This week, while prepping a Bible study, I noticed a miracle in John 6 that I’d never seen before. Jesus, after feeding the 5000 (I had noticed that miracle!), sends them across the Sea of Galilee in the boat (Mark 6:45) while he remains behind to pray. Evidently they spend over 6 hours trying to make the journey, but due to poor weather conditions, they’re only little more than half way across (3 or 4 miles).

Note that in undertaking this journey, they were doing the expressed will of Jesus, and Mark 6:48 says that Jesus even watched the disciples as they rowed across the lake. Think about that - they were doing the will of Jesus under the watch of Jesus, yet the rowing is arduous and pretty fruitless.

There is a second miracle, but that’s not the one that was new to me either… Jesus comes walking on the water. That one’s pretty explicit in the text too. But Mark adds the amazing detail that Jesus ‘meant to pass by them’. Isn’t that astounding and encouraging, their desperate need brought Jesus into their boat… Are you struggling in some area of your life, or in your Christian walk? Desperate need moves the heart of God! Your cry for help stops Him from passing by, and you get blessed by His presence in your boat - wow!!

But it’s verse 21 of John 6 that was revelatory for me this week. “Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.”

The first thing we notice is that it begins with a willingness to receive Jesus into the situation. Different translations say “willing”, “eager”, “glad”- you get the picture - the disciples were scared when they thought it was a ghost coming across the water, but delighted to see that the miraculous, lunch-multiplying Jesus was available to step into their desperate boat!

In times of need, do you welcome Jesus into your boat?

Secondly, and here’s the miracle I’d never noticed… as soon as Jesus gets in, they move from half- way across thanks to 6 hours rowing, to immediately arriving at their destination! I bet those disciples wished Jesus had arrived 3 or 4 hours earlier.

There’s a time that we have to dig in and row, when we’re following after a command of Jesus, or a promise given to us by the Lord. We might find ourselves like the disciples “straining at the rowing” - and this is ok. As Dallas Willard said “Grace is opposed to earning, it is not opposed to effort!” We thank God that we get to serve him in this way, we row faithfully but we thank God even more that often when we feel as if we’re never going to get there, He arrives in His power and we sometimes see immediate breakthrough.

Are you desperate to see something happen for the Lord in your church or locality, or for someone to come to know Him, or for someone to be healed? Keep rowing, keep trusting, and keep believing that in His will, He might suddenly enter the boat and immediately bring about the miraculous!

A pleasure to row this boat alongside you, for the glory of our Captain.

Simon YOUTH WORKER REFLECTION

Men and women search high and low in an adventure to find their purpose In life. Some spend an earthly fortune travelling, others advocate not travelling at all and suggest an inner search, meditation, an extreme introspection.

However, all one needs to do is sit and read what God has to say. After all, he created us. Surely he would be able to supply that answer.

Listening to the scriptures saves a lot of money, a lot of time too. They do not hide man’s purpose, they don’t obscure it, they surely don’t dismiss it. Your neighbour, your father, your mother, your co-worker, your children were created to offer living, conscious, true, faith-filled, passionate, image-bearing worship unto the living God.

This is true for every human being who has lived and will ever live. He gives us breathe, so we might give him glory.

Myself and other leaders get to be part of programmes, small groups, mentoring and evangelistic conversations throughout the week where we get a chance to present this truth to young people.

Would you please let me know if you’d love to be part of this journey, no matter what age, Jesus will use you. If you only have time to pray, please let me know too, I’d love to send you weekly prayer points.

Psalm 5:1-3:

Listen to my words, Lord, consider my lament.

Hear my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray.

In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.

In Christ,

Richard (07576 556 951) ANGELS AMONG US – THANK YOU

The organising committee of ANGELS AMONG US sincerely thanks all those in our church family who embraced the vision of our festival, prayed for it and made it a reality.

Thank you to everyone who pledged their time, talents and energy in support of this creative outreach event.

Above all, thank you for opening your hearts to welcome more than 5,000 visitors to our church, during the course of 10 days.

The opportunity to share the gospel in a visually unique way was deeply humbling. Many visitors to the exhibition spoke of their profound emotion as they were reminded of God’s powerful and intentional desire to meet, reveal himself and to engage personally with us!

Our vision is to increase accessibility to the Christian faith and generate new ways of sharing that faith. ANGELS AMONG US is primarily a form of ‘Faith Art’, which seeks to inform us further, about God, His character and His attributes, so we are committed to sharing and growing this creative ministry with other churches across Ireland. At present we are considering many requests from other churches to host the exhibition.

Many however, in our church family, want to exhibit ANGELS AMONG US one last time in our parish, before it goes on tour. So, after much prayerful consideration, the exhibition will reopen in June 2020 and we are excited about this additional opportunity for mission.

We pray that you will want to join us again this summer, in blessing others, through your engagement with ANGELS AMONG US – SUMMER CELEBRATION. It is our intention to open the exhibition from Thursday 28th May-Sunday 7th June, after which this creative resource will commence its tour to other venues. Please prayerfully consider your practical support for this creative ministry.

