NOVEMBER 2015 Dr. Jeff Holmes, Superintendent
We all know that living in central Illinois the weather can change quickly. It is for this reason that parents, guardians, and babysitters pay close attention to weather forecasts, especially as we embark on the winter months. As the superintendent of schools it is important for me to plan with area superintendents and road commissioners so as to allow for decisions to be made regarding the need to let out of school or to cancel school altogether.
As we head into the winter months, it is important for parents to discuss with their children the procedures to be used when school is to be let out early because of inclement weather. As parents, you need to be aware if the weather looks as if it could get bad. The school district will attempt to allow 2 hours notice prior to letting students out in the case of bad weather. Parents need to tune their radios to WHOW (1520 -AM) WHOW (95.9 –FM) Clinton, WDWS (1400 – AM), “Forgiveness is a funny WJBC (1230 -AM) Bloomington, WSOY (1340 – AM), WSOY (103 -FM) Decatur. thing, it warms the heart and cools the sting” Parents can also tune to WAND, Decatur or WCIA, Champaign. The school district will call all parents whose name we have in our School Messenger -Peter Allen System, when dismissing early or cancelling school due to inclement weather. It is imperative that you have given the school your most recent phone number(s) if you would like to receive a phone call.
If school is going to be cancelled because of weather, the decision will be made by 6:45 a.m. on the morning in question. The School Messenger system will be utilized in addition to the radio and television. The absence of an announcement means that school is in session. Dates to Remember
The safety of our students in getting to and from school is the factor that will Nov 11 - No School Veterans Day determine if we will be in attendance or getting out early. The district needs Nov 25, 26, 27 - No School parental assistance especially on days when school is being let out early. Nov 4, 18 - 2:18 dismissals Make sure your child knows what to do if we are getting out of school early. Planning is the key to keeping our students safe. It is also imperative that your child have the proper clothing to keep warm while riding district transportation during the winter months.

Anxiety is becoming a common issue among school -aged children and it can stem from a variety of genetic and environmental factors. Teachers and parents can mistake anxiety for misbehavior. There are many ways parents and caretakers can alleviate a child’s anxiety. The more you know, the better you can help your child. Be aware of your child’s different moods and feelings. When your child becomes anxious, talk to him or her in a calming voice. Realize that it is very difficult for a child to control his/her anxiety. Praise the child when he or she handles anxiety appropriately. Don’t punish the child for anxious behavior. Try to maintain a consistent routine. Let the child know if something out of the ordinary will occur in his or her day. Know what upsets your child. Limit your child’s exposure to violent or scary books, video games, and movies. Talk to your child’s teachers to help them understand your child’s condition and explain ways they can help your child during the day. Listen to your child. It can be comforting to a child to know that they can talk to you about their feelings without judgment. Offer distractions. When you feel that your child is becoming anxious, try to get them involved in an activity they enjoy. Encourage your child to be active. Exercise releases mood -boosting endorphins. Make sure your child has quiet downtime (without electronics) to decompress.
NHS Update Our National Honor Society will be hosting a National Day of Giving event in cooperation with Eastern Illinois Food Bank. This will be a week -long event with a canned food drive and penny wars among grades K -12 to raise money for those in need within our surrounding communities. The Holidays are coming up and what better time to give back to others who find this time of year to be very difficult. Information will be sent home with your students in early November. I would like to start by saying thank you to all the students who brought back their 3M permission slips over the past few weeks. This is a great resource for our school and I’m so excited to see so many of you taking advantage of the e-book program. Below is a copy of the 3M permission slip for students who are still interested in joining the program. You can join 3M at any time during the school year. Each week when classes visit the library they are read aloud from either a short story or novel. The short stories are finished during one reading while the novels are split into sections and spread out over a longer period of time.
