Interview: Rich Mangicaro - Photos: Rob Shanahan 015 Parents have a powerful and positive impact upon the development and health of their children. The relationship between father and son early on in life is crucial—dad is his son’s first role model. He is both consciously and subconsciously observed, and his words and actions are absorbed, even before the child’s first spoken word. With an artistic parent, a child can be influenced even while still in the womb; rhythms and melodies permeate mama’s belly and the child is most definitely affected by this. Some say it’s the beginning of ‘natural talent’ or ‘being born with it.’ Some say the child is an old soul. To have one child that is born with this natural artistic talent is quite something to behold, but to have four?! This is extraordinary. Thus is the case with the Wackerman family. Hailing from Orange County, California, this gifted musical family has inspired thousands of musicians worldwide. All four of Chuck and Barbara Wackerman’s sons are absolute virtuosos on their instrument. Three of their sons, Chad, John and Brooks became drummers like their dad. Equally as talented as his drumming brothers, Bob Wackerman chose the drummer’s right-hand instrument, the bass.

  • Jazz Rock Fusion Surviving Four Decades and Counting…
1 of 38 Jazz Rock Fusion Surviving Four Decades and Counting… By, Rick Calic www.jazzrockworld.com March 2006 Writing an article about Jazz Rock Fusion these days might seem as pointless as debating the benefits of Hi-Fi equipment with vacuum tubes vs. transistors to someone that uses an iPod. The only people that would care are older folks who even remember tubes and dedicated enthusiasts. On the other hand, while Jazz Rock Fusion might be older or seem equally pointless to many reading this article, there remains a large but scattered segment of the world’s population that sees the genre as a vibrant and legitimate art form. Sadly though, the musical perspective regarding Jazz Rock Fusion was narrow from the beginning and will probably always be that way. Jazz Rock Fusion, in terms of the entire world of music, constitutes just a tiny fraction of interest. Yet, if we accept this as fact, which most fans, musicians and certainly “big business” does, the generation of any interest at all is meritorious. In order to discuss the music with integrity, a ground rule needs to be established. This ground rule is required due to the unsolved, long lasting, and ongoing mysteries of the music and its unique identity. Mysteries such as: What is Jazz Rock Fusion? Who started Jazz Rock Fusion? What should it be called? And finally, with no major media support why is there still a market? So, what are the answers you ask? Quite simply these mysteries will remain mysteries. Answering the questions definitively will end up as trivial as the facts regarding the creation and development of the gut bucket.

October 2011 | No. 114 Your FREE Guide to the NYC Jazz Scene nycjazzrecord.com George Benson Return of the Guitar Man ARE U SPECIASL GUIIST Vic Juris • Mary Halvorson • Loose Torque • Event Calendar When one thinks of the instrument that most closely defines jazz, the saxophone is the obvious choice. But guitar has been making a strong case for decades now and some of the most compelling players in jazz history have been six-stringers. New York@Night What makes the guitarist most interesting is that they often have the most 4 expansive view of jazz and its possibilities, saddled with less history and fewer Interview: Vic Juris archetypes. We feature three of them in this, our special Guitar Issue. George Benson (On The Cover) has been a polarizing figure, heir to the throne of Wes 6 by Ryan Blotnick Montgomery but willing to disappoint purists because of his crossover activities; Artist Feature: Mary Halvorson Benson plays Town Hall this month in support of his new (return-to-jazz) album Guitar Man. Vic Juris (Interview) got his start, like many of his kind, working with by Martin Longley 7 organists, but also absorbed the nascent fusion movement, establishing his On The Cover: George Benson credentials with Dave Liebman and as a leader and educator; Juris plays around by Bill Milkowski town several times this month. And Mary Halvorson (Artist Feature) has rightly 9 been described as a unique voice on her instrument, to which her various projects Encore: Lest We Forget: and appearances as a sideman attest; this month she plays with mentor Anthony 10 Braxton as well as leading or co-leading several typically wide-ranging projects.

  • Psaudio Copper
Issue 109 APRIL 20TH, 2020 This issue’s cover: Judy Garland (1922 – 1969). One of the most iconic actresses, recording artists and performers of all time. Though haunted by personal struggles, she attained greatness that few ever achieved. Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue. Like everyone else, we at Copper have been impacted by the coronavirus, whether by disruption in our work and home lives to financial impact, stress, anxiety and writer’s block. And yes, one of us contracted the virus – thankfully, he’s doing OK. So, over the next few issues you might see some changes – temporary absence of some writers, a different balance of articles and other differences from the usual. We trust you’ll understand, and we look forward to when these pages, and our lives, reach a new equilibrium. It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Stereophile deputy editor Art Dudley. He was one of the finest men ever to grace the audio industry. My tribute to him is in these pages. Also in this issue: Rich Isaacs begins a series on Italian progressive rock with a look at the great PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi). Ken Sander takes us on a wild rock and roll ride with Eric Burdon and War. Professor Larry Schenbeck continues his series on immersive sound. WL Woodward gets jazzed about bass. John Seetoo concludes his series on legendary Yellow Magic Orchestra/film composer/techno-pop pioneer Ryuichi Sakamoto. In a special report we ask audio companies how they’re responding to the COVID-19 crisis.