Finally; while a full financial statement is not yet complete, (with gift aid still to be added) we anticipate a net balance of approximately £30,000 raised through donations. This is an amazing total and we are grateful to God for His favour and blessing.

Remember the words of Paul to the Colossians; And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17

1st MARALIN BOYS’ BRIGADE

And we are back! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. We hit the ground running in January as we picked up where we left off with our scripture programmes. A big thank you to all the visitors who came in and helped to deliver specific sections of the various programmes last year.

The Junior Section scripture session will culminate with the Battalion Scripture Competition in mid February, the Company Section scripture runs on until March where again the programme finishes with an exam.

On Saturday 9th January we hosted our annual prayer breakfast which was attended by officers from other companies within the Battalion, as always the prayer time, the food and the fellowship were amazing, we are already looking forwards to the next in Moira in February.

February is a very busy month for us in terms of badgework programmes, we will be hosting the Company Section Grade 3 Leadership training which is run over two nights, boys who are working towards their President’s badge from across the Battalion will converge on Dollingstown for what are fun filled training sessions.

The end of February kicks off the first of our annual fund raisers for 2020, it’s our Big Bacon Butty Breakfast on Saturday 29th February at 9am in Magheralin, this is always a popular event and brings in essential funds for BB which in turn allows us to run our various programmes for the boys throughout the year and to subsidise the various outings for each of the Sections. We pray that this year the church and wider community support will be as strong as ever and we will be as successful as we have been in previous years.

Discussions and plans are already underway for the annual display night which this year is on Friday 24th April 2020, I will go into more detail about this over the coming months. God Bless.

Seniors’ Community

St Saviour’s, Dollingstown February Magheralin Church Hall th th th th th 4 ,11 , 18 & 25 Wednesday 26 February Everyone Welcome Everyone Welcome

We are glad to be up & running after the Christmas & New Year break & January 2020 will soon be a distant memory.

During January we completed our series on the Life of Christ finishing with Jesus the Risen Lord.

Each year we have a missionary story, this year was about the life of Jim Elliott who even from a young age wanted to travel and do God’s work. His story was split into 2 lessons. He was born 8th October 1927, in Portland, Oregon, he was very gifted in sports & public speaking. His acting ability led some of the teachers in the school to suggest that he pursue acting as a career and his oratorical skills were similarly lauded after preparing and delivering a speech in honour of President Franklin D Roosevelt’s death but felt God was calling him to teach the Quechua people in Ecuador, South America. Along with his friend Peter Fleming they arrived in Ecuador in February 1952 they stayed in Quito before moving into the jungle. A year later he married his university sweetheart Elisabeth (Betty) Howard who now was also a missionary they had a daughter Valerie in February 1955. Jim, Peter & 3 friends Ed, Roger and their pilot Nate flew over the jungle using a loudspeaker to make contact with the Hauorani Indians an indigenous people violent & considered dangerous to outsiders. Unfortunately all were killed by these Indians. Jim Elliott died 8th January 1956 aged 28. After his death Elisabeth and other missionaries continued to work with the Hauorani and carry on Jim’s legacy. The children are always interested in this type of lesson & are able to ask questions which help them in their walk with Jesus.

Through the second part of February we will be looking at the Gospel message & God who is our Rock, Saviour & our fortress.

Diary date: Monday 17th February- NO GNC (mid term break)

The GNC Leaders

Firstly a MASSIVE THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to either our CAP Hamper Appeal or our CAP Present Appeal this year. With your generosity we were able to provide gifts, Hampers & Fruit baskets to 30 families known to both our Lurgan Debt Centre & also the families who were previously attached to the Mid Armagh debt centre.

It was my privilege to be able to deliver these to families on your behalf in the week prior to Christmas & it was such an encouragement to see how much these gifts were appreciated by each family & also how we were welcomed into homes as we delivered these.

The New Year brings with it good news.. after taking “Time to Breathe” at Head Office, in order to get fully caught up with dealing with the complexities of current client cases, the New Enquiries telephone lines at CAP Bradford reopened on 20th January 2020 & so we are now ready & waiting to accept referrals to the local centre once again. Should anyone wish to use CAP’s service, or know of someone who might benefit from working with CAP, the number to call initially is 0800 328 0006, where the new enquiries team will be able to book the client into the next available appointment with their local centre. I am always available to discuss CAP’s services with anyone who might like to learn more, so please just stop me in church or give me a call anytime, if I can provide any more information at all as to the services CAP can provide. Also, we are always keen to engage with those who might consider volunteering in the role of a befriender. If you think this could be you, or you would like to know more as to what this role involves, please do also get in touch. CAP works at its very best when clients establish a strong bond with their befriender, who in essence stands alongside the clients to provide prayer, support & encouragement during their journey to become debt free. Your continued prayers that anyone in need will not struggle with debt in isolation, but seek CAP’s help & service are as always much appreciated.

