management

Main Line Health launched the Making Life Healthy Program in February, 2015 to help employees and their family members take steps to improve or maintain their health. Rewards were available to employees and spouses who were enrolled in MLH medical plans in the form of medical premium credits for the 2016 benefit plan year. Over 3,000 employees registered on the Redbrick Health portal since March, and participated in programs to improve or maintain their health. Over 1,500 employees achieved the requirements to earn the $15 / pay medical plan credit for 2016. The Rewards program has been enhanced for 2016 and will now include the following:  Quarterly Rewards – All Employees, even those not enrolled in a MLH medical plan, , are now eligible to earn a $50 cash reward for earning 25 points in a quarter from 10/1/15 – 9/30/16. Consistent participants can earn $200 during the program year, which runs from 10/1/15 – 9/30/16. Review the points chart available on the intranet soon for details on how to earn points through recording or participating in healthy activities. (Note: Cash rewards are subject to income taxes due to IRS regulations.) While you earn points toward Quarterly Rewards in 2016, you can also complete the three steps required to earn the Medical Plan Credit for 2017, as described below.  2017 Medical Plan Credit – Employees and spouses enrolled in a MLH medical plan can again earn a credit toward their medical plan expenses for the following year. The requirements to earn this credit have changed and are listed below: Employees: 1. Complete the Compass Health Assessment questionnaire on the Redbrick portal 2. Complete a Biometric Screening at an onsite screening event or through your PCP 3. Complete a Next Steps Consult call to review the results of your Compass Health Assessment and Biometric Screening results, and to discuss an action plan. Spouses: 1. New this year, points will be rewarded not only to those who achieve healthy measures on their biometric screening results, but also to those who achieve year over year improvement, even if not quite in the healthy range. Optimal health of employees benefits each individual’s quality of life, as well as the organization as whole through an enhanced capacity to consistently provide the safest, highest quality health care to our patients. Firefox browser to be deployed across MLH next month By Denis Tucker, Technology director, Information Services

Main Line Health has deployed and supported the Microsoft Internet Explorer Browser (IE) as our standard default browser for years. We have done that based on our primary application vendors development of their systems to support only IE. We need to continue to follow our vendor’s browser support recommendations and use IE as our default browser. Recently, Information Services has received reports that the currently supported version of IE presents some problems when accessing certain educational or clinical reference web sites. To ensure we enable access to web sites needed for business functions, we will be deploying a secondary browser option -- Firefox during the week of November 16. The deployment of Firefox is intended to provide MLH staff an effective alternate browser for web sites that do not perform well using IE.

LMC emergency nurses focus on Domestic Violence Month Lankenau Hospital Emergency Department nurses Lauren Schoppet (left) and Carolyn Wilson (right) used the ED Waiting Room as an educational forum for patients and families to focus on domestic violence during Domestic Violence Awareness month in October. Domestic Violence is the #2 cause of death for women under 50 years old by their spouse or domestic partner. That number is only exceeded by automobile accidents. The nurses’ goal was to challenge the public to learn more about the prevalence and facts surrounding domestic violence and encourage victims to come forward and reach out for help.

Bereavement blankets welcomed for 's 4B Unit Hospice patients enjoy the comfort provided by a warm and cozy blanket. Following in the footsteps of Bryn Mawr Hospital and Lankenau Medical Center, which have been providing bereavement blankets to patients, Paoli Hospital's 4B Medical-Surgical/Hospice Unit is working to do the same thing. A Valley Forge quilting organization has offered to donate handmade quilts, and a recent patient donated a crocheted blanket he made during his stay -- and has offered to make some more. Anyone interested in donating a crocheted or fleece blanket with a simple pattern and color scheme can contact Gretchen Zimmerman, 4B nurse, at [email protected].

Great Catch Winner: Using good judgment for patient safety A Great Catch Award was presented to a BMH 6A telemetry floor nurse who demonstrated her commitment to patient safety by “speaking up for safety” when a patient presented with back pain. By paying close attention to the details of the patient’s symptoms and test that were ordered, the award winner proactively engaged in a situation that may have otherwise caused a serious medical problem for the patient. Her observation, actions and responses resulted in creating a safer situation for the patient. Nurse Kathy Dobbins noticed an echo was ordered for a patient and thought serial troponins should be ordered as well. One was ordered and completed, but Dobbins spoke up for safety and two more troponin levels were ordered. The levels were elevated and it was determined the patient was having a myocardial infarction and was taken to the cath lab. “Kathy was quick to identify a possible medical problem that could have been potentially harmful to the patient,” said Sharon M. DiRienzo, director, Patient Safety and Risk Management. “By using good judgment and voicing her concerns, solutions were made to make certain the patient receive immediate care.” For more information on the Culture of Safety at MLH, please see the Patient Safety page on the intranet at http://intranet/patsafety/.

Survey Readiness Tip of the Week -- Safety Data Sheets (SDS) By Kelly Henry, director, Performance Improvement and Regulatory Affairs

Many products used in the healthcare environment carry specific risks and knowing how to properly deal with any chemical hazards in your workplace is crucial. Ensure you know how to protect yourself and others in the event of spills or leaks. This is applicable not only for main hospitals, but off-site satellite locations associated with the hospital. Safety Data Sheets, formerly known as Materials Safety Data Sheets, provide detailed information regarding recommended use and restrictions for products, proper storage and handling precautions, disposal guidelines, first aid measures if improper contact occurs, as well as cleanup and containment methods and materials in the event of a spill or leak. Thank you from a grateful BMRH patient “I have Muscular Dystrophy and experienced a break to the tibia. I've been a patient at BMRH since 2001 (outpatient, inpatient, aquatic maintenance and volunteer). My sincere appreciation to you and all your staff, especially those assigned to my care on the Spruce Unit. From the moment you arrive at BMRH you feel comfortable and cared for by the team who starts working with you immediately to assist with your care and rehab. Noreen Friel, my case manager, was exceptional. She truly cares about her patients’ well-being and is always accessible for questions. Also, she explained the process and next steps very well. She has also been available to me as I've had questions after discharge. BMRH runs like clockwork, and it is evident that you have a true culture engrained9 in your employees. The staff all deserve a Star and much more! Being an HR professional for the last 20 years, and now in the health care field myself, I know how truly important having great employees makes a business successful.”
