Star Wars and the History of Transmedia Storytelling
13. Chasing Wild Space Narrative Outsides and World-Building Frontiers in Knights of the Old Republic and The Old Republic Cody Mejeur As introduced in the iconic line that precedes the first film’s opening crawl, Star Wars’s galaxy far, far away is the foundation for the franchise’s world- building efforts. It is the backdrop and context for the story told by any Star Wars film, novel, game, or other text,1 and as such it functions as a narrative world or storyworld. David Herman describes a storyworld as the “mental model” of the larger world of a text, one that audiences construct from “textual cues and the inferences that they make possible.”2 In other words, the Star Wars galaxy is only partially represented by any particular text, and audiences use that partial representation to imagine how the rest of the galaxy works. However, it seems strange to call the Star Wars galaxy, itself an agglomeration of inconsistent and contested narratives, characters, and worlds, a singular storyworld. Marie-Laure Ryan’s recent conception of the narrative universe as an accumulation of storyworlds seems more apt.3 This chapter therefore explores the space of the Star Wars galaxy as a narrative universe, arguing that it renews itself and its transmedial franchise through the mystery of outside spaces. The use of these outside spaces in Star Wars suggests a new modification or addition to existing theories of narrative world-building, and draws critical attention to the ethical and political dimensions of world-building processes. A narrative universe relies on the creation of narrative space, including a dynamic process of expanding and exploring that space. -

MERCENARIES and PAID MEN. the MERCENARY IDENTITY in the MIDDLE AGES1 INTRODUCTION John France Swansea University Mercenaries
MERCENARIES AND PAID MEN. THE MERCENARY IDENTITY IN THE MIDDLE AGES1 INTRODUCTION John France Swansea University Mercenaries have never had a good press. At best they have been largely forgotten. The great war between Greece and the Persian Empire is imprinted in our minds as a struggle of freedom against Asiatic des- potism, but it is often forgotten that huge numbers of Greeks fought against Alexander the Great (336–23) as paid men in the ranks of the Persian army. In the twentieth century mercenaries meddling in African wars were regarded with disdain, while even now we look with suspi- cion upon the private-enterprise soldiers serving the coalition in Iraq. This is all the odder in that they may lay claim to be one of the oldest professions known to mankind. In the second millennium the kings of Assyria and Babylon employed Amorite nomads, while the Pharaohs bought the services of Nubians and Philistines, and all this long before money was invented. Such dislike and distrust was especially marked in the Middle Ages when the very term mercenarius was for long a term of abuse. In classical Latin the word simply meant a hireling of any sort, but this was given a particular connotation by its use in a famous passage in the Gospel of St John in which Christ contrasts himself, the Good Shepherd with the ‘hireling . whose own the sheep are not’ who fl ees at the fi rst sign of trouble ‘because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.’2 This dislike had very clear consequences. -

Submitted on : Libya Submitted in : March 2020 1. Regulatory Frameworks and their Application Although Libya signed the International Convention against the Recruitment, Use, Financing, and Training of Mercenaries in 2000 1, the country’s internal legislation and laws do not contain any provisions prohibiting the mercenary activities or providing for the imposition of penalties on them, along with the insufficient investigations to arrest a group of foreign mercenaries in Libya, due to the nature of the conflict between the warring forces and the proliferation of mercenaries to fight on all different sides, in addition to the free presence of a group of them working to carry out criminal activities and violations of human rights. Wofford College Carthaginian Mercenaries: Soldiers of Fortune, Allied Conscripts, and Multi-Ethnic Armies in Antiquity An Honors Thesis Submitted to The Faculty of the Department of History In Candidacy For An Honors Degree in History By Kevin Patrick Emery Spartanburg, South Carolina May 2016 1 Introduction The story of the mercenary armies of Carthage is one of incompetence and disaster, followed by clever innovation. It is a story not just of battles and betrayal, but also of the interactions between dissimilar peoples in a multiethnic army trying to coordinate, fight, and win, while commanded by a Punic officer corps which may or may not have been competent. Carthaginian mercenaries are one piece of a larger narrative about the struggle between Carthage and Rome for dominance in the Western Mediterranean, and their history illustrates the evolution of the mercenary system employed by the Carthaginian Empire to extend her power and ensure her survival. -

A loyal soldier, skilled pilot and superior tactician, he operated with distinction in both small border skirmishes and in major engagements. Though the events of the Mandalorian Wars forever cemented Carth's reputation as a hero, their aftermath dealt a fatal blow to Carth's idealism. In the Sith resurgence that targeted a weakened Republic, the evil Darth Malak sundered Carth's homeworld of Telos. Carth's young wife was killed, and Dustil, his son, was missing. -
Planets D6 / Taris
Planets D6 / Taris Name: Taris Type: Terrestrial Temperature: Hot Atmosphere: Type 1 Hydrosphere: Moderate Gravity: Standard Terrain: Cityscape Length of Day: 26 hours Length of Year: 381 local days Sapient Species: Humans Starport: Stellar Population: 6 Billion Planet Function: Trade, Military Base Government: Democracy Tech Level: Space Major Exports: High Technology, Medical Supplies Major Imports: Food, Starship Technology, Swoop Bikes Description: Taris was once a galactic hub, being situated on the intersection of important hyperspace trade routes. However, prior to the Jedi Civil War several new, shorter routes were discovered, rendering Taris unnecessary. The planet began to decay, but still remained quite important in galactic life. It is believed the swoop bikes first originated on Taris, where swoop racing captured the imagination of the galaxy circa 4,000 BBY. Using an intricate system of hyperspace beacons, Taris race organizers would broadcast the results of the swoop races throughout the galaxy which eventually gave rise to a huge and profitable gambling operation. Taris remained a hub for swoop racing for decades, despite opposition from the Hutts and other criminal organizations. The city of Taris was usually divided into three levels: the Upper City, the Lower City and the Undercity. The Upper City was a beautiful area inhabited by rich people. Access to the Upper City was restricted to humans, although notable non-humans found in the Upper City included a Twi'lek droid merchant Janice Nall, Ajuur the Hutt and a Rodian duelist Twitch. The Upper City featured a cantina, which was famous for its dueling ring owned by Ajuur the Hutt, and Zelka Forn's medical facility, which was famous for being able to heal all diseases but the infamous rakghoul disease. -

Perhaps the oldest known use of mercenaries dates to the New Kingdom of ancient Egypt (1550-1069 BCE). New Kingdom Egypt was a powerful military empire that had conquered large parts of Syria, all of Palestine, and most of Nubia (today northern Sudan). Egyptian pharaohs of this period were truly -