Finally an appeal… it is planned to have a CAP Tandem Bike Relay take place between every CAP Service in commencing the weekend of 24th April 2020. Every CAP Service is being asked to provide volunteers to man the bike from their Centre to the next & it is hoped we will raise funds for each service in doing so. Cycling is most definitely not a talent of mine (I would only feel comfortable on a trike!!), so I am hoping some of our church family might take up the baton for CAP Lurgan. This could be 2 people, a cavalcade of cyclists from the Lurgan area.. just whatever we want it to be locally. Routes are still being finalised, but if you feel you could help our Centre in this way, please do have a word with me.

God bless, Ruth (07711 828 965)

Once again we would like to say a "big thank you" to those parishioners who filled a shoebox before Christmas. We hope that it gave you much pleasure but also the satisfaction to know that each shoebox will have brought much joy and happiness to those young people who are in difficult situations across our world.

The shoeboxes from Northern Ireland were being sent to the Middle East, just over 5,000. 66 boxes were collected from Magheralin and Dollingstown. The number in the U.K came to just under 400,000. Worldwide 10.5 Million shoeboxes were collected and distributed.

Let us continue to remember the work of Samaritan’s Purse in our prayers as they seek to help and give practical support to those areas in our world affected by natural disasters in the name of Christ.

SUNDAY MORNING SUNDAY EVENING TEACHING TEACHING

LENT – A GOOD TIME TO DEEPEN YOUR PRAYER LIFE

Lent is a time to take stock of ourselves spiritually. This includes setting aside extra time for prayer. Here are some helpful things to remember as you settle down to it: People have been praying since Adam had a grandson named Enosh. The Bible tells us (Genesis 4:26) that it was during his days when ‘men began to call on the name of the Lord’. They have been doing it ever since.

People have had their prayers answered by God since Genesis, too. But if you want to read some beautiful prayers – and answers to them, browse through the Psalms. Again and again the psalmist writes: “the Lord heard my cry”.

So – what do you need to bring to prayer? Just the tiniest amount of faith that God is even there…. Jesus assures us that even faith as big as a tiny mustard seed will be effective.

What gives you the right to come before Almighty God? Jesus does. The Bible is clear that “there is one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ”. (1 Timothy 2:5)

The Bible makes clear that God does not stand on ceremony – in fact, He prefers our personal, spontaneous prayers. Jesus was very matter of fact about it: “When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” (Matthew 6:6)

The Bible assures us that prayer will bring us good things: “we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need”. (Hebrews 4:16)

Above all, prayer must be made with a pure heart. “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” (Psalm 66:18) That simply means that if you know you are doing something wrong, and intend to keep right on doing it, don’t waste your time praying.

Finally, what can be the results of your prayers this Lent? Well, here are seven, for starters….

1. Joy and deep happiness. (John 16:24)

2. Relief from your worry, stress and tension (Philippians 4:6,7)

3. Wisdom and more mental clarity (James 1:5,6)

4. Protection and deliverance from temptations (Matthew 26:41)

5. An ability to share the Good News of Jesus to other people (Matthew 9:38)

6. Strength to persevere when you feel under spiritual attack (Ephesians 6:18)

7. A growing thankfulness to God, who is worthy of all glory (Revelation 4:11)

CHILDREN’S WORDSEARCH

LOVE IN ACTION!

The writer Gary Chapman describes the 5 ‘love languages’ as words of encouragement, quality time, gifts, acts of service and touch. Do you have a preferred ‘language of love’?

With the approach of St Valentine’s Day, let’s ask: what is God’s love language? ‘Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.’ (1 John 3:18). God’s love is expressed in the word agape, which is exclusively found in the New Testament. Greek has a number of words for love e.g. empathetic, friendship, but agape is defined uniquely by Jesus. ‘This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.’ (1 John 3:16) It provides the model for how we should love others.

Agape love is self-giving: it is ready to put the other person first, just as Jesus gave His life for us on the cross by dying in our place. Are we generous with our time, words, money and service to others?

Agape love takes the initiative: are we ready to show love to those who don’t deserve it? Do we have eyes of compassion to see the needs around us and a heart to reach out to them?

Agape love is intentional: are we ready to get close to those in need around us, irrespective of what time we have or how we feel?

The story is told of Jesus asking a little child, ‘how much do you love me?’ The child replied ‘lots and lots and lots!’ They then asked Jesus how much He loved them. Jesus stretched out His arms wide and said ‘I love you this much’, as they nailed Him to a cross.

LOVE NEVER FAILS

Love is patient, Love is kind Through Jesus Christ, love you will find. Love does not envy, It is not puffed up Seek Him with your heart, He will fill your cup.

Love does not behave rudely, does not seek its own Be kind to others, for this God has shown. Love bears, believes, hopes and endures all things, Give love to all and blessings God brings.

Love Never Fails.
